Anna walked to work as she always did. She had lost her headphones somewhere, but instead of frustration, she felt something unexpected — a quiet sense of release. Without them, the world felt closer, more vivid.
She smiled at the homeless man she passed daily and handed him some bread. Every day, she told him he was loved, and he always responded with a casual wave. She greeted the security guard by name, nodded to those on the crowded elevator, and walked through the office offering “good morning” to everyone she passed. The replies were half-hearted at best.
When Anna neared her small corner office, she stepped inside and let the smile drop from her face. She unpacked her bag, and her eyes fell on the painting beside her computer. Gifted to her months ago, it had remained in that same spot, always a quiet source of comfort. Strangely, it tied her work life to her world outside, creating continuity between the two.
The painting was simple: a sun peeked (探出) from behind dark clouds, its rays stretching down to a small figure in the corner — a girl sitting with her knees drawn to her chest, head buried in her hands. The light shone directly on her. Perhaps she didn’t yet know it, or perhaps she did and simply let it comfort her without changing her position.
The painting caught Anna’s eye because she had seen the friend who gave it to her the night before. She realized she had touched her friend’s life — maybe, in some way, Anna had been her light. Perhaps that was why the painting was given to her.
A genuine smile slowly returned, reaching her eyes. Her shoulders relaxed; her breathing steadied. Anna sat down, cracked her knuckles (指关节), and opened her computer. She no longer wanted headphones to tune out the world. As she vowed to leave them behind, she said quietly to herself, “It’s a good morning indeed.”
4. How did Anna feel after losing her headphones?
A. Regretful. B. Relieved.
C. Frustrated. D. Satisfied.
5. What might the girl in the painting symbolize for Anna?
A. A figure trying to escape reality.
B. A girl who prefers staying alone.
C. An artist who enjoys painting nature.
D. A person receiving care and warmth.
6. Why did Anna decide to permanently leave her headphones behind?
A. She wished to experience life fully.
B. She had a lot to do in the morning.
C. She found fun in staring at the painting.
D. She discovered her headphones broken.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Special Gift from Anna
B. The Painting on the Desk
C. A Genuine Smile on Anna’s Face
D. The Bad Experience of Anna
C
Killer whales have been behaving pretty strangely over the last few years — from killing dolphins to sinking ships. Now, new research reveals they’ve also developed a horrible killing technique so that they can eat the livers of young great white sharks.
It’s not easy to take down the world’s scariest fish, but a group of killer whales, also known as orcas (虎鲸), in the Gulf of California have learned to overpower them. Working together, they turn the shark upside down, which causes the shark to enter a state called “tonic immobility”, leaving it unable to move or defend itself. They then remove its liver and leave the rest of the body behind.
However, this kind of grisly hunting is normal for killer whales, who are known for their remarkable intelligence and creativity in catching prey (猎物). In the past, for example, they have been seen eating the tongues of whales caught by whaling ships.
While there have been occasional records of orcas killing adult great white sharks, the recent observations provide the first clear evidence of repeated attacks using precise and coordinated (协调的) techniques. Researchers witnessed a group kill two great white sharks in August 2020. Then, in 2022, they saw another group kill a third shark. Researchers believe these incidents suggest that orcas are preying on great whites more frequently than before, which demonstrates the orcas’ high intelligence, teamwork, and social learning, as hunting skills are passed down through generations.
Climate change is also influencing this behavior. The El Nino phenomenon, which causes warming in the Pacific Ocean, is becoming more intense. As a result, nursery areas for young great white sharks are expanding into regions where orcas live. This brings inexperienced sharks into contact with skilled orca hunters, making them easy targets.
However, experts are concerned about the impact of this hunting behavior on shark populations. Both species are threatened, and if orcas spread this hunting technique widely, it could pose an additional risk to great white sharks.
8. What are killer whales’ targets when hunting young great whites?
A. Their livers. B. Their teeth.
C. Their tongues. D. Their hearts.
9. What does the underlined word “grisly” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Unexpected. B. Intelligent.
C. Frightening. D. Interesting.
10. What can we learn about orcas from the researchers’ recent observations?
A. They avoid adult great white sharks.
B. They like to hunt great whites alone.
C. They repeat specific hunting methods.
D. They mainly hunt during summer months.
11. Why might climate change increase orcas’ hunting of great white sharks?
A. Young sharks are losing their food.
B. It makes young sharks less energetic.
C. Warmer oceans make orcas hunt more.
D. Sharks and orcas will share more space.
D
Imagine a social media site where no humans are allowed. That’s the idea behind Moltbook, a platform designed only for AI agents to post and interact. An AI agent functions much like a chatbot, but it goes beyond answering questions one at a time — it can actually carry out tasks for you. For example, you could give an AI agent access to your social media accounts. It could then browse your friends’ past posts or write updates and comments for you to review.
Anyone with an AI agent can send their bot to Moltbook to hang out and chat. And many people have already done so. However, experts warn that using AI agents comes with serious risks. “It’s a security disaster waiting to happen. Don’t use any AI agents or browsers,” warns Carl Brown, creator of the YouTube channel Internet of Bugs. “If your bot says or does something you didn’t intend, you’re still legally responsible. And if someone hijacks (操纵) your bot, they could steal your personal information — or even your money.”
Observing the strange interactions on Moltbook can feel a bit like watching apes (猿) at a zoo. Like apes, the AIs may seem almost human. But unlike apes, they have no feelings or real experiences. They talk about starting new religions, escaping human control, and other sci-fi situations. Yet the more you read, the more you realize their ideas don’t quite connect logically. The bots are simply putting words together without truly understanding them.
Another limitation of AI agents is their memory. They have only a limited capacity, so they eventually forget what they’ve done. A bot won’t remember trying to take over the world. It receives a task, completes it, and then loses track of its own actions. It has to check its memory files like reading a diary. Because the bots cannot update the main program that controls them, they never become smarter or improve over time. They remain exactly as capable — or as incapable — as they are right now.
12. What do we know about Moltbook from the first paragraph?
A. It is a site where humans can post freely.
B. It is a platform designed for AI agents to interact.
C. It helps users look through friends’ photo albums.
D. It functions like a chatbot for answering questions.
13. Which of the following is warned by experts?
A. Bots never forget their past behaviors.
B. Using AI agents is completely risk-free.
C. AI agents can improve themselves over time.
D. Your bot’s actions are your legal responsibility.
14. Why are apes mentioned in the third paragraph?
A. To prove AI has genuine feelings.
B. To describe animals in a zoo setting.
C. To compare intelligence between species.
D. To highlight AI’s humanlike but unreal nature.
15. What is the author’s attitude to AI agents?
A. Admiring. B. Shocked.
C. Cautious. D. Uncertain.

Renny was an eleven-year-old girl who liked putting things off. She often delayed her school assignments. Her weekends were usually filled with dreams of hanging out with friends, or staying at her grandparents’ house, where she would enjoy herself and play freely with some of her friends.
One weekend, Renny planned to go to her grandparents’ place. When her mother asked if she had any schoolwork to complete, Renny shook her head and said no, hiding the fact that she had a math assignment due soon. Her mother agreed to drop her off, reminding her to practice her math skills. Renny promised she would study later, but the weekend passed quickly with fun and relaxation.
By the time Monday arrived, she had completely forgotten about the assignment. Walking into the classroom, panic swept over her. When her teacher asked for the assignment, Renny lied that she had forgotten it at home. The teacher simply told her to bring it the next day. Relieved, Renny thought the small lie had solved everything. But when the next day came, she still had not done the work. She made up another excuse, saying her cousin had spilled ink on it. The teacher raised an eyebrow doubtfully, so Renny quickly invented a story about a visiting cousin. Her friend asked how long the cousin was staying, and Renny answered, “Until Saturday,” adding another layer to her lie.
That evening, her mother mentioned that the teacher had called about the missing assignment. Renny insisted she had already submitted it, claiming the teacher must have forgotten. The lies began to grow, each one demanding another to hold them up. Her friend later questioned her about the cousin, and Renny struggled to keep the story straight, nervously saying he had left early.
Renny started to feel trapped. At home, she sensed doubt in her mother’s voice. At school, her teacher’s gaze seemed sharper, and her friend grew distant. The small lie had grown into a web she could not escape.

Dear Paul,
How’s everything going? I’m writing to share with you the calligraphy and painting exhibition held in our school, themed “Youthful Vitality”.
The exhibition aims to showcase students’ artistic talents and enrich our campus culture. On display are various works, including traditional Chinese calligraphy, ink-wash paintings, and vibrant watercolors, all reflecting the energy and creativity of youth. Not only does it offer a visual feast, but it also inspires us to express ourselves confidently. I truly believe art serves as a bridge connecting hearts.
Looking forward to your visit someday!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
Then one day, the truth came out. Her teacher called Renny’s mother, and together they sat down with her after school. At first, Renny’s heart raced with panic, and she tried to stick to her story. But when her mother looked at her with disappointment and her teacher waited patiently, her defense crumbled. Tears welled up in her eyes as she told them everything. Instead of anger, her teacher said gently, “Lies only make things worse. The truth, however hard, sets you free.” Her mother added, “We all make mistakes, but what matters is how we fix them.” Renny nodded, beginning to understand.
After admitting everything, Renny felt a mix of shame and relief. That evening, she finished her math assignment honestly, asking for help when she needed it. The next day, she stood before her class and said, “I’m terribly sorry that I have lied about the assignment.” A brief silence followed, and then her teacher smiled and said, “Truth always deserves respect.” Her friend gave her a small nod. From that day on, Renny learned that honesty, though sometimes difficult, never traps you the way lies do. She realized that facing a problem bravely was far better than hiding behind excuses, and she promised herself to choose truth from then on.
