Diseases & Conditions — Tuberculosis
Overview
Tuberculosis, also called TB, is a serious illness that mainly affects the lungs. The germs that cause tuberculosis are a type of bacteria.
Tuberculosis can spread when a person with the illness coughs, sneezes or sings. This can put tiny droplets with the germs into the air. Another person can then breathe in the droplets, and the germs enter the lungs.
Tuberculosis spreads easily where people gather in crowds or where people live in crowded conditions. People with HIV/AIDS and other people with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of catching tuberculosis than people with typical immune systems.
Symptoms
When TB germs survive and multiply in the lungs, it is called a TB infection. Symptoms of active TB disease in the lungs usually begin gradually and worsen over a few weeks. They may include:
Cough.
Coughing up blood or mucus.
Chest pain.
Pain with breathing.
Fever.
Chills.
Night sweats.
Weight loss.
Not wanting to eat.
Tiredness.
Not feeling well in general.
When to see a doctor
The symptoms of tuberculosis are similar to symptoms of many different illnesses. See your healthcare professional if you have symptoms that don’t improve with a few days of rest.
Get emergency room if you have:
Chest pain.
Sudden, severe headache.
Confusion.
Difficulty breathing.
Get urgent care if you:
Cough up blood.
Have blood in your urine or stool.

Rohan Mehta was given the Young Achiever award by Kensington and Chelsea Council and recognised with a civic honour by Hammersmith and Fulham Council for his work in helping rough sleepers in London.
Two years ago, the 17-year-old student at Latymer Upper School, who was then preparing for his A Level exams, launched a voluntary initiative called “In The Bag”. He handed out free hygiene kits to the homeless using leftover airline toiletry bags. These life-changing kits are stuffed with essentials such as soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.
Rohan approached several homeless shelters, organizations and charities in his local area and asked them what they needed. The humongous response was for basic toiletries. He said: “It’s very hard for rough sleepers to get their hands on basic toiletries and that’s where the idea started.” He also included pens, socks and ear plugs. The teen said: “I wanted to focus on something with daily hygiene. When you’re homeless, you don’t have access to a lot of these things and when you’re able to stay in a shelter overnight, for example, if you’re able to clean yourself up properly, it makes you feel a lot better.”
His efforts have been recognised by two London councils. In March, he was handed the Young Achiever’s Award by the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea. In April, he was given a civic honour by Hammersmith and Fulham Council for his contributions to building a stronger, safer, kinder borough.
Rohan’s mother Sonal said it was incredibly special seeing her son receive two awards in such a short period. She said: “As a parent, you always want your kid to be kind and thoughtful, and to see that actually recognised with two awards felt very special for me because he’s genuinely worked so hard to make a difference in people’s lives and it’s moving to see how committed he is to helping others.”
4. What did Rohan Mehta use to make the free hygiene kits for the homeless?
A. Newly bought toiletries from stores.
B. Extra toiletry bags from the airlines.
C. Donations from homeless shelters.
D. Products from his own household.
5. The underlined word “humongous” in the passage is closest in meaning to ______.
A. surprising B. confusing C. overwhelming D. compulsive
6. The main reason Rohan included other things in the hygiene kits is that ______.
A. he thought these items were more significant than toiletries
B. he wanted to make the kits look more attractive to the homeless
C. he realized that these items may also improve the homeless’ life
D. he was asked to include these items by the homeless shelters
7. From his mother’s words, we can infer that ______.
A. Sonal is very proud of Rohan’s kindness, efforts to helping the homeless
B. Sonal thinks actual efforts in helping are more important than the awards
C. Sonal expected Rohan to win some awards before he started the work
D. Sonal believes the awards are the main reason Rohan’s work is meaningful
B 5. C 6. C 7. A

When you’re homeless, you don’t have access to a lot of these things and when you’re able to stay in a shelter overnight, for example, if you’re able to clean yourself up properly, it makes you feel a lot better.

Thanks to faulty artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and plain bad actors, children encounter a significant amount of false information online.
Aliens live on Neptune (海王星). Ancient pyramids generated electricity. Humans don’t cause climate change. You might assume these claims are believed only by conspiracy theorists, but they could just as easily be endorsed by a curious nine-year-old with an iPad. YouTube frequently recommends AI-generated videos containing such questionable claims to children, often disguised as educational content. While children’s exposure to misleading information online isn’t new, AI has worsened the problem by enabling the fast production of problematic content that moderators struggle to control.
Even children who spend limited time online are likely to encounter false or inaccurate information that could mislead them.Interacting directly with AI can be equally risky. Tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google’s Gemini often make errors and invent sources — a fact even Google’s CEO acknowledges. Estimates suggest over half of AI-generated responses contain factual inaccuracies.
Despite this, developers design AI chatbots to sound confident and authoritative, even when they’re wrong. This creates a dangerous situation for children, who may trust conversational, natural-sounding content more readily.
Yet, children are already using these technologies, and their usage isn’t slowing down. As digital natives, they often spend more time on devices than parents realize — by more than an hour per day, according to some studies. Children are generally more familiar with new platforms like AI chatbots than their parents and may turn to them for sensitive questions they’re afraid to ask adults. Research by my colleagues and me shows that children need adults to actively teach them how to distinguish fact from fiction, even if their screen time seems brief and harmless.
8. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Children are the primary victims of deepfakes.
B. AI-generated videos are often entertaining for children.
C. YouTube is recommending false claims to children.
D. Children are exposed to false information due to AI.
9. Why is AI-generated content particularly dangerous for children?
A. Because it is always disguised as educational content.
B. Because it can be produced rapidly and is hard to ease.
C. Because children are more likely to spend time on AI platforms.
D. Because AI tools always make factual education errors.
10. What does the author imply about AI chatbots in the passage?
A. They are designed to be intentionally misleading.
B. They are less reliable than human teachers.
C. They are only used by children for entertainment.
D Their tone makes them more trustworthy.
11. What does the research mentioned in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Parents should limit their children’s screen time strictly.
B. Children are naturally good at distinguishing fact from fiction.
C. Adults need to play an role in teaching children media literacy.
D. AI chatbots should be banned for children under a certain age.
D 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第二段“While children’s exposure to misleading information online isn’t new, AI has worsened the problem by enabling the fast production of problematic content that moderators struggle to control. (虽然儿童在网上接触误导性信息并不是什么新鲜事,但人工智能使问题内容的快速生产变得更加严重,审查员难以控制。)”可知,AI能快速生成有问题的内容且管理员难以管控,这使得AI生成的内容对孩子特别危险。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Despite this, developers design AI chatbots to sound confident and authoritative, even when they’re wrong. This creates a dangerous situation for children, who may trust conversational, natural-sounding content more readily. (尽管如此,开发人员将人工智能聊天机器人设计得自信而权威,即使它们是错的。这给孩子们造成了危险的局面,他们可能更容易相信对话式的、听起来自然的内容。)”可推断,AI聊天机器人的语气让它们听起来自信权威,使孩子更容易信任,即使它们是错的。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Children are generally more familiar with new platforms like AI chatbots than their parents and may turn to them for sensitive questions they’re afraid to ask adults. Research by my colleagues and me shows that children need adults to actively teach them how to distinguish fact from fiction, even if their screen time seems brief and harmless. (孩子们通常比他们的父母更熟悉人工智能聊天机器人等新平台,并且可能会向他们求助于他们不敢问成年人的敏感问题。我和我的同事们的研究表明,孩子们需要成年人积极地教他们如何区分事实和虚构,即使他们的屏幕时间似乎短暂而无害。)” 可知,研究表明孩子需要成年人积极教他们区分事实和虚构,也就是成年人要在教授孩子媒体素养方面发挥作用。故选C。
D
A toxic relationship is one that undermines your well-being — emotionally, psychologically, and sometimes even physically. These relationships can exist in various contexts, from friendships to romantic partnerships, and even within families. It is characterised by behaviours that leave you feeling unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or attacked. Basically, it is an interrelationship where the bad consistently outweighs the good, and your overall welfare is threatened.
Recognizing toxicity allows you to take steps to protect yourself and seek healthier connections. Physical or verbal abuse is a clear sign of toxicity, but psychological abuse is not as obvious. Alongside persistent criticism and attempts to isolate you from loved ones, constantly being blamed and made to feel guilty about your or somebody else’s actions are behaviours to watch out for. According to many, however, what makes toxicity apparent in a relationship are frequent situations of consistent disrespect, where you don’t feel appreciated or are even insulted.
Toxic relationships can have far-reaching consequences on the victim’s well-being on a mental and physical level. Living in these emotionally unhealthy conditions leads to a steady decrease in self-worth and self-esteem. Lacking energy after interactions and experiencing depression, anger, or tiredness are only some of the negative effects that such relationships can have on an individual. Physically, the stress and anxiety stemming from toxic dynamics can lead to a range of health issues, including digestive issues, weakened immune function, and sleep disturbances.
The list of toxic behaviours is long. One of these categories is ‘behavioural control’, which includes strategies employed by individuals to influence and dominate others to achieve personal gain. Another category of toxic behaviours is ‘emotional impact’, which is determined by how individuals experience and react to emotional signals, whether they be positive or negative. It refers to the effects of emotional experiences on thoughts, feelings, and behaviour, which can range from positive emotions like happiness to negative ones like sadness or fear. This category is relevant especially for those who deal with past traumas or insecurities. These individuals are considered vulnerable as they may struggle to set limits, express needs, or protect themselves from harm, making them more prone to exploitation by others. Identifying and dealing with your weaknesses is a good starting point to build up your ability to bounce back emotionally.
12. The writer describes a toxic relationship as _______?
A. a long-term relationship where the people involved feel unappreciated.
B. a connection which is constantly dominated by negative experiences.
C. a romantic bond in which each party feels threatened by the other.
D. a family that lacks support and understanding between members.
13. According to the writer, one of the most obvious signs of psychological abuse is _______?
A. a constant feeling of loneliness and isolation.
B. an intense fear of being physically harmed.
C. repeated occurrences that show lack of appreciation.
D. continuous accusations of being at fault in any situation.
14. Which mental effects of a toxic relationship does the writer mention?
A. The inability to have a good night’s sleep.
B. The gradual loss of confidence in oneself.
C. The lack of financial independence.
D. The need to avoid emotional connections..
15. What is the first thing you should do to develop emotional resilience?
A. Recognising and working on the areas that make you vulnerable.
B. Becoming more determined about getting what they need and want.
C. Identifying what behaviors cause unwanted or unhappy emotions.
D. Keeping yourself safe with the help of family and friends.
B 13. C 14. B 15. A

Matilda Browne (1869-1947) was a successful artist in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, few people know her name or her art today.
Matilda Browne showed promising artistic talent early in her life. Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, she got an introduction to art by watching her neighbor, painter Thomas Moran. Her parents supported their budding young artist. ___16___And it paid off. Matilda Browne participated in her first major exhibition when she was just twelve years old.
Browne loved to paint animals, especially cows and other animals. ___17___ Her bold brushwork gave her paintings a live appearance. Her style is best described as Impressionism.
Matilda Browne quickly became a respected and successful artist. Her list of honours opened doors that would have been otherwise inaccessible for a female artist of her time. As an adult, she moved to Connecticut, where she painted in Old Lyme. ___18___She even had the honor of painting a door of their workshop. Some sources say that her good sense of humor helped her fit in with the boys, while others claim that her seriousness is what won them over. ___19___
Browne was a successful artist throughout her life. She won numerous awards and exhibited in many important shows. However, very few people know about her today. This is a more common story for female artists than one might think. So, why has Browne faded into being unknown? ___20___She was American, while books about American Impressionists tend to focus on the male artists.
A. She was the only woman accepted into the male artists’ circle there.
B. It was her artistic style that hadn’t aroused people’s interest.
C. Her impressive skill brought her under everyone’s notice.
D. She also painted many flowers in colorful garden landscapes.

Her parents supported their budding young artist.(玛蒂尔达·布朗早年就表现出了很有前途的艺术才华。 Matilda Browne participated in her first major exhibition when she was just twelve years old.(这样做得到了回报。

根据后文“She even had the honor of painting a door of their workshop. Some sources say that her good sense of humor helped her fit in with the boys, while others claim that her seriousness is what won them over.(她甚至有幸为他们的工作间画了一扇门。有消息称,她的幽默感帮助她与男孩们打成一片,而另一些人则声称,她的认真是赢得男孩们好感的原因)”可知,后文提到她的幽默感帮助她与男孩们打成一片,说明她被男性艺术家圈子接纳了,故A选项“她是那里男性艺术家圈子里唯一被接纳的女性”符合语境,故选A。

I come from a family of hard workers. My grandparents were not overly educated but they were successful and smart. My parents are very well-educated and hardworking individuals. Instilling in me a desire to never give up. Both having grown up in the harsh city of Chicago my father went to the army and married my mother after high school. Even though their marriage did not last. I watched how each of them handle adversity and triumphed through it.
I remember being told by my father that my daughter while visiting him in Arkansas, she had negotiated a contract signing with my son, in regards to him washing dishes and I knew then that my definite calling was to become an Attorney. Recognizing I could leave my indelible mark on the world for my children to relish. Then enlightened enough to know these marriages nearly shattered my existence. I became less of myself each time. Losing all my self desires and making my life all about my family and their needs. Balancing life and love is often difficult at times. I have come to realize that my time is now. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
This is an important point in my life and this decision could not come at a better time. I enrolled in night classes while working full-time during the day. It was tough to balance work, family, and studies, but the example of my hard-working family kept me going. My children, now grown, were my biggest supporters. They saw me stay up late studying, yet still manage to be there for their important moments. Sometimes I felt exhausted, but I remembered my father’s words and the desire to set a good example. I wanted to prove that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Bit by bit, I made progress in my studies.
I get incredible joy out of challenging what I consider unfair. As I studied law, I found my passion for fighting for justice. I took part in legal aid projects, helping those who couldn’t afford expensive lawyers. Seeing the difference I could make in people’s lives was amazing. After years of hard work, I finally earned my Bachelor’s degree and went on to become an attorney. Now, when I look back, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. My story shows that with determination and the support of family, you can overcome any obstacle. I hope my children will always remember that they can achieve anything they set their minds to, no matter the challenges.

B AI-generated videos are often entertaining for children.
C. YouTube is recommending false claims to children.
D. Children are exposed to false information due to AI.
9. Why is AI-generated content particularly dangerous for children?
A. Because it is always disguised as educational content.

C Identifying what behaviors cause unwanted or unhappy emotions.
D. Keeping yourself safe with the help of family and friends.

Approximately 10 years ago, I decided I wanted to complete my Bachelor’s. My children were getting older and I wanted to show them that age was only a number and anything can be accomplished if you work for it.
Now that I have raised 2 children and faced adversity head-on throughout my life. No more waiting and wondering what could have been.
