Beijing, October 18 — Yang Zhenning, a world-famous physicist, Nobel Prize winner, and professor at Tsinghua University, passed away in Beijing on October 18 due to illness. He was 103 years old.
Yang was born in Hefei, Anhui Province, in 1922. When he was 13, after reading a book about the universe, he told his parents, “I want to win the Nobel Prize one day”. This “bold dream” came true when he was 35. In 1957, he and Li Zhengdao won the Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering that parity is not conserved in weak interactions. It was a revolutionary finding that changed how scientists understand the universe.
His most important work, however, was the “Yang-Mills gauge Theory” proposed in 1954 with Mills. This theory is like a “foundation stone” of modern physics, similar to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Later, he also found the “Yang-Baxter Equation,” opening new paths for scientific research.
Yang loved his motherland deeply. In 1971, when China and the US started to build better ties, he became the first famous Chinese scholar to visit China. He was so moved to learn China made its atomic bomb by itself that he cried. Back in the US, he talked about China’s progress everywhere, encouraging many Chinese scholars to come back.
In 1999, he returned to Tsinghua University to teach. Even in his 80s, he still gave lessons to first-year students. He raised money to help Chinese scientists study abroad and set up research centers in many universities. In 2015, he gave up his US citizenship and became a Chinese Academy of Sciences member.
“He is like a circle,” people said. “He started in Tsinghua Garden, went to the world stage, and finally came home.” Yang Zhenning’s life tells us: with passion for science and love for our country, we can achieve great things.
4. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To explain Yang Zhenning’s scientific theories
B. To report Yang Zhenning’s death and summarize his life
C. To compare Yang Zhenning with other physicists
D. To criticize American science policies
5. When did Yang Zhenning win the Nobel Prize?
A. 1922 B. 1954 C. 1957 D. 1971
6. What does “foundation stone” mean in paragraph 3?
A. A heavy rock used in construction B. A basic principle that supports other ideas
C. A type of scientific equipment D. A simple concept that anyone can understand
7. What does the “circle” suggest about Yang’s life?
A. He traveled around the world. B. His life had no clear direction.
C. He liked circular shapes. D. He returned to where he began.

Sleeping in on weekends to make up for lost sleep during the week may offer mental health benefits for teenagers and young adults, according to new research from the University of Oregon. The study found that people aged 16 to 24 who caught up on sleep over the weekend were significantly less likely to report symptoms of depression. Compared with those who did not recover sleep on weekends, this group showed a 41 percent lower risk of depressive symptoms.
The researchers analyzed data from 16- to 24-year-olds who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2021-2023. Participants reported their typical bedtimes and wake-up times on weekdays and weekends. Using this information, the researchers calculated weekend catch-up sleep by comparing the average amount of sleep per weekend day with the average amount per weekday. Participants also reported their emotional well-being and were classified as having symptoms of depression if they said they felt sad or depressed every day.
Biological sleep rhythms, known as circadian (生理节奏的) rhythms, naturally change during adolescence. These shifts make it harder for teens to fall asleep early, even when they are tired. “Instead of being a morning lark (早起的人), you’re going to become more of a night owl,” explained Melynda Casement, a licensed psychologist. “And sleep beginning keeps progressively delaying in adolescence until age 18 to 20. After that, you start becoming more morning larkish again.”
For many teenagers, the natural sleep window falls around 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. This schedule often conflicts with early school start times. Because of this mismatch, many sleep experts and health care providers support efforts to delay school start times as a public health measure.
“It’s normal for teens to be night owls, so let them catch up on sleep on weekends if they can’t get enough sleep during the week because that’s likely to be somewhat protective,” Casement said.
8. What can we know about the impact of weekend sleep from paragraph 1?
A. It benefits future profession. B. It increases social interaction.
C. It contributes to mental health. D. It enhances academic performance.
9. How did the researchers obtain their study data?
A. Through tracking participants’ sleep.
B. Through self-report from subjects.
C. By analyzing different kinds of depressive diseases.
D. By working out teenagers’ daily sleeping time.
10. What is implied about early school start times for teenagers?
A. They ignore teens’ sleep rhythms shift.
B. They match biological needs.
C. They help students keep a healthy lifestyle.
D. They go against educational regulations.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Depression Symptoms Rise in Young Adults
B. Circadian Rhythm Shifts in Adolescent Years
C. Weekend Sleep May Lower Teen Depression
D. School Timetables Conflict with Teen Sleep
Art is everywhere. Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful. Why, then, is art still so widely considered to be “the easy subject” at school, insignificant to wider society, a waste of time and effort?
Art can connect culture with commercial products in a way that not many other things can; art generates money and holds significant emotional and cultural value within communities. When people attend a concert, they are paying for music, sure, maybe even hotel rooms, meals, and transport, but they also gain an incredible experience, a unique atmosphere and a memory that will go through the rest of their lives. People don’t just want material things anymore, they want to experience life—the arts are a perfect crossover between culture and commerce.
Furthermore, the arts can bring communities together, reducing loneliness and making people feel safer. Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts experiences through reflection and discussion, and their expression of common values through artworks in honour of events significant to a nation’s experience.
The arts clearly have a pretty positive impact on physical and psychological health. It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not; more engagement with the arts is linked to a higher level of people’s well-being. The Royal Society of Public Health discovered that music and art, when used in hospitals, help to improve the conditions of patients by reducing stress, anxiety and blood pressure.
Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education: those engaged with drama have greater literary ability while others taking part in musical practice exhibit greater skills in math and languages. Kids with preference for the arts have a greater chance of finding employment in the future. Participating in the arts is essential for child development; encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life.
Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used by nations across the world for various purposes. Life without art would be boring and dead still, for art is a part of what makes us human.
12. Art products differ from most other commercial products because ________.
A. most people purchase them for collection B. they are more expensive and less accessible
C. they have both commercial and cultural values D. their prices may climb up as time passes
13. By sharing their arts experiences, community members can ________.
A. keep the community safe from illnesses B. develop a stronger tie between them
C. learn to appreciate their own works of art D. offer honourable solutions to their problems
14. What can we learn about people who are involved in artistic activities?
A. They enjoy better living conditions.
B. They like to compare themselves with others.
C. They are particularly good at both music and art.
D. They tend to be healthier physically and mentally.
15. How does kids’ engagement with the arts benefit them?
A. It promotes their academic performance and emotional growth.
B. It gives them more confidence in exhibiting their learning skills.
C. It inspires their creativity in designing their future career.
D. It helps to make responsible people out of them.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jenny had a talent for music. She joined the campus choir (合唱团) soon after entering high school and enjoyed the after-school activity greatly. Two months later, the choir teacher Miss Music announced there would be a year-end choir concert, the school year’s highlight.
To her surprise, Miss Music gave her a challenging solo (独唱). “I’ve never done that. I’m afraid I can’t...” Jenny hesitated. “You have a beautiful voice. Practice hard and you can make it,” she encouraged her. Jenny agreed, sparing no effort to practice under her guidance.
During her practice, Jenny often saw Eli, a senior who sang an inspiring song at the freshman opening ceremony that impressed all the attendees, including Jenny. He’d led the choir to city awards and now helped guide new members. He gave her breath control tips patiently, stabilizing her singing. Jenny was grateful for that.
The big day came. Jenny spotted Eli in the hall backstage, helping with the routines. Then she noticed a single microphone standing at the front of the stage, lit by a bright spotlight, ready for her solo. She had never sung into a microphone and she forgot to ask Miss Music for advice. “The microphone might not be much of a problem,” she thought.
It was her turn to sing. Miss Music motioned for her to go up in front of that microphone. Despite her uncertainty, her solo began smoothly. She felt relieved, singing confidently. Then she got to the last high note. With her lips nearly touching the microphone, the note came bursting out of the loud speakers (音箱), deafeningly loud. Every single person jerked (急拉) backward, jaws dropping.
Shame swept over Jenny. “Never will I sing in front of people again,” she thought, rushing out, determined to skip the choir’s upcoming performance. She walked down the hallway, tears of sadness welling up in her eyes.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, she heard Eli calling out, “Jenny, wait!”

Suddenly, she heard Eli calling out, “Jenny, wait!” Turning back, Jenny met Eli’s warm and understanding eyes. He handed her tissues. “My first solo was even worse — I messed up the rhythm and made a fool of myself. But courage means moving forward despite errors,” he continued. “The new microphone is sensitive; your voice is clear and emotional.
