Helen Cowan had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. At first, she thought something had fallen from her recently renovated (翻新的) house. But as she walked to the front of the house, she saw a small crowd gathered on the sidewalk outside.
As she walked towards the crowd, she saw a boy lying in a pool of blood near a crashed motorbike. His leg was almost cut off at the knee. Luckily, when Helen asked about his condition, the young man could still talk, even though he was in great pain.
Helen had knowledge of first aid and had also taken a British Red Cross first aid course. She used her training to make a quick assessment (评估) of the situation. Then she ran back inside her home to get several thick towels to stop the bleeding.
As Helen returned to the scene with the towels, someone from the crowd had called an ambulance, but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel as well as I could to apply pressure to the wound until help arrived,” Helen recalled. Then she successfully managed to control the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived at the scene.
Unluckily, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the simple but effective first aid skills Helen used, the result of this accident could have been far worse.
“Knowing first aid gave me the confidence to look at the situation, to stay calm, and most importantly, to step forward to help in an emergency situation when others wouldn’t. I feel so happy that my first aid knowledge helped me save a stranger’s life,” Helen said.

Anger isn’t a good feeling. Anger may make us feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal. Unluckily, many of us like to keep our feelings hidden (隐藏的). A study shows that this can make a big difference to our health.
Is it better to cry or break things whenever something makes us angry? The study points out that when we show our anger in this way, we probably can’t get on well with our friends or our family. The longer time we keep being angry, the worse result we’ll get. So how can we deal with our angry feelings in a right way?
First, know what makes us angry. Anger is often because of feelings of being too afraid, disappointment and so on.
Also, care more about those everyday things that will make us angry. For example, we may get angry in the long lines at the store. Take a step back and think that it isn’t personal. Everyone in the line has dinner to make, just like us.
One way of dealing with anger is to talk about it. The study shows that if we name our feelings, we can slowly calm ourselves down and feel better. Take some deep breaths or find some helpful exercise to do. Exercise helps with feelings of anger.
If we learn to deal with anger, we will be happier and healthier.
28. Which picture shows the relation between the time of being angry (x) and the bad result of that (y)?
A. B. C.
29. Which can help deal with the feelings of anger according to the passage?
a. exercising
b. eating delicious food
c. taking some deep breaths
d. talking about the feelings
A. a, b, c B. a, b, d C. a, c, d
30. Which word is close to the underlined word “disappointment”?
A. sadness B. joy C. shock

A. Why Are You Angry?
B. What Makes You Angry
C. How to Deal with Anger?

There were many plants in a forest. When spring came, a pine tree saw a red rose nearby and said, “What a beautiful flower!” The rose proudly said, “It seems that I am the most beautiful flower in this forest.” Then the rose looked at a cactus (仙人掌) and said, “Look at that ugly plant full of thorns (刺)!”
“What a proud flower!” thought the tree.
As days passed, the red rose often looked at the cactus and said bad words to it. The cactus never got angry and even tried to advise the rose, “God did not create any form of life without a purpose.”
Spring passed, and the weather became very hot. As there was no rain, the red rose began to wilt (枯萎).
One day the rose saw birds put their beaks (喙) into the cactus and then fly away. The red rose asked the pine tree what the birds were doing. The pine tree explained that the birds were getting water from the cactus.
“The cactus has water?” asked the rose.
“Yes, you can also drink some from it. The birds can bring water to you if you ask the cactus for help.”
The red rose felt too ashamed to ask for water from the cactus. But finally it did ask for help. The cactus kindly agreed.

Last Monday was a day full of ups and downs, teaching me how much emotions can change everything.
In the morning, I forgot ____46____ my maths homework. When Mr Lee asked for it, I felt a ____47____ wave rushing over me. I was so anxious that I started to shout ____48____ my deskmate, Lily, blaming her for not reminding me. Her eyes turned red, and she said quietly, “I did remind you yesterday.” Those words hit me hard. I realized how mean I’d been-there was no reason to hurt her.
After class, I apologized to Lily. To my surprise, she smiled and said, “It’s okay.” We all get upset sometimes. Her ____49____ made me feel warm. That afternoon, our class won the basketball game.
根据后文“pushing his arm through a glass door”,可知伤口在手臂上。
根据“while their mum went to the shops”,姐姐在家应是“caring for”照顾弟弟。
“use sth. to do sth.”
if和because逻辑相反。
根据“see Dylan’s blood”(看到血)和“wait in another room”(在别的房间等待),可知她是感到“nervous”紧张害怕。
根据前文“their mum went to the shops”,此处对应妈妈回来。
“what to do”为固定结构,意为“做什么”。

30. Which word is close to the underlined word “disappointment”?

The rose learned a lesson: ▲

Everyone thought it was such a joyful thing that we jumped and cheered together. I noticed how differently people behave when they were happy—no one argued, and even the shyest students high-fived each other.
That day taught me that emotions are like mirrors. They show who we really are. When we let anger take over, we might hurt the people around us. But when we hold onto kindness and gratitude (感激), we make the world ____50____ than before.
46. to bring
47. negative
48. at 49. kindness

因为“shout at sb.”
