When we think of ancient China,we often
picture great walls,palaces,and silk.But food also
tells a fascinating story of its past!
The Importance of Staple Foods(主食)
In ancient China,the two most important
staple foods were rice in the south and millet in
the north.Rice has been grown in China for over
8,000 years.It was so valuable(珍贵的)that it
was sometimes used as money.Millet,a small
round grain,was cooked into porridge or made
into bread.Both grains were the base of most
meals.
A Famous Ancient Dish
One of the oldest recorded dishes is
“Geng”一a thick soup or stew(炖菜)made with
meat,vegetables,and grains.It was popular
during the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-256 BC).
People cooked it in large bronze pots over fire.
Unlike today's recipes(烹饪法),ancient Geng
often mixed sweet and savory(咸的)tastes..

In ancient China,food was linked to health
and balance.Many people followed the ideas of
yin and yang.They believed some foods were
“heating”,like ginger(姜),and some were
“cooling”,like cucumber.Eating a balance of

Noodles have been found in an archaeological

to 4,000 years ago!They were made from millet
