Once there was a man traveling in a village. As he was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped. He saw small ropes being tied to the huge elephants' front legs. It was clear that the elephants could, at any time, break away from their ropes, but for some reason, they did not.
He saw “an old man nearby and asked him why these animals just stood there and didn't try to run away. “Well,” the old man said, “when they were very young and much smaller, we used the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it was enough to hold them. As they grow up, they still believe they can not run away.”
“How could it be? These animals could at any time be free from their ropes. But they stayed at the same place just because they believed they couldn't,” the man said.

Do you like playing little jokes on your friends and family? A new study found we're not the only ones who like doing this. Apes(类人猿) have great fun doing this too. A group of scientists studied the apes from the San Diego Zoo in the US and the Leipzig Zoo in Germany. They were surprised to find out that apes love to tease each other.
Some apes would give their friends something only to take it back quickly, or tickle( 挠痒痒)each other happily. They liked to pull their friends’ hair and some even walked into their friends and fell over for fun. Often, if one ape didn't play back, the other ape would keep doing the same funny thing again and again. The young apes enjoyed doing this the most, just like little kids do.
Isabelle Laumer, one scientist in this group, told the newspaper, “When little kids play jokes on their mother, they like to watch how she reacts(作出反应)carefully. We see that in these great apes, too.” What’s more, the study found that these young apes made special sounds when playing jokes. It was their way of showing their happiness for joking around.
Next, scientists will spend more time finding out why the apes love playing jokes on each other. They think knowing this can help us learn more about how apes and people show their feelings.

In the past, scientists believed that in ancient human societies, men hunted animals for food while women gathered(采集) plants to eat. 61 Researchers at two universities in Washington found that women also hunted animals.
The scientists studied 63 societies, including 25 groups from the Americas, 15 from Australia, and 12 from Africa. The team examined information about these societies that was collected between 1888 and 2020. 62 And in most of these groups, women were said to have hunted on purpose. They actively went out and looked for animals for food. Women hunted animals of all sizes, including large ones.
The researchers also found that women hunted differently from men. 63 But men maybe hunted alone. Women would hunt with children, carrying babies or letting older children join them. 64 For example, among the Agta people of the Philippines, men mainly hunted with bows and arrows (弓箭) , while women maybe used knives as well as bows and arrows to hunt.
The new study supported the earlier research that women in ancient human societies hunted. In 2020, researchers found that 11 skeletons(骸骨)from places across the Americas—which were buried(埋葬) with tools for hunting large animals—were women. 65
A. A skeleton found in 2008 was the King.
B. Women also used different hunting tools.
C. One skeleton of a girl was 9,000 years old.
D. However, the result of a new study challenged this idea.
E. It was possible for women to hunt in groups.
F. Humans entered into the farming society years ago.
G. They found that most groups showed signs of women hunting.

Accidents often happen in schools around the world. For this reason, the ICRC(红十字国际委员会)began its education program in 2017. First aid(急救)training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Kalida is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor. She lives in Aghdam in Azerbaijan(阿塞拜疆). She took part in ICRC’s first aid training in 2021. One important lesson she learned was that in accidents everyone must take care of themselves first before helping others.
Since attending the training, Kalida has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She even taught some students and her cousins some of the skills. “The training is important, ” Kalida said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Now we can carry out some of the skills correctly in different situations.”
Marisela teaches at a school in Venezuela(委内瑞拉). The most important thing Marisela learned from the first aid training was to stay calm in order to make herself safe. The training has made her a strong and confident person and an excellent first aider(急救员). She and other teachers have already treated small injuries. Besides, they have taught their students some first aid skills.
Thanks to the ICRC’s first aid training, many students and teachers, like Kalida and Marisela, have become professional first aiders. While bringing these skills back to their families and communities, they will always carry the feeling of safety, confidence and resilience(韧性)within themselves.
86. Why did the ICRC begin its education program around the world?
87. When did Kalida take part in the ICRC’s first aid training?
88. What was the most important thing Marisela learned from the first aid training?
89.What kind of person did this training make Marisela?
