Scott Johnson, named the Kentucky Teacher of the Year, spent nearly a year researching, designing, and perfecting a 3D-printed artificial hand for his fourth-grade student Lucas.
Born without his right hand, Lucas used a skin tone rubber type hand, which had limited function. He even couldn’t actually grip (紧抓) things.
Without telling Lucas, Johnson began building a custom design — reaching out to engineers, studying existing models, and fine-tuning details. “For the longest time, I didn’t tell anyone other than my wife what I was working on,” Johnson said. “What if I was trying to do something far beyond my skill set? I didn’t want to falsely get anyone’s hopes up.” When the school’s “Back to School Bash” arrived, Johnson finally revealed the model. “So, I told him I made this, and that I would like to make one for him.” Johnson recalled. With approval from Lucas’ mom, the project officially became a reality.
The result is a lightweight, strong hand made of tough bioplastic, with foam and smooth interiors for comfort. Most impressively, the hand is completely mechanical — no electronics required. Lucas controls it using his own wrist movements: flexing down closes the fingers into a grip, flexing up opens them again. Internal wires help fingers tighten naturally. Each hand only takes 25 hours to print, four hours to assemble (组装), and costs $ 20 in materials. Johnson covered all expenses, a sharp contrast to medical artificial hands that cost families thousands.
This is only the beginning. Johnson is creating an updated version based on Lucas’ daily feedback. He plans to resize and reprint the hand as Lucas grows, and even teach him to modify the design on his own. “We can scale up the file as he gets older. One day, he’ll be able to make his own edits. That’s the goal.”
4. What is the disadvantage of Lucas’ original artificial hand?
A. It was costly to maintain. B. It made the skin painful.
C. It was quite heavy to wear. D. It had restricted function.
5. Why did Johnson keep his project secret at first?
A. To preserve Lucas’ dignity. B. To avoid disappointing others.
C. To get permission from Lucas’ mom. D. To give a surprise at the school event.
6. What can we know about Lucas’ 3D-printed hand?
A. It operates through an electronic system.
B. It can be controlled by his wrist motions.
C. It is time-consuming to print and assemble.
D. It is more expensive than traditional artificial ones.
7. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Lucas may eventually adjust the 3D-printed hand by himself.
B. Lucas will no longer need an artificial hand as he grows older.
C. Johnson has already updated the design according to user feedback.
D. Johnson plans to make more disabled people benefit from the innovation.

When I was young, I loved paper cutting and I was pretty good at it. As I grew up, I became busy and didn’t have much time for it. Later, I stopped doing it.
However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong was practicing lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team (专业舞狮表演队) passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs for her and quickly she did a lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture evoked my strong memories of paper cutting.
I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper cutting club. Every Monday and Friday, I learned to make paper cuttings there. Our teacher, Ms. Li, was very talented. With a pair of scissors and a piece of paper, she could create lively works (作品). That amazed us. And we learned much from her. Together, we created lots of works. They covered many topics, including animals, flowers and things about Chinese history. Every time we held a paper cutting show, our works attracted many visitors. The girl in the news encouraged me to go on with paper cutting. I want to be an inheritor (继承者) of the ancient Chinese culture. Together with other inheritors, I hope to pass down our excellent culture.
8. What did the girl do after the team began to beat drums and gongs for her?
A. She watched their show carefully. B. She did a lion dance in return.
C. She cheered for the team. D. She made a paper cutting for the team.
9. How often did the writer learn paper cutting in the club?
A. Every day. B. Twice a week.
C. Once a week. D. Twice a month.
10. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The long history of paper cutting.
B. The steps of making paper cuttings.
C. The writer’s happy times of making paper cuttings.
D. The writer’s plans for setting up a paper cutting club.
11. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. The writer wasn’t good at paper cutting at a young age.
B. Now the writer practices paper cutting once a week.
C. The writer hopes to be an inheritor of paper cutting.
D. After watching the news, the writer decided to learn lion dance.

In today’s rapidly urbanizing world, cities are transforming into complex digital ecosystems, and the next big shift is already underway: collaborative sensing (CS). As urban population swells and underlying facilities come under pressure, the need for intelligent, responsive, and efficient city systems has never been more urgent. Enter smart cities — urban areas powered by connected technologies — and at the heart of this transformation lies a powerful concept that is quietly reshaping urban life: collaborative sensing.
CS, sometimes referred to as participatory or crowdsensing, is the process where numerous devices and people contribute data to collectively monitor, analyze, and improve a city’s operations. From detecting air pollution to maximizing traffic flow or even predicting natural disasters, CS allows cities to gain a real-time, specific understanding of what’s happening on the ground. This isn’t just about sensors planted on street lights — it’s about smartphones, vehicles, wearables, and public facilities working integratedly.
This interconnected approach holds massive potential. Imagine a city where holes are identified by the shaking of your car, where garbage pickup is improved based on bin fill levels, or where the urban heat island effect is reduced through collective temperature mapping. These are not future predictions — they’re real projects already unfolding in global tech-forward cities like Singapore, Barcelona, and Amsterdam.
But this shift isn’t without its questions. Who owns the data? How do we balance monitoring and privacy? And can smaller or developing cities tap into this wave of innovation?
Looking ahead, the question is no longer if cities will adopt CS — it’s how quickly and how responsibly. Whether you’ re a policymaker, urban planner, developer, or engaged citizen, now is the time to get involved in shaping the connected cities of tomorrow and dive deep into how CS is redefining the blueprint for smart cities.
12. What does the underlined word “swells” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Expands. B. Appears. C. Removes. D. Stabilizes.
13. What can be inferred about CS in paragraphs 2-3?
A. It relies mainly on public sensors. B. Daily devices can be used as its tools.
C. Tech-forward cities gain more from it. D. Its projects are resisted in advanced cities.
14. Why does the writer raise questions in paragraph 4?
A. To suggest that CS be delayed indefinitely.
B. To prove that privacy outweighs innovation.
C. To imply that CS is inaccessible to poor cities.
D. To show that unresolved issues need attention.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Fresh Solution for Smarter Cities. B. Smart Cities in Wealthy Urban Areas.
C. Smartphone-Driven City Management. D. Potential Risks in Urban Data Collection.

Last weekend, my father made a plan to go hiking with me in the quiet mountain forest not far from our town, hoping to help me relax from the tiring school study.
The moment we stepped into the forest, we were surrounded by fresh air filled with the scent of grass and trees. Bright sunlight shone through the thick leaves, casting lovely spots on the winding path. Birds were singing cheerfully in the branches, and beautiful wild flowers bloomed everywhere.
We walked slowly along the path, chatting casually and enjoying the peaceful and lovely natural scenery happily. I couldn’t help taking deep breaths, feeling all my tiredness gone.
Suddenly, a weak and sad sound broke the lovely silence. It sounded like a small bird crying for help. Curious and worried, we followed the soft sound step by step. Soon, we found a tiny little bird lying helplessly on the soft grass. Its right wing was hurt badly and bleeding slightly, making it unable to fly. It looked up at us with its round, painful eyes, trembling slightly. Looking at the poor little creature, a strong sense of sympathy rose in my heart and I made up my mind to help it recover and return to nature.

Yours,

【答案】
Dear Tom,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking about the impact of AI on high school students’ learning. Here are my thoughts.
On the one hand, AI is of great help. It can provide us with personalized learning resources and answer our questions instantly, which greatly improves our learning efficiency. On the other hand, it brings some hidden dangers. Over-relying on AI may make students lazy and lose the ability to think independently.
In my opinion, AI is a double-edged sword. We should make good use of it as a helpful tool rather than depend on it entirely.
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】My father and I carefully picked up the poor bird and took it home gently. We found a small box, lined it with soft cotton, and put the bird in it carefully to make it comfortable. My father cleaned its injured wing with clean water and disinfected it gently to stop the bleeding, while I fed it some warm millet and clean water. Every day after school, I would check on it, change the cotton, and feed it on time. The little bird gradually stopped trembling and would tilt its head to look at me, as if showing its gratitude. With our careful care, its wing healed little by little.
Days later, the bird’s wing recovered completely and it was time to set it free. We took the bird back to the mountain forest where we found it. I opened the box gently, and the bird hopped out, fluttering its wings happily. It circled around us twice, as if saying goodbye, then flew into the thick branches and joined the other birds. Watching it fly freely in the sky, I felt a strong sense of joy and achievement. My father patted my shoulder and said, “Helping small creatures return to nature is the most meaningful thing.” I nodded, knowing that kindness can bring warmth to both others and myself.
