Liu Cixin, a renowned Chinese sci-fi writer, was awarded the “Touching China” Award for his lifelong dedication to sci-fi creation. Born in 1963 in Yangquan, Shanxi Province, he developed a deep passion for science and literature from an early age, which laid a solid foundation for his future writing career.
After graduating in 1985, Liu took a stable job as an engineer in a local factory while persisting in sci-fi writing in his spare time. His early creative journey was full of hardships: his works were repeatedly rejected by various magazines, and some literary critics even regarded sci-fi as “unrealistic” and not worth serious attention. Yet he never changed his deep love for sci-fi, spending every spare minute reading professional books and revising his works carefully, determined to prove the unique value of Chinese sci-fi to the world.
In 2015, Liu made history by winning the 73rd Hugo Award for Best Novel with The Three-Body Problem — the first Asian to win this “Nobel Prize of sci-fi”. Taking nearly 10 years to finish, the work has been translated into 35 languages and sold 30 million copies worldwide, breaking the international marginalization (国际边缘化) of Chinese sci-fi. It not only brought Chinese sci-fi to the global stage but also made it gain worldwide attention.
Over the past decades, Liu has never given up his original intention of sci-fi creation, creating many classic works and winning numerous important awards at home and abroad. His determination and persistent efforts have made him stand out in the competitive sci-fi field, inspiring countless people to pursue their dreams bravely and perfectly proving that firm will always lead to success.

A new study finds that girls are better at reading and writing than boys as early as the fourth grade, and this gap continues to widen until their senior year.
Scientists usually agree that boys and girls are psychologically more alike than different. But literacy seems to be an exception. The study, published in American Psychologist, provided further evidence for this view. To carry out the study, a professional research team carefully analyzed 30 years of continuous national assessment data, covering a total of more than 3 million students from Grades 4, 8 and 12 across different regions. In addition, they considered various influential factors, such as students’ physical or learning disabilities and their family’s social and economic status. Furthermore, the researchers systematically measured students’ literacy levels by evaluating their ability to understand, analyze and interpret various types of texts.
Overall, girls outperformed boys in literacy tests by Grade 4, and kept the lead as they grew older. The gap was more obvious in writing than in reading. Other possible causes include boys’ behavioral problems like class disruption. David Reilly, lead author of the study, said, “The study confirmed that the gender gap for writing tasks has been greatly underestimated, and despite our best efforts to change teaching methods, the gap hasn’t reduced over time. ”
Researchers listed three possible reasons. First, learning problems like reading difficulties are more common among boys. Second, boys prefer more active, physical activities instead of reading and language work, which is considered more suitable for girls. Third, boys and girls use their brain hemispheres in slightly different ways.

With the rapid development of science and technology, electronic products are updated faster and faster, leading to a sharp increase in electronic waste (e-waste). A UN report shows global e-waste reached 59 million metric tons in 2025 and will grow by 20% in five years without effective measures. Unlike ordinary garbage, e-waste contains harmful substances like lead and mercury, which can leak into soil and water and damage the ecological balance.
To address this serious problem, many countries have started special projects for e-waste recycling. Japan has set a practical model by collecting used electronics to make Olympic medals, which not only reduces waste but also raises public environmental awareness. China has issued policies to promote e-waste classification, encouraging enterprises to develop technologies to extract valuable elements from e-waste.
However, global e-waste recycling is still far from satisfactory. Despite efforts from some countries, the overall recycling rate remains very low worldwide. According to the International E-waste Association, only 17.4% of global e-waste was properly recycled in 2025, and the rate in developing countries is even lower, below 10%. These figures show most e-waste is still not dealt with properly. Meanwhile, e-waste recycling faces serious challenges: for one thing, many people lack classification awareness and throw e-waste away with ordinary rubbish, seldom realizing its environmental influence; for another, some small workshops use improper disposal methods, which not only waste resources but also cause serious pollution and long-term harm to the environment.
In fact, dealing with e-waste needs long-term and continuous efforts. Experts stress that it is a complex global problem that cannot be solved in a short time. They believe only with the joint efforts of governments, enterprises and the public can we effectively handle e-waste and better protect the environment.
32. What explaining method is mainly used in paragraph 2?
A. Make examples. B. List the data.
C. Make a comparison. D. Give a definition.
33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The global e-waste recycling rate is very high.
B. People in developing countries have a higher recycling rate.
C. Low public awareness leads to serious recycling problems.
D. Illegal disposal of e-waste has no effect on the environment.
34. What do experts think of the e-waste problem?
A. It is too difficult to solve.
B. Enterprises play the most important role.
C. It will be settled naturally in the future.
D. It requires joint efforts from all sides.
35. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. E-waste: Problems and Solutions. B. Ways to Protect the Environment.
C. The Development of Electronic Products. D. The Harm of E-waste to the Environment.
A 33. C 34. D 35. A

根据第二段中“Japan has set a practical model by collecting used electronics to make Olympic medals, which not only reduces waste but also raises public environmental awareness. China has issued policies to promote e-waste classification, encouraging enterprises to develop technologies to extract valuable elements from e-waste.(日本通过收集废旧电子产品制作奥运奖牌,树立了一个切实可行的榜样,不仅减少了浪费,还提高了公众的环保意识。中国出台政策促进电子垃圾分类,鼓励企业开发从电子垃圾中提取有价值元素的技术)”可知,第二段主要通过举例日本和中国在电子垃圾回收方面的做法来阐述如何应对电子垃圾问题,即使用了举例子的说明方法。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Meanwhile, e-waste recycling faces serious challenges: for one thing, many people lack classification awareness and throw e-waste away with ordinary rubbish, seldom realizing its environmental influence.(与此同时,电子垃圾回收面临着严峻的挑战:一方面,许多人缺乏分类意识,将电子垃圾与普通垃圾一起扔掉,很少意识到其对环境的影响)”可知,公众意识低导致了严重的回收问题。
根据最后一段中“They believe only with the joint efforts of governments, enterprises and the public can we effectively handle e-waste and better protect the environment.(他们认为,只有政府、企业和公众共同努力,才能有效处理电子垃圾,更好地保护环境)”可知,专家认为电子垃圾问题需要各方共同努力。
Have you faced any tough situations recently? Have you struggled with problems that seemed impossible to overcome? This is what we call “adversity” — a difficult or unlucky event we all meet in life. ____36____ . But with the right methods, we can turn these challenges into chances to grow.
Keep an active attitude to life
Adversities are not just obstacles that stop us. ____37____ . Believe in yourself, stay positive, and accept that problems are just part of our life. Every time we fight against and get through a difficulty, we become more confident and stronger.
____38____
Big adversities often seem impossible to beat at first, but if we divide them into small and manageable steps, we will make progress little by little. For example, if you fail a math exam, don’t lose heart. Just make a plan to improve one part of the subject each week.
Turn to people around you for help
Some students prefer to face adversities alone, thinking that asking for help means being weak. ____39____ . Our teachers and parents have rich experience and are always willing to guide us. Sharing our worries with close friends can also make us feel relaxed and gain new ideas.
In a word, adversity is unavoidable. ____40____ . By following the methods above, we can grow stronger and wiser through every challenge.
A. Start small to beat hardships
B. Ignore hardships and stay confident
C. Yet we can choose to stand up against it
D. It is wise to solve all problems by yourself
E. We all experience adversity throughout our life
F. They are also valuable chances for our personal growth
G. Actually, this is a wrong idea that stops us from making progress
E 37. F 38. A 39. G 40. C

上文“This is what we call “adversity” — a difficult or unlucky event we all meet in life.(这就是我们所说的“逆境”——我们人生中都会遇到的艰难或不幸的事。)”
上文“Adversities are not just obstacles that stop us.(逆境不只是阻碍我们的障碍。)” 用“They are also...” 句式 not just...also...
下文“Big adversities often seem impossible to beat at first, but if we divide them into small and manageable steps, we will make progress little by little.(大的逆境起初看似无法战胜,但如果拆分成小的可行步骤,就能一点点进步。)”
根据上文“Some students prefer to face adversities alone, thinking that asking for help means being weak.(有些学生喜欢独自面对逆境,认为求助就是软弱。)”和下文“Our teachers and parents have rich experience and are always willing to guide us.(我们的老师和父母拥有丰富的人生阅历,也总是愿意为我们指引方向。)”
根据上文“In a word, adversity is unavoidable.(总之,逆境无法避免。)”和下文“By following the methods above, we can grow stronger and wiser through every challenge.(遵循以上方法,我们便能在每一次挑战中变得更强大、更睿智。)”

A father was deeply worried about his sixteen-year-old son. The boy was kind and healthy, but he completely lacked courage. Whenever he faced difficulties, he would easily give up or even cry. He was afraid of failure, afraid of being hurt, and afraid to try again. The father wanted his son to become a true man with a strong mind, so he decided to visit a wise Buddhist monk and ask him to train the boy.
The monk agreed to help. He said to the father, “Leave your son here with me. I will turn him into a brave and strong man within three months. But you must not come to see him during this period. Only by letting go can he truly grow.” The father trusted the monk and left his son without looking back.
During the three months, the monk trained the boy strictly but patiently. He trained the boy by building up his body and teaching him basic boxing skills. He taught him how to stand, hit, and protect himself in boxing practice. He also taught the boy to face pain, challenge his limits, and keep fighting even when he felt hopeless. The boy practiced hard every day, slowly becoming more determined and confident.
Three months later, the father returned eagerly. To show the boy’s progress, the monk arranged a boxing match between the boy and an experienced boxer who was far stronger and better than the boy.
As soon as the match started, the boxer struck the boy hard. The boy fell to the ground at once. But he stood up quickly, wiped the dust off his clothes, and got ready to continue. Again, the boxer knocked him down, yet each time the boy stood up immediately. This repeated many times. The boy never won a single round. He was always the loser. He got knocked down again and again, and he could hardly fight back. He was no match for the skilled boxer at all.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
Seeing this, the father sighed heavily and said in a low voice, “What a loser!”

One possible version:
Seeing this, the father sighed heavily and said in a low voice, “What a loser!” The father shook his head in disappointment, his face full of anger and sadness. “I have waited for three months and trusted you with all my heart. But look at my son — he is still so weak that he gets knocked down easily. He looks clumsy and helpless.” Hearing this, the boy lowered his head, feeling a little sad but still holding back his tears. He wanted to explain, but he remained quiet and stood there bravely.
The monk shook his head gently and looked calmly at the father. “You only focus on his failure and being knocked down, but you ignore his greatest progress. Every time he falls, he stands up again at once instead of crying or giving up. That is real courage.” Recalling what he had seen in the battle, the father stayed silent, his face turning red. He said sorry gently for his cold words, hugged his son tightly with pride, as he knew that being knocked down by challenges in one’s life is not shameful. The true bravery is standing up again after every fall.

The researchers hope that by understanding these root causes, we can develop more targeted support to help boys catch up and ensure all students can reach their full potential in literacy learning.
28. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. They did experiments on kids’ brain functions.
B. They analyzed long-term national educational data.
C. They assigned many students to write various texts.
D. They taught 3 million students new teaching methods.
29. What can we learn from David Reilly’s words?
A. People didn’t adopt the new teaching methods.
B. The study found no writing gap between girls and boys.
C. Changing teaching methods has successfully narrowed the gap.
D. People used to think the gender gap in writing was smaller than it is.
30. According to the study, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Learning problems are more typical of boys.
B. Girls’ reading ability becomes worse as they grow older.
C. The gap between boys and girls is the same in all grades.
D. Boys don’t work as hard as girls in reading and language work.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Why girls are better at all subjects than boys.
B. Boys and girls have different learning styles.
C. The gender gap in literacy and its possible causes.
D. How teaching methods help improve students’ literacy.
