Teenage inventor turns plastic waste into 3D printing material
A 15-year-old student from Kenya, named Elija, has created a machine that changes plastic waste into filament (丝线) for 3D printers. His invention helps solve two problems at once: plastic pollution and the high cost of 3D printing materials.
Elija got the idea two years ago when he saw piles of plastic bottles on a beach near his home. “The plastic was killing fish and birds,” he said. “I wanted to do something.” He spent his weekends reading books about engineering and watching online videos. After 18 months of trying, he finally built a small recycling machine using old car parts and a broken oven.
The machine works by melting plastic bottles and then pushing the melted plastic through a nozzle (喷嘴) to make thin, strong filament. Elija says the filament he makes costs only half the price of store-bought ones. He has already used his filament to print useful things like pencil holders and phone cases for his classmates.
Now, a local science museum has invited Elija to show his invention. He also plans to teach other teenagers how to build similar machines. “I don’t want to keep this idea to myself,” he said. “If more young people join me, we can clean up our environment together.”
Elija’s story shows that age doesn’t matter when you have a creative mind and a strong will.

Volunteering Makes Us Grow
I think middle school students should do volunteer work because it helps us learn responsibility and care for others. Last summer, I volunteered at a local animal shelter on weekends. I cleaned the cages and fed the cats and dogs. At first, I felt tired, but seeing the animals get better and find new homes made me really happy. I learned that even small actions can make a big difference. Volunteering is not a waste of time; it teaches us to be kind and thankful.
