Pang Zhongwang, a PhD student from Tsinghua University, won the 2024 “Touching China” Award. From a poor boy to an inspiring hero, his story has touched many hearts.
Born into a poor family, Pang faced countless difficulties at a young age. His father had a severe mental illness and his mother, disabled by a serious birth condition, could hardly move around. Pang lived with a serious heart disease. To support his family, he went from door to door to borrow money for his mother’s treatment and collected waste to pay off family debts. In spite of such a hard life, he kept a positive attitude and firmly believed that knowledge could change his fate.
With great effort, Pang was admitted to Tsinghua University in 2017 with excellent grades. At first, he was afraid he could not do well. But he kept trying and succeeded through many failures. He refused generous donations from others and only depended on school grants (助学金) and scholarships. His mother, who named him Zhongwang meaning “hope of all,” encouraged him to stay positive and look forward.
Unfortunately, his mother died in 2020, shortly before he started his PhD at Tsinghua. Now, Pang has published several academic papers and holds several patents, devoting himself to serving the country through science. He also helped a girl choose her favorite major, proving his story lights the way for others.
As the award speech declared: “Leave hardships behind, face life with a smile, and move forward with strength.” Pang’s story proves that with resilience and hope, we can all create our own brilliance.
24. What can we know about Pang’s life at a young age?

B. He lived an easy and comfortable life with his parents.

A thousand years ago, Hong Kong was covered by a dense forest. As successive waves of settlers poured into the region to build their homes, countless trees were cut down and burned to make way for human settlement. Now there is no thick forest left, though there are still some small areas covered with trees, which are called woods.
In ancient times, elephants, tigers and a rich variety of wildlife were living in the thick woodlands. However, as human populations expanded across Hong Kong, many native species gradually declined and even vanished entirely.
Early farmers grew rice and kept pigs and chickens in the valleys. To clear land, obtain fuel and protect themselves, they cut down vast numbers of trees and burnt them. Fire served as a vital resource: it warmed them through cold winters, cooked their meals and drove away dangerous beasts. With their natural habitats destroyed and food sources severely reduced, elephants soon disappeared from the region. The same fate happened to most wolves and tigers. Monkeys and numerous other wild creatures died out in a similar manner.
Many people assume that Hong Kong’s wild animals now exist only within the zoos. Yet surprisingly, around 36 distinct species of native wildlife still inhabit the area. One of the most interesting of Hong Kong’s animals is the barking deer (赤麂). These are beautiful little animals with a rich brown coat and a white patch under the tail. Though looking like common deer, they are much smaller, standing less than two feet in height. They make a noise rather like a dog barking.
In modern Hong Kong, the barking deer’s only genuine predator is human beings. Despite legal prohibitions, illegal hunting continues to threaten these gentle animals, and their numbers have dropped sharply. Consequently, it has become increasingly urgent for society to raise awareness and take action to protect Hong Kong’s remaining wild animals.
28. The underlined word “vanished” in paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. disappeared B. escaped C. increased D. emerged
29. What caused the disappearance of elephants in ancient Hong Kong?
A. They could not bear the cold winter in the area.
B. They were hunted for their ivory by early settlers.
C. They suffered from food shortages and habitat loss.
D. They were forced to leave by tigers and other fierce animals.
30. What attitude does the author hold towards wildlife protection?
A. Uninterested and doubtful. B. Supportive and worried.
C. Confident but uncaring. D. Surprised but unconcerned.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Hong Kong should build more woods for wild animals.
B. The barking deer is the most important animal in Hong Kong.
C. Human activities have totally destroyed Hong Kong’s environment.
D. Wildlife in Hong Kong has changed greatly and needs to be protected.
D
When you find math hard, you usually ask teachers or parents for help. But now, doctors can help you too!
On Oct. 8, Shanghai opened a special clinic for children who have problems with math and spatial (空间的) understanding. On that day, six students went there with their parents. At the clinic, doctors checked how well the students understood math and their spatial skills, and then made plans to help them learn better. They even had special educational games with VR and AR technologies to help students.
A recent study found that about 8.97 percent of children at primary school on the Chinese mainland have trouble with math and spatial skills, reported Shanghai Daily. Among the primary students, 11.57 percent are in low grades, 10.07 percent are in middle grades and 4.76 percent are in high grades.
The clinic is open every Tuesday. It’s very popular with days getting fully booked. Special clinics for helping with learning problems are becoming common in China, especially in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, and Nanjing.
However, experts remind parents that these clinics may help students, but they can’t magically turn them into top students. It’s more important to have realistic expectations. Shi Ping, a doctor from Tianjin Children’s Hospital told China Daily that putting too much pressure on kids can sometimes make learning harder. Parents should think about how they teach their kids and consider making some changes.
After all, just as an expert said, “Doing well in school shouldn’t be the only thing that matters in a child’s life.”
32. The special clinic in Shanghai was opened to ________.
A. help children with math difficulties B. help children build interest in math
C. provide free math courses for children D. do research on children’s learning abilities
33. What can we learn from the numbers in paragraph 3?
A. Low-grade students have more math problems.
B. Middle-grade students have no math problems.
C. High-grade students have more math problems.
D. Most primary students have math and spatial problems.
34. What can we infer from what experts and doctors said?
A. Special clinics are useless for students.
B. High expectations are helpful for children’s progress.
C. Improper family expectations may add to learning difficulties.
D. School performance is the most important part of children’s growth.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. New Ways to Teach Math B. VR and AR in School Education
C. Study Pressure on Primary Students D. Special Clinic for Kids with Math Problems

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a shy Senior One student, I had always been afraid of speaking in public. Just the thought of standing in front of many people would make my hands shake violently, my voice tremble nervously, and my mind go completely blank.
I would bury myself in the corner of the classroom, keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact with others. I never raised my hand to answer questions, let alone deliver a speech in front of the whole class. This deep fear had become a heavy limit holding me back, trapping me in my own small world and stopping me from growing.
Last month, our English teacher announced a class speech competition, which required every student to take part. My heart sank immediately when I heard the news. A wave of fear washed over me, and I felt so stressed that I even stayed up for several nights, wondering how I could escape it. I considered asking for sick leave or making up excuses to avoid the competition.
However, my deskmate noticed my obvious anxiety and encouraged me patiently, saying, “Everyone has shortcomings, and this is a valuable chance to break your limit.” My English teacher also had a gentle talk with me, emphasizing that courage and progress matter far more than perfection.
Deep in my heart, I truly wanted to change and become a better self. Therefore, I made up my mind to face my fear bravely. I chose the meaningful topic “My Growth Journey” and spent days carefully writing and polishing my speech. Every evening, I practiced it sentence by sentence in front of the mirror, trying to improve my expression and gestures. At first, I still felt extremely nervous and forgot my lines frequently, but I refused to give up. I recorded my practice, checked my mistakes carefully, and kept on trying. Whenever I felt like quitting, I would encourage myself to hold on a little longer.
注意:1.续写词数应为150词左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The day of the competition finally came.

C
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. D
【解析】

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“With their natural habitats destroyed and food sources severely reduced, elephants soon disappeared from the region. (随着它们的自然栖息地被破坏、食物来源大幅减少,大象很快从这个地区消失了。)”可知,栖息地被毁和食物短缺导致大象消失。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Despite legal prohibitions, illegal hunting continues to threaten these gentle animals, and their numbers have dropped sharply. Consequently, it has become increasingly urgent for society to raise awareness and take action to protect Hong Kong’s remaining wild animals (尽管有法律禁令,非法捕猎仍在威胁这些温顺动物,它们的数量大幅下降。因此,社会提高意识、采取行动保护香港剩余野生动物已变得愈发紧迫。)”可知,作者既担忧现状,又支持保护野生动物。
【31题详解】

Turn to people around you for help
Some students prefer to face adversities alone, thinking that asking for help means being weak. ____39____. Our teachers and parents have rich experience and are always willing to guide us. Sharing our worries with close friends can also make us feel relaxed and gain new ideas.
In short, adversity is unavoidable. ____40____. By following the methods above, we can grow stronger and wiser through every challenge.

注意:1.续写词数应为150词左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】参考范文:
The day of the competition finally came. My heart pounding wildly, I stepped onto the platform with my legs shaking and my palms sweating. The moment I stood before the class, a wave of nervousness swept over me, and for a second I could not utter a single word. However, catching the encouraging smiles from my teacher and classmates, I took a deep breath and began my speech. When I suddenly forgot my lines halfway, embarrassment burned my face. Yet I refused to give up. Holding on to my determination, I calmed myself down and carried on smoothly.
When I finished, the whole class cheered for me loudly. Thunderous applause filled the classroom, bringing tears of relief and pride to my eyes. I bowed sincerely, feeling a strong sense of achievement. My teacher praised me for my courage and my deskmate gave me a big thumbs-up. This unforgettable experience taught me that true growth comes from facing fear and sticking to our goals. From that day on, I stepped out of my comfort zone, became more confident, and realized I was far stronger than I had ever thought.
