My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, I injured my ankle and could not run for two weeks leaving only two weeks to train. Yet I was determined to go ahead.
I thought back to my 7th-grade P. E. class. I did badly in running and softball, and my P. E. teacher said I was “not athletic”. That idea stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before the marathon, I dreamed that I could not find the finish line. Nervous but determined, I was ready to prove myself. Soon after starting, my shoe laces came loose. At mile 3, I saw a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!” By mile 17, I was breathless and the once injured ankle hurt badly, but I kept going. At mile 23, my wife cheered me on; she is my biggest fan.
I finished among the last runners, but I did finish and received a medal, the same as the winner. Now I can proudly call myself a “marathon winner”, free of worldly labels

Jiang Shumei received no education as a child and learned her first Chinese character at 60. Now 87, she is the proud author of six books. She learned her first character in 1996, after her husband died in a car accident, when her daughter Zhang Ailing suggested that she learn to read to take her mind off the loneliness and sorrow.
Zhang says that her mother had her own way of learning. Whenever she came across characters she didn’t know at bus stops or shop signs, she found someone to ask. Once Jiang had learned enough characters, she started reading books and told her daughter that she wanted to write down her own stories. She began writing at 75. It was not easy. Sometimes, completing a single sentence could take a day. Jiang usually started writing at 3 or 4 am, and revised the pieces several times until she was satisfied.
Zhang began publishing her mother’s stories on social media platforms in 2013. When Zhang and her mother drew the attention of Zhang’s writer friends, they made a decision to publish them. The first book, Time of Trouble, Time of Poverty, was published later that year, and proved to be a success. Some critics (评论家) even praised it as the “live history of a nation struck by tough times”. The book earned Jiang a lot of fans and sympathy.
So far, the elderly woman has published six books. She lives a healthy life, exercising every day. “If I could live as long as 130, would you still say that it is too late for me to start after 60?” she asks, jokingly.

D. To reduce the impact of her husband’s death.
9. What made Jiang decide to publish her first book?
A. A strong inner desire. B. The attention from other writers.
C. Her daughter’s encouragement. D. The development of social media.
10. What dose the underlined word “struck” in paragraph 4 mean?

通读全文,结合最后一段中“If I could live as long as 130, would you still say that it is too late for me to start after 60? (如果我能够活到130岁,你还会说我在60岁之后才开始学习太晚了吗?)”可知,文章讲述了姜淑梅60岁开始识字、75岁开始写作并最终出版六本书的励志故事,本文传达的道理是:活到老,学到老,任何时候开始学习都不晚。

Every tree tells a story. They hold our memories, represent belief, and witness countless moments of joy and sorrow. In our imagination, there is always a place for a tree.
For the locals in Naunde, a mango tree offers shade and is a traditional place for meetings, ceremonies and solving village problems. “It is a place to meet, talk, settle arguments and develop unity,” wrote Kofi Annan. The mango tree always stands there, witnessing everything, and becomes an inseparable part of the locals’ memory. “The trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores (气孔), which helps build their tissues, so they physically hold the record of the years of their surroundings,” said Benjamin Swett, author of New York City of Trees.
The English language borrows a lot from trees: We turn over a new leaf and branch out, meaning we move on from the past and start something new. And there are times when we can’t see the wood for the trees. We tend to enjoy the flourishing leaves, branches, and roots of the trees. However, we pay little attention to the forests. The same things often happen to us in our own lives. We often dip ourselves into some bad experiences. As a result, we may give up at a terrible moment instead of imagining satisfying success after defeating the failure.
Trees inspire mankind, not just through language, but through ideas. Perhaps the most famous is a tree in a garden in Lincolnshire, England, where an apple fell and inspired young Isaac Newton to wonder: Why would that apple always fall directly to the ground? According to an 18th-century account, Newton was home from Cambridge when he stepped into the garden and into a reverie. There, the idea of gravitation (万有引力) came into his mind, inspired by an apple.
12. What is the role of a mango tree in Naunde?
A. A place to connect the locals together. B. A witness to the changing weather.
C. A generous food supplier on Earth. D. A shelter to protect villagers in disasters.
13. How do trees keep a record of their surroundings?
A. By changing the width of their growth layer.
B. By sticking out branches in different directions.
C. By absorbing carbon dioxide to build their tissues.
D. By reflecting changing climate conditions with their tiny pores.
14. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Suggestions on facing failure. B. Famous English stories about trees.
C. The relationship between trees and forests. D. Lessons from English expressions related to trees.
15. Why does the author mention Newton in the last paragraph?
A. To explain the necessity of observation.
B. To show how gravitation was discovered.
C. To stress the importance of trees in inspiring ideas.
D. To introduce how trees serve as a mirror of history.
A 13. C 14. D 15. C

The mango tree always stands there, witnessing everything, and becomes an inseparable part of the locals’ memory. “The trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores (气孔), which helps build their tissues, so they physically hold the record of the years of their surroundings,” said Benjamin Swett, author of New York City of Trees.(科菲·安南曾写道:“这是一个人们相聚、交谈、解决争端并增进团结的地方。”
根据第二段“The trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores (气孔), which helps build their tissues, so they physically hold the record of the years of their surroundings(树木通过微小的孔吸收空气中的二氧化碳,这有助于它们的组织,所以它们物理上保存了周围环境的年份记录)”可知,树木通过吸收二氧化碳构建它们的组织来记录它们周围的环境。
根据第三段“The English language borrows a lot from trees: We turn over a new leaf and branch out, meaning we move on from the past and start something new. And there are times when we can’t see the wood for the trees. We tend to enjoy the flourishing leaves, branches, and roots of the trees. However, we pay little attention to the forests. The same things often happen to us in our own lives. We often dip ourselves into some bad experiences. As a result, we may give up at a terrible moment instead of imagining satisfying success after defeating the failure.(英语语言从树木中汲取了大量灵感:我们会“翻开新一页”并“分枝拓展”,意思是我们告别过去,开始新的征程。

Bobby, a six - year - old boy without a father, was sitting in his backyard on a snowy day. He was trembling (发抖) with cold, for he wore only sports shoes with holes in them, which couldn’t keep the cold out.
He’d been there for nearly an hour, trying to come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmas gift. But he failed. With a heavy heart and tears in his eyes, he headed towards the street with shops.
He walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but he did not have money. It was getting dark and he was about to turn back home reluctantly (不情愿地), a glimmer (微光) on the roadside caught his eye. It was a shiny dime For a moment, Bobby felt unbelievably rich. He hurried into shop after shop, only to be told that his dime was too little to buy anything.
Finally, he went into a flower shop and wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby showed his dime and asked to buy a single flower for his mom’s Christmas present. The shop owner, looking at Bobby’s sincere face and his dime, gently put a hand on Bobby’s shoulder. “Wait right here. I’ll see what I can do for you,” he said. As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.
Paragraph 1:
A few minutes later, the shop owner came out.

Paragraph 2:
With the bunch (束) of roses in his hands, Bobby walked out of the door and then began to run.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few minutes later, the shop owner came out. He asked Bobby to come to the counter. There, before Bobby’s eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape. Bobby’s heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box. “That will be ten cents, young man.” the shop keeper said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true? He wondered.
With the bunch of roses in his hands, Bobby walked out of the door and then began to run. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. “Look, Mother, what have I bought for you?” Bobby called out in the backyard. Mother came out from inside the house. She could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her. “Merry Christmas!” Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. Tearfully, Mother hugged her son in her arms. Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didn’t feel cold at all.
