The "Global Positioning System",or GPS,is used by billions of people around the
world every day.It allows users to determine their exact location anywhere on Earth.Until
recently, however, very few people knew that GPS would not exist without the work of
Gladys West. Her contributions to the US Navy helped make GPS a reality.
Ms.West,a black mathematician and computer programmer, grew up working on a
farm in Virginia. She was born in 1930,when Black people in the US were treated as if
they were not equal to white people. When it was time for her to get educated,Ms.West
attended a one-room school,a place whose conditions everyone can imagine, along with
other Black children.Nevertheless, the young girl came to realize the vital importance that
education held in one's life.Having studied with great effort, she eventually won a
scholarship to Virginia State College and obtained her bachelor's degree in mathematics
upon graduation.
In 1955,President Dwight Eisenhower made it possible for Black people to hold US
government jobs.In the following year, she took part in a project designed to determine the
precise shape of the Earth. As part of her work,Ms.West had to program one of the world's
first supercomputers. Her work helped create an extremely precise mathematical model of the
Earth's shape. The exact model was used to plan the orbits of satellites for the GPS system.
Though GPS was developed for the US military,it has wound up helping people around the world
every day.
Ms.West continued to work at the lab for 42 years, until she retired in 1998.But she
didn't just stay at home after that. She went back to school and got a Ph.D.In spite of
Ms.West's success, she wasn't really recognized for her work until 2018,when she won
several awards-a delay rooted in the gender and racial discrimination she endured in her
career.

A.She lived a wealthy childhood.
B.She cared about social fairness.
C.She had a hunger for knowledge.
D.She hoped to be a mathematician.
25.Why was Gladys West's work important for GPS?
A.Because it improved GPS device performance.
B.Because it designed early man-made satellites.
C.Because it discovered rules of space movement.
D.Because it supported GPS satellite orbit planning.
26.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Female efforts deserve more recognition.
B.Great achievements can be easily ignored.
C.Science shapes the progress of modern society.
D.We need more outstanding female researchers.
27.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A Chinese economist once asked me a thought-provoking question about British
universities:"Why do you lock your young people, who are at their most creative stage,in
quiet old campuses for three years and let them enjoy too much leisure?"Every August,
this question comes to my mind.
Nowadays, the UK university system is suffering from serious problems. The number of
college students rose by 68%from 1997 to 2010.Later,the government permitted
universities to charge£9,OO0 per student each year with no limit on enrollment(入学).
Consequently, many universities lowered their teaching standards and campuses became
increasingly overcrowded. Some cities have two or even three universities, causing a huge
waste of public budget.Meanwhile, the leaders of top Russell Group universities are highly
paid, with an average yearly salary of 400,000.
Worse still, university degrees are gradually declining in value. Many employers pay
less attention to graduates'academic grades, and some even disregard whether applicants
have a degree.Ten years ago,the famous accounting firm EY abandoned the practice of
focusing on A-level results and degree grades when hiring.Official statistics show that over
a quarter of British graduates end up in low or medium-skill jobs. The economic advantages
of a university degree are declining sharply.
Actually, some practical solutions are available. As former university minister Jo Johnson
suggested,two-year courses are enough for most subjects, for current three-year programs
only provide about six months of teaching per year.Besides,large-scale mergers should be
carried out to change the situation where almost every city has two or even three
universities. It is also necessary to restore vocational colleges with closer ties to local jobs,
which was practiced by James Dyson when he founded the Dyson Institute in Wiltshire in
2017.
Of course, one shall not prematurely lose confidence in the universities. This stems
from the fact that universities are not only places for job preparation but also centers of
liberal education(通识教育)that can reach and influence a far wider population beyond its
young students.
28.Why is the Chinese economist's question mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To show concern for British youth.
B.To indicate young people's creativity.
C.To introduce challenges facing UK universities.
D.To present a thought-provoking question about education.
29.What can be inferred about UK universities from the passage?
A.They lack sufficient government funding.
B.They ignore their students'career development.
C.They attach great importance to teaching quality.
D.They face declining education and devalued degrees.
30.What does the underlined word "mergers"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Combinations.B.Revolutions.
C.Separations.
D.Organizations.
31.What is the author's attitude towards UK universities?
A.Worried and hopeless.
B.Critical but supportive.
C.Indifferent but objective.
D.Concerned and doubtful.

A new study of e-sports gamers has found that sparkling water could be a better
alternative to still water for those aiming to maintain concentration and alertness during
extended periods of desk work.
Gamers often rely on caffeine-rich drinks such as coffee or energy drinks to stay in the
zone during long sessions. However, consuming these caffeinated drinks in large quantities
poses significant potential health risks, including sleep disruption and increased heart
burden.Researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan thus sought to investigate
whether sparkling water could provide a safer and equally effective alternative.
On two separate occasions,14 casual gamers were asked to play virtual soccer for three
hours. In one trial, they drank plain water;and in the other, they consumed sparkling
water.Based on comprehensive measurements,including reaction speeds,pupil (
size changes (a key indicator of tiredness),physical stress hormones, and self-reported
exhaustion levels, the results clearly indicated that sparkling water was superior in
sustaining attention levels and minimizing tiredness.
Scientists propose a plausible theory behind this improvement. The carbon dioxide
mixed in sparkling water interacts with specific sensory receptors in the mouth known as
"transient receptor potential"(TRP)channels. This interaction triggers an increase in
mental alertness, thereby enhancing cognitive performance during extended tasks.
Beyond subjective feelings of alertness, players also reported enjoying the sessions
more when drinking sparkling water.Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed that players
committed fewer in-game errors while under its influence, although their overall offensive
and defensive skills remained unchanged.
"These findings demonstrate that sparkling water effectively reduces both subjective
and objective signs of cognitive tiredness during extended e-sports performance",the
researchers concluded.
Nevertheless, these results should be considered alongside the study's funding
sources. The research received partial financial support from a soft drink company that
manufactures the sparkling water employed in the experiments, and two of the study's
authors work for this company. These financial links introduce potential conflicts of interest
that may have biased the results.
32.What does the study focus on?
A.A better option for sustained concentration.
B.The effects of caffeine-rich drinks on gamers.
C.Measures to reduce gaming-related tiredness.
D.The role of TRP channels in mental alertness.
33.How did sparkling water affect gamers'performance?
A.By increasing physical stress levels
B.By reducing misplay during matches.
C.By improving reaction speed significantly.
D.By enhancing offensive and defensive skills

34.What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A.The core logic of the improvement.
B.The overall process of the research.
C.The key factors for the improvement.
D.The procedures for collecting experimental data.
35.What's the best title for the passage?
A.The Hidden Dangers of Caffeine Drinks
B.E-sports Gamer's New Favorite:Sparkling Water
C.A New Study on TRP Channels and Mental Alertness
D.Sparkling Water-A Safer Choice for E-sports Gamers

Teresa and I had been close friends for many years. We shared many interests and
could stay up all night chatting on the phone, laughing until our sides hurt.We were always
there for each other when we needed to complain, cry or celebrate. We were so close that
we could almost read each other's minds and finish each other's sentences. However,a
huge disagreement suddenly drove us apart, and we lost contact with each other for nearly
ten years.
We were both very stubborn.I missed her every single day,but I refused to make the
first move, waiting for her to get in touch with me.I often thought about reaching out to
backdown, yet my pride always stood in my way.
It was Teresa's birthday a month earlier that finally pushed me to take action.I looked
for her on social media and soon recognized her bright broad smile and curly hair.Other
photos revealed that she loved traveling and was blessed with a lovely daughter.Ten years
had treated her gently.
I sent her a sincere message, expressing how much I had missed her over the years.I
mentioned some of our sweet old memories and thanked her for supporting me through hard
times.I invited her to meet for lunch and wished her a happy birthday.
Having received no reply for days,I thought she was unwilling to reconnect. To my
great joy,she finally responded and said she had missed me too.We arranged to meet at a
cafe we used to visit.
On the day of our long-awaited meeting,I arrived at the cafe ahead of time.My heart
was pounding wildly as I scanned the crowd for her familiar face, with a mix of excitement
and nervousness flooding my mind.So anxious was I that I nearly turned and fled several
times. After taking a few deep breaths to calm myself,I brushed off my unease and stepped
inside,my eyes wandering around the familiar cafe.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (满分 15 分)
Possible version (一):
Nowadays, AI is playing an increasingly important role in students' independent learning.
AI brings great convenience to our study. Not only can it help us figure out difficult problems and offer personalized learning plans, but it also provides abundant learning resources, making our study more efficient and flexible.
However, it's vital to use AI properly. On the one hand, we should think independently before turning to it for help. On the other hand, we must avoid depending too much on it or copying answers directly.
In short, AI is a useful tool, and we can benefit a lot from it as long as we use it wisely.
Possible version (二):
Nowadays, AI is being widely used in students’ independent learning.
It serves as a personalized learning assistant, offering instant explanations, tailored practice and round-the-clock support, which greatly boosts the efficiency and flexibility of self-study.
When it comes to its proper use, AI should be treated as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for independent thinking. One may attempt problems on their own first, and only turn to AI for guidance when truly stuck. Over-reliance on it should also be avoided, as critical thinking remains essential for long-term progress.
Used properly, AI can greatly boost learning efficiency and help us develop into truly independent learners.
第二节(满分 25 分)
Possible version
I walked straight to the window seat and sat down. I ordered a cup of coffee, and the familiar smell took me back to the golden days we spent together. I watched the door, nervously expecting Teresa’s arrival. However, after 40 minutes and three cups of coffee, there was still no sign of her. Disappointed and a bit annoyed, I wondered if it was too late to repair our friendship. With my spirits sinking, I stood up and prepared to head off.
Just as I was about to leave, a familiar voice reached my ears. I froze, my heart pounding wildly. Turning around, I saw Teresa, her bright smile and curly hair just as I remembered. She apologized for being delayed by heavy traffic. At that moment, all my unease and pride disappeared. We hugged tightly, and the ten-year separation caused by our silly disagreement seemed to fade away. In that simple moment, I truly understood that true friendship can stand the test of time and that a sincere heart always matters more than pride.

Text 1
W: I wonder what job your younger brother is doing now. I know he used to work for a technology company.
M: He still works as an accountant at that company. (1) He has been interested in money since he was young. I guess he’ll become a banker one day.
Text 2
W: James showed great character finishing that race after falling over like that. Did he pull a muscle?
M: I think so. (2) At first, I thought maybe he was just really tired or that he tripped over something, but then I saw how awkwardly he was running afterwards.
Text 3
W: Check out our donation box in the village hall. We’re trying to raise funds for the children’s playground.
M: I’ll be sure to add to it. I know a lot of people have helped by running marathons and holding coffee mornings. Hopefully, you’ll reach the target soon. (3)
Text 4
M: That’s strange. I received an email saying there’s an extra $1000 in my bank account and asking me to click this link to check it out.
W: Do not click on that link. If you do, you’ll lose your money. I suggest checking your banking app directly. (4)
Text 5
M: I love your hotel so much. The last time I stayed here you put me in the double room along the hall next to the swimming pool.
W: This time you’re on the third floor, but it looks onto the garden, (5) and it has its own bathroom.
Text 6
M: This old house is perfect for this documentary. (6) The architecture is amazing and there is so much space — just think how clever the designers were all those centuries ago. Now, let’s see, have you brought all the equipment in?
W: I think so. We’ve got all the cameras in this bag, the sound equipment in that bag… Ah, the lighting is still in the car.
M: Okay, let me fix the cameras on their stands first, (7) and then you can grab the lighting. While you’re doing that, I’ll find out where the director wants everything to be.
W: Sure, no problem.
Text 7 (第8题为推断题)
M: Hey, Laura. Can I just…? Oh! Sorry.
W: …so don’t wait up. Bye! Paul… Hi! Can I help you?
M: Yeah, I’m just checking the numbers for the office party tonight. Sorry, I didn’t realize you were on the phone. (9)
W: It’s fine! I was just sending my son a voice note to remind him I’ll be home late. There’s no point calling him. He never picks up the phone!
M: My daughter’s the same. She refuses to make phone calls! I don’t get it. I used to chat for hours on the phone with my friends.
W: It’s a generation thing. They’re so used to texting or talking online. My son says, “People only ever call for two reasons…either they’re selling something, or they’re delivering bad news!”
Text 8 (第13题为推断题)
W: I don’t know which of these European cities we should visit. They all seem interesting!
M: Yeah, but Paris got really busy and made me a bit anxious. (10) (11)
W: Exactly! That’s how I felt in London too. (11) The first city I’m considering is Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. It has beautiful buildings, lots of history, and great restaurants. It’s also really close to Austria, so we could have a day trip there too. I really want to go there. But I’ve found another city in Croatia called Zadar, which I also love! (12)
M: Where’s Croatia?
W: It’s across the sea from Italy and it has warm sunny weather. That’s why I might prefer it to Bratislava. It’s on the coast so we could go swimming too. (12) Plus, the surrounding countryside is beautiful.
M: Sounds like you really can’t make up your mind. Let’s go for the one that is cheaper.
W: They’re about the same price! The flights are the same length and cost, and the food, drinks, and hotels have the same prices.
M: Let’s go to both then — Bratislava and Zadar!

M: Once I have done it up, I’ll be able to make it back in 10 years.
W: You really think so?
M: Yes. This old building has hard walls, large windows, and plenty of space. It just needs cleaning up and then I’ll start remodeling.

W: Is that a new idea for apartment buildings?
M: No, I don’t think so. I saw it online a few years ago.
W: Are you going to rent them out?
M: Yes. Once they are done, I’m going to rent them out for $1000 a month.
W: That seems quite high.
M: Not for this area. It’s five minutes’ walk to the nearest subway station and only 30 minutes’ walk to the city center.
W: It sounds like you have really thought this through. (16)
M: Of course.
