The Fahai Temple, located at the southern foot of Cuiwei Mountain in the Shijingshan district of Beijing, houses Ming Dynasty frescoes (壁画) dating back nearly 600 years. Today, a brand-new Fahai Temple Mural Art Center has been built at the foot of the mountain.
“By using digital modern technology, valuable digital resources have been created, allowing the inactive frescoes to come to life,” said Liu Xiaobo, the art center’s curator.
First built in 1439, the Fahai Temple is known as one of the “three major frescoes in China” together with the frescoes found in Dunhuang and Yongle Palace. “The frescoes depict 77 figures, including ordinary people, Buddhas and bodhisattvas, each with different postures and expressions,” said Liu.
With the fall of Ming Dynasty, the prosperity of the Fahai Temple too came to an abrupt end. However, in recent years, the development of a high-tech industry featuring creativity services and digital technology has given the Shijingshan district government more confidence in the digital display of frescoes.
At the exhibition of Fahai Temple Mural Art Center, the original mural paintings are displayed on a 4K HD screen, presenting them at their actual size. Each of the 77 figures is portrayed with thorough attention to detail using 3D modeling at the pixel (像素) level.
The facial details of Water-moon Avalokitesvara, one of the most representative figures on the frescoes of Fahai Temple, are hard to make out in dim conditions. However, after using 3D modeling, the figure’s face, which measures over 3 meters tall, can be seen clearly on the 4K HD screen at the mural hall of the art center.
“Through technological means, we can zoom in on them to show specific details and introduce the content of the frescoes item by item, offering the audience ample time to understand the frescoes,” Liu explained.
4. What can we know about the Fahai Temple frescoes?
A. They were built during the Qing Dynasty. B. They are among China’s three major frescoes.
C. There are altogether 77 Buddhas in the frescoes. D. They remained prosperous in the Ming Dynasty.
5. Why is 3D modeling used for the frescoes?
A. To reduce the actual size of the figures. B. To make the figures move like real ones.
C. To change the facial expressions of the figures. D. To show the details more clearly and completely.
6. What does the underlined word “zoom in on” probably mean?

C
Graphene (石墨烯) is based on carbon and is often described as a wonder material: it’s super strong, super light, and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It’s already widely used and promises to significantly improve consumer electronics in the future. However, producing graphene on a large scale remains difficult and expensive, which has led researchers to explore alternative methods.
Led by a team from the University of New South Wales, the new research shows that the peanut shell has the potential to boost graphene production, and in a way that’s cheaper and more eco-friendly than some traditional graphene making methods. Worldwide peanut production results in more than 10 million tons of waste piling up each year. Key to the process is the natural material called lignin (木质素), which is packed with carbon. It was already known to be present in peanut shells, but the researchers had to figure out the best way to process it.
The researchers first prepared the peanut shells through a controlled heating process to remove unwanted substances. They then applied a technique known as flash heating, which uses electricity to raise the temperature to over 3,000°C within milliseconds. This rapid heating rearranges the structures of peanut shells. “That process is vital to give us the best carbon-rich material to help ensure there are few imperfections in the final graphene and that it is indeed just a single layer,” says Yeoh.
Although the peanut-shell-to-graphene line has been experimented with before, this study highlights how carefully controlling the starting material can significantly improve the resulting graphene quality. That’s not to say the process is perfect yet, though. The resulting graphene material scores highly in terms of quality but is typically composed of a few graphene layers in a disordered way, and the technique could take three to four years to expand for larger use, the researchers note. Work to further refine the process from this lab-based proof of concept will continue, and researchers are now exploring whether similar methods could be applied to other materials such as coffee grounds or banana peels.
8. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To explain how graphene is produced.
B. To compare graphene with other materials.
C. To describe the history of graphene research.
D. To introduce graphene’s function and limitation.
9. What makes peanut shells suitable for graphene production?
A. Their light weight nature. B. Their carbon content.
C. Their health-friendly feature. D. Their large yearly output.
10. What is the function of the flash heating?
A. Structuring. B. Removing. C. Cleaning. D. Packing.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the current research?
A. Uninterested in its practical use.
B. Doubtful about its future value.
C. Positive but aware of its limitations.
D. Completely satisfied with its results.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

The resulting graphene material scores highly in terms of quality but is typically composed of a few graphene layers in a disordered way, and the technique could take three to four years to expand for larger use, the researchers note.(不过,这并不是说这个过程已经完美了。
D
Here on Earth, it might not matter if your wristwatch runs a few seconds slow. But in outer space, critical functions like communication and navigation require even greater clock accuracy down to a billionth of a second — or more. To get the precision needed to fly through the cosmos requires an atomic (原子的) clock.
We are sending more spacecraft further into deep space than ever before. But every one of those spacecraft out there depends on its navigation being performed right here on Earth to tell it where it is and, far more importantly, where it is going. In fact, tracking a spacecraft as it travels through deep space is fundamentally a problem of measuring time. Scientists can’t just pull out a ruler and measure how far away the spacecraft is. But they can measure how long it takes a signal to get there and back again. And the concept is exactly the same as an echo. If people stand in front of a mountain and shout, the longer it takes for them to hear the echo back at them, the further away that mountain is.
Measuring the amount of time it takes for the signal to travel between Earth and a space probe (航天探测器) is absolutely critical for deep space exploration and can be the difference between a successful mission and a failed mission because getting it wrong by just a tiny fraction of a second might mean the difference between the spacecraft’s safely and gently landing on the surface of another planet and creating yet another crater (坑) on that surface. Just a tiny fraction of a second, and it can be the difference between a mission’s life and death.
For this reason, incredibly precise clocks are vital for deep space missions. The only time measuring tool that is equipped for the job is the atomic clock. Not only are they incredibly exact, they are also extraordinarily reliable. And designing and building a precision instrument that can support that is as much art as it is science and engineering.
12. What leads to the need for an atomic clock?
A. The use of atomic energy in navigation.
B. The necessity of instant communication.
C. The functional limitations of a wristwatch.
D. The accurateness of measuring time in space.
13. Why does the author give the echo example?
A. To explain how scientists locate spacecraft.
B. To prove sound travels faster in mountains.
C. To show why shouting is useless in deep space.
D. To compare space navigation with daily activities.
14. What can be concluded about time measurement from paragraph 3?
A. It helps scientists decide what to learn.
B. A slight mistake in it could ruin a mission.
C. A better technology could make it easier.
D. It is used to control the spacecraft’s speed.
15. What will the author probably discuss next?
A. Why other clocks fail in space.
B. When atomic clocks were invented.
C. How atomic clocks are developed.
D. Where atomic clocks are used on Earth.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Animals have always had to adapt. ____16____ The rate of species loss is growing, and it’s estimated to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. The World Wide Fund for Nature revealed a 73% decline in the average size of the wildlife populations monitored between 1970 and 2020. Currently, around a third of amphibian (两栖的) species are at risk of extinction.
Mass extinction events can also cause animals to evolve as the territories they live in change so quickly. Animals must adapt to survive in new environments where previous wildlife has been eliminated. ____17____ Our ancestors evolved three times faster in the 10 million years following the giant species’ extinction compared to the previous 80 million years.
____18____ After all, those adapting well are far more likely to survive. Many animals use hairless parts of their body to help regulate their body temperature. In the case of wood mice, their tails are becoming longer. Similarly, the ears of elephants are growing.
This comes down to simple physical principles: animals can cool off more quickly through larger surface areas. At the same time, animals are becoming smaller, which again helps them to lose heat more quickly because of the greater surface areas to volume. Animals are also becoming lighter in colour. ____19____ Surely, it’s a good thing that animals are adapting? Well, yes and no.
Adaptation to meet one challenge can create new challenges. Birds with larger beaks (喙), for example, may find it more difficult to feed. ____20____ The current situation has scientists concerned about the rate at which this “shapeshifting" is happening.
A. This may lead to unnecessary food waste.
B. Those without this ability have simply been extinct.
C. The realistic question is how far an animal can adapt.
D. Global warming destroys the homes of many animals.
E. Animals change body structures due to climate change.
F. For instance, evolution exploded after dinosaurs died out.
G. That keeps them cooler and better hidden in sunny places.
【答案】16. B 17. F 18. E 19. G 20. C

第二节(满分20分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In social studies class on Monday, Mrs. Petrovski assigned a story-telling project on Thursday: students had to bring a relative to share stories, which would be videotaped. David was excited—his grandmother, Abuela, was good at telling tales. She had the magic to make every story come alive before his eyes.
That afternoon, David rushed home excitedly, telling his grandmother about the project. Her eyes lit up. “I have the perfect story to share,” she assured. The next day, she prepared enthusiastically, shopping for fabrics at Petra’s Fabric Place, where everyone knew her as a skilled tailor. She’d started sewing there after moving in, easing her loneliness. She felt like she knew everyone in class including Mrs. Petrovski well because David talked about them all the time. Therefore, she decided to make hand-sewn gifts tailored for each one. Learning that Mrs. Petrovski’s mother, a Russian living in America for many years, would come as well, she would make a lovely traditional Russian hat for her as a special surprise. In the next two days, she rushed to get things done.
But on Wednesday, David’s excitement faded when classmates shared their relatives’ dramatic stories: Joseph’s grandfather, a retired policeman, had chased a cat that stole a purse; Ramon’s father, a firefighter, had rescued workers from a factory fire; Marisa’s aunt, a vet (兽医), had saved a mistreated dog. Compared to these exciting tales, David worried his grandmother’s story about sewing would seem boring.
He considered pretending to be sick, practicing fake (假的) coughs on his way home. After he tried this excuse at home, he also pointed out that the gifts prepared for the presentation hadn’t been put into the bags yet. Abuela looked thoughtful, telling him how she learnt to sew from her mother during childhood illness. David was speechless. He realized how important sewing was to his grandmother and how she expected to share with others her story about sewing.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150词左右;

Next morning, he accompanied Abuela to the presentation, bags in hand.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 At that moment, he felt ashamed of himself. Immersed in a surge of regret, he hugged Abuela and extended his sincere apology for being silly, adding that her story would definitely be the best. She patted his back softly, her eyes shining like diamonds. Catching sight of the empty bags lying on the table, he offered to help her pack the hand-sewn treasures carefully. As they worked together, he kept imagining how wonderful her sewing story would be, his heart filled with expectation.
Next morning, he accompanied Abuela to the presentation, bags in hand. Eager and curious, the class cheered as each relative shared vivid stories. Soon, it was Abuela’s turn. With a soft smile, she handed out the hand-sewn gifts to their receivers with the assistance of David, and told how sewing, which was learnt during childhood illness, accompanied her through the ups and downs of life. Eyes wide with amazement, everyone admired the gifts, soft murmurs of praise rippling through the room. When she finished, thunderous applause echoed. David felt his chest swell with pride as he saw Abuela’s bright smile, and he knew that her story had touched the class more than any other.
