A credit card is like a “short-term loan (贷款)” from a bank. When you buy something, the bank pays the store on your behalf (代表你) first. Then you should repay (偿还) the bank before a set date, usually once a month. If you do that, you don’t have to pay any extra fees
But credit cards have risks (风险). If you forget to repay on time, the bank will ask you to pay extra money called “interest”. This can make the money you owe (欠) grow quickly. What’s worse, it’ll affect (影响) your credit record. For example, you may find it difficult to borrow money or apply for a credit card in the future. Even when you try to get a loan to buy a house or a car, it could be much harder because your bad credit record shows you might not repay on time. Also, it’s easy to overspend with a credit card because you don’t see cash leaving your hands.
Another risk is that if you lose your card, someone else could use it. You might have to pay the bill if you don’t report the loss immediately.
Credit cards are convenient, but you need to use them carefully—only buy what you really want, and always pay your bill in full and on time.
16. What does the underlined word “that” refer to?
A. Using a credit card to buy something.
B. Paying the store with digital money.
C. Getting a loan to buy a house or a car.
D. Giving money back to the bank by a set date.
17. Which of the following is NOT a risk of credit cards?
A. People can overspend easily.
B. A lost credit card may be used by others.
C. Repaying on time can affect credit record.
D. Interest can make the money you owe grow.
18. Which sentence uses “apply” with the same meaning as the underlined word?
A. He has applied to join the army.
B. She applied some paint to the chair.
C. They applied the new technology to farming.
D. You will pass your exams if you apply yourself.
19. If Xiaoming buys a big toy car with his credit card but doesn’t repay on time, what will happen?
A. He might not buy a car.
B. He will repay more money.
C. Someone else could help him pay back.
D. The bank will be pleased with his behavior.
20. What’s the author’s view on using credit cards?
A. It’s dangerous to keep credit cards.
B. Credit cards are very useful in people’s lives.
C. Only buy things you need and pay back on time.
D. Applying for credit cards from different banks is necessary.
D 17. C 18. A 19. B 20. C
第一段提到“Then you should repay the bank before a set date, usually once a month. If you do that, you don’t have to pay any extra fees”,这里的“that”指代前一句的“在规定日期前向银行还款”,与选项D一致。
原文中“apply for a credit card”的“apply”意为“申请”,选项A“He has applied to join the army”中的“apply”也表示“申请”。
第二段提到“If you forget to repay on time, the bank will ask you to pay extra money called ‘interest’. This can make the money you owe grow quickly.”
最后一段提到“only buy what you really want, and always pay your bill in full and on time”可知,作者对信用卡的观点是只买自己需要的东西,并且全额按时还款,与选项C一致。
C篇
In most languages, people often start small talk after a greeting. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice day, isn’t it?” “Terrible weather, isn’t it?” But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something that both people have the same opinion about. The purpose (目的 ) of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion (宗教) or politics (政治) , so these are not suitable topics for small talk. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “Great game, isn’t it?” At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system: “The bus service is terrible, isn’t it?”
Small talk is an important part of conversation in any language. People in different countries start small talk in different ways. This shows that when we learn a language, we should learn the vocabulary and the grammar as well as the social behavior of the people who speak it.
21. Small talk ________.
A. is a kind of conversation with short words
B. is a greeting when people meet each other
C. is to let people disagree about something
D. is a polite friendly conversation on unimportant topics
22. The favorite topic of small talk is about ________.

C. we should know the culture of the country
D. we should know the importance of the language
24. When we say “Great game, isn’t it?”, we in fact ________.
A. ask a question B. agree with the other
C. greet each other D. start small talk
25. What we learn from the passage is that ________.
A. different languages have different grammars
B. small talk is an important part in a language
C. small talk depends on the purpose of the conversation
D. we can talk about religion and politics in small talk
D 22. A 23. C 24. D 25. B

根据原文第二段最后一句“when we learn a language, we should learn the vocabulary and the grammar as well as the social behavior of the people who speak it”可得出:学习语言需要同时了解对应国家的社会文化,对应C选项。
根据原文第一段“The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: ‘Great game, isn’t it?’”
