Passage 1
I love maths. It has taught me not only how to perform calculations but also how to think critically and solve problems. In real life, it has helped me solve problems more effectively. If I meet a difficult problem, I try to use the skills I have learned, such as breaking down the problems or simplifying it, to find a solution. These strategies often give me a new way to deal with the problem.
But of course, learning maths isn’t a piece of cake. The hardest part for me was combination problems (组合问题). Every problem seems unsolvable and unrelated to maths. I remember there was a graph theory problem (图论问题) and it took me three hours to solve.
Qiu Wenjun, 13, Jiangsu, China
Passage 2
I was interested in studying maths when I entered high school. However, I had a hard time when dealing with difficult math problems. As the problems became more challenging, I felt increasingly distant from maths. I realized that I needed to examine the most basic mathematical concepts to have a deeper understanding of the subject. After improving my basic maths skills, I could try to solve advanced (高等的) problems.
Nowadays, I’m learning probability and statistics. Knowing that maths will be widely used, I have become more active in learning maths.
Jason Lee, 16, South Korea

“That’s not right. But is it OK to point out the mistake? Is that polite, in the first lesson?” Questions jumped into my mind.
“Why aren’t you writing, Wang Han?”
I looked up at Ms Chen. My eyes met hers. My mouth felt dry.
But then I thought about the meaning of the sentence. I put up my hand.
“Ms Chen, there’s a mistake,” I said. “That sentence is from Confucius, not from Mencius.”
“Well done, Wang Han. In fact, this is my first lesson for all of you. You are now in junior high school. Learning will be more difficult. It’s important to think more in your learning. Please always remember this.”
