There were ice dragon boat races at HIT in the past. However, this year, the race was 3 . Besides the three schools, the race also invited some other universities from both China and the UK.
“It is an amazing experience,” said Edward, a student from Cambridge. “The weather is much colder in Harbin. In the UK, the 4 temperature is around –5℃, while here it’s –20℃. It is so freezing that we have to wear very thick clothes to keep warm. However, the local people here treat us with such good 5 . This makes us feel truly welcome.”
Edward added, “We have a 6 of rowing (划船) on the River Cam, but the idea of boating on ice is 7 to us. It is also a big challenge.”
A teacher of HIT said the race was more than a sports match. “Firstly, the race is a ‘bridge’. In different places around the world, the same animal may stand for (代表) quite different meanings. Are you 1 in learning about these differences? Here are two typical 2 .
In almost all English-speaking countries, the lion is 3 seen as “the king of all beasts (野兽)”. It is always connected with those people who are brave (勇敢的), 4 and strong. British people even use the lion as the symbol of their nation. However, in the eyes of Chinese people, the tiger is “the king of all beasts”. So, the tiger carries the 5 meanings of bravery, power and strength in China. When we translate (翻译) the English 6 “play oneself in the lion’s mouth” into Chinese, we use “tiger” — “只身入虎穴”.
As one of the most mysterious (神秘的) birds, the owl normally stands for wisdom in Western countries. Its cleverness has always been 7 Westerners admire (欣赏). For example, they often use “as wise as an owl” in their texts and daily conversations. But in China, hearing the sound of an owl usually 8 that bad things may happen soon. Perhaps some people don’t care too much about this, but the difference does exist (存在).
Animals have important symbolic meanings in different cultures. Learning about these differences can help us avoid some 9 . They can also help us better understand the local culture. Deng Fuxin, from Mianyang, Sichuan province, studied Hindi (印地语) for three years at Communication University of China. She was surprised by the warmth and sense of connection she felt in India when she 1 arrived there last October.
At first, she and her friends felt nervous and 2 because they didn’t know the area well. However, the kindness of the local people quickly made them feel better.
“An old tuk-tuk (突突车) driver couldn’t find the hotel we were looking for, so he drove us around asking for 3 . In the end, he didn’t charge (收取) us much,” she said.
Deng also found that Chinese and Indian 4 share some similarities. Take India’s chai culture as an example. Chai is a tea-like drink mixed with spices. “It’s 5 to see people here drinking several cups a day, and people in Sichuan love gathering in tea houses,” Deng explained.
One of the things that 6 Deng the most was how well young people in India understand China.
“Many of my Indian classmates can clearly name several of China’s cities and 7 . They also follow Chinese films and games,” she explained. For example, one Indian student’s paper was about the 8 Chinese game: Black Myth: Wukong.
Deng believed that the 9 of young people in both countries is the key to breaking down barriers (障碍).
“The young people I met from both countries all treat one another very 10 . We are breaking down information barriers, which shows the possibilities of people-to-people exchanges (交流),” she added.

British people often feel 1 about replying to offers with the word “no”. It feels impolite, especially when speaking to strangers. This can be very 2 for people from other countries, especially if they are not fluent (流利的) English speakers.
The first things you learn when you start studying English is how to answer if somebody offers you something. “Yes, please.” and “No, thank you.” are probably the best-known 3 in the language. Yet British people often say, “I’m all right, thanks.” when you offer them something. When they say this, they mean that they have already got everything that they need and don’t need 4 else. This is a way to say no without being 5 . However, British people often say “All right.” when they agree to an offer. The same words can be used in different ways to say both yes and no, and sometimes differences in pronunciation are the only clues (线索) for 6 it.
Tom is an assistant in a shop selling gifts and tours to tourists. “It’s much 7 to understand what British customers want,” he says. “I ask them 8 they want to buy something and they tell me that they are all right. Often when I ask if they want to go on a tour, they say, ‘Maybe later’, but really they don’t want it and probably never come back to the shop.”
“Even when they want to say yes, it’s confusing,” says Tom. “They sometimes say ‘Sure.’ or ‘Why not?’ 9 . I may understand what they mean 10 . Why can’t British people just say it directly? It’s confusing!”

When you go to a dinner party, it is 4 to bring a small gift. This is a nice 5 to thank the host. The gift doesn’t need to be expensive. Flowers or a bottle of wine are good choices.

Sometimes, you get an expensive gift and feel 8 about what to give back. But remember, whether you give a gift back, and what you give, is your choice. You don’t have to give a gift just because you receive one.
