Plastic Pollution: A Global Crisis
Every year, 11 million tons of plastic waste enter the ocean. That’s equivalent to dumping a garbage truck full of plastic into the ocean every minute.
Plastic never truly goes away. Instead, it breaks down into tiny pieces called microplastics. These microplastics have been found in the deepest parts of the ocean, in Arctic ice, in drinking water, and even in human blood.
The problem is getting worse. Plastic production is expected to double by 2040. “We are producing more plastic than we can manage,” says environmental scientist Dr. Kim. “Without action, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.”
What can be done? Some countries have banned single-use plastic bags and straws. Others are investing in recycling technology. But individuals can help too: bring reusable bags, avoid plastic packaging, and recycle properly.
8. How much plastic waste enters the ocean each year?
A. 1 million tons. B. 11 million tons.
C. 40 million tons. D. 2040 million tons.
9. What are microplastics?
A. A new type of plastic.
B. Plastic that disappears.
C. Small pieces of broken plastic.
D. Plastic found only in fish.
10. Where have microplastics NOT been found?
A. In Arctic ice. B. In drinking water.
C. In human blood. D. In outer space.
11. What is predicted to happen by 2050?
A. Plastic will disappear.
B. More fish than plastic in the ocean.
C. More plastic than fish in the ocean.
D. Plastic production will stop.
B 9. C 10. D 11. C

根据第三段“Without action, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.(如果不采取行动,到2050年,海洋里的塑料将比鱼还多。)”
D
The Science of Habits
Why is it so hard to break bad habits and form good ones? The answer lies in how our brains work.
When you do something repeatedly, your brain creates a “habit loop”: a cue triggers a behavior, which leads to a reward. Over time, this loop becomes automatic. That’s why you bite your nails without thinking or reach for your phone as soon as you wake up.
To break a bad habit, you need to change the loop. Keep the same cue and reward, but change the behavior. For example, if you eat cookies when stressed (cue: stress, behavior: eat cookies, reward: feeling better), try replacing cookies with a walk or deep breathing.
To form a new habit, make it easy. Want to floss? Keep floss next to your toothbrush. Want to read more? Put a book on your pillow. Small changes make big differences.
12. What is a “habit loop”?
A. A circle of friends.
B. A cycle of cue, behavior, and reward.
C. A type of brain disease.
D. A method of breaking habits.
13. Why do we bite nails without thinking?
A. Because it feels good.
B. Because the habit has become automatic.
C. Because we are hungry.
D. Because our brain is broken.
14. How can you break a bad habit according to the text?
A. Remove the reward.
B. Remove the cue.
C. Change the behavior but keep cue and reward.
D. Stop all habits at once.
15. What does the text suggest for forming a new habit?
A. Make it difficult to build willpower.
B. Wait for motivation.
C. Make it easy to do.
D. Do it only once a week.
B 13. B 14. C 15. C
根据第二段中“When you do something repeatedly, your brain creates a “habit loop”: a cue triggers a behavior, which leads to a reward. (当你重复做某事时,你的大脑会创建一个“习惯回路”:一个提示触发一个行为,该行为导致一个奖励)”可知,“习惯回路”是一个由提示、行为和奖励组成的循环。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Over time, this loop becomes automatic. That’s why you bite your nails without thinking... (随着时间的推移,这个回路变得自动化。这就是为什么你会不假思索地咬指甲……)”可知,我们不假思索地咬指甲是因为这个习惯已经变得自动化了。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“To break a bad habit, you need to change the loop. Keep the same cue and reward, but change the behavior. (要改掉一个坏习惯,你需要改变这个回路。保持相同的提示和奖励,但改变行为)”可知,改掉坏习惯的方法是保持提示和奖励不变,改变行为。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“To form a new habit, make it easy. Want to floss? Keep floss next to your toothbrush. Want to read more? Put a book on your pillow. (要养成一个新习惯,就要让它变得容易。想要用牙线吗?把牙线放在牙刷旁边。想读更多吗?把一本书放在枕头上)”可知,要养成新习惯,文章建议让新习惯变得容易做。
