The Problem with Plastic
Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean. That’s equivalent to dumping one garbage truck of plastic into the ocean every minute.
Plastic does not biodegrade — it breaks into smaller pieces called microplastics. These microplastics have been found everywhere: in Arctic ice, in drinking water, in the fish we eat, and even in human blood.
“We are living in a plastic world,” says Dr. Lisa Chen, an environmental scientist. “Plastic is convenient, but the cost to our planet and our health is enormous.”
What can we do? Refusing single-use plastics is the most effective step. Bring your own bag, bottle, and coffee cup. Choose products with less packaging. And always recycle properly.
“Individual actions matter,” Chen says. “But we also need governments and companies to take responsibility.”
28.How much plastic enters the ocean each year?

A.Stop using all plastic. B.Refuse single-use plastics.

Why We Sleep
We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping. But why? Scientists have discovered that sleep is not just rest — it’s when the brain does some of its most important work.
During sleep, the brain clears out waste products that build up during the day. Think of it as a dishwasher for your brain. Without enough sleep, these toxins remain, potentially increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Sleep also strengthens memory. While you sleep, the brain replays the day’s events, moving important information from short-term to long-term memory. Students who get a good night’s sleep after studying remember more than those who stay up late.
Yet one in three adults don’t get enough sleep. “We’ve made sleep a luxury,” says Dr. Wang. “But it’s as essential as food and water.”
32.What does the brain do during sleep?
A.Only rests. B.Clears waste and strengthens memory.
C.Stops working completely. D.Creates new problems.
33.The “dishwasher for your brain” refers to ______.
A.a kitchen appliance B.the process of clearing waste during sleep
C.a new medical device D.the habit of washing dishes
34.What happens when students get enough sleep after studying?
A.They forget everything. B.They remember more.
C.They become less focused. D.They need more sleep.
35.What is Dr. Wang’s view on sleep?
A.Sleep is a luxury. B.Sleep is as essential as food and water.
C.People can live without much sleep. D.Only children need enough sleep.
