Most people celebrate their birthdays with cakes and candles. Betty Kellenberger from Michigan, the US, celebrated hers by making history. At the age of 80, she became the oldest woman to hike the whole Appalachian Trail (阿巴拉契亚小径) — an amazing 2,200-mile hike. Going up and down the trail is like climbing Mount Qomolangma 16 times.
Kellenberger grew up on a farm. For many years, she dreamt of hiking the trail, but she never had the time for the six-month journey. Finally, she decided to start her journey in 2024.
The journey was not easy. Along the way, Kellenberger faced many obstacles. She even had to stop halfway because of a strong storm. Determined to finish, she changed her plan and kept moving north in the spring of 2025.
Before Kellenberger, Linda Vanderloop was the oldest woman to finish the hike at the age of 74. Kellenberger created a new record. But for Kellenberger, this was never about titles. “You hike alone, and you have time to think and enjoy the beautiful scenery,” she said. “________ These include the drivers, the hikers you share the trail with, and ... It’s all about the experiences along the way.”

Do you wonder how smart your pet cat is, especially when it comes to remembering things? A study gives us some surprising answers. Cats are not just clean and good at climbing — they are smart little animals with great memories!
Scientists wanted to know how well cats can remember things, so they did an experiment (实验) with 50 friendly house cats. These cats were of different ages, from cute baby cats to calm old cats, and they all loved tasty food.
In the experiment, the scientists put four bowls of the same type in a quiet room. Two bowls were full of the cats’ favorite snacks, and the other two were empty. Then the scientists let the cats into the room to eat. After they finished eating, the scientists took them out. Fifteen minutes later, the scientists changed all the bowls to clean, empty ones. Then the cats went back to the room to look for food. What happened next? The cats spent much more time around the bowls that had food before! They smelt the bowls with their little noses and touched them with their paws (爪子).
This tells us cats can remember “what” and “where”. They seem to have good short-term memories. Another study in 2006, however, showed something quite different. Scientists tested (测试) cats’ ability to find hidden (隐藏) things. Most of the cats couldn’t find them after 30 seconds.
The study opens the door to new studies on how long cats’ memories can be. Professor (教授) Lauri from Yale University said, “We will keep studying how long cats’ memories last and if they remember many small things in life like humans do.”

14. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

文章第一段第一句提到:“Do you wonder how smart your pet cat is, especially when it comes to remembering things?”。
文章第二段指出实验对象的特征:“…did an experiment with 50 friendly house cats…and they all loved tasty food.”。

Writing tools are important things in our lives. Humans first used brushes for writing, and then reeds (芦苇) and feathers. In 1884, people created fountain pens ____16____ One big problem was that the ink often came out of the pen and made a mess. Writing with them was hard work.
In 1938, a Hungarian reporter named Ladislao Biro created the first ballpoint pen (圆珠笔). Biro noticed that newspaper ink dried fast and didn’t leave dirty marks on paper. ____17____ But that thick (黏稠的) ink couldn’t go through a normal pen tip. So, he tried something different.
Biro put a small ball at the tip of the pen. ____18____ When people wrote with the pen, the ball rolled and carried ink onto the paper. When people stopped writing, the thick ink stayed inside and did not come out of the pen.
____19____ They help people write fast. And they won’t make a mess, even if water gets on the paper.
____20____ You will find the small ball that does all the work.

A. He wanted to make a pen using this kind of ink.
B. Today, many people use ballpoint pens every day.
C. The next time you pick up a ballpoint pen, look at the tip.

A选项“He wanted to make a pen using this kind of ink.”
