In the heart of the segregated (种族隔离的) American South, a young boy looked at his world and refused to accept what he saw. His name was Jesse Jackson, and he grew up to become one of the most inspiring voices for justice and dignity.
Jackson was born poor in South Carolina in 1941. In those days, the color of his skin determined where he could sit, where he could study, and even whether he could walk through a front door. But young Jesse carried within him a fire that no rule could put out. He believed deeply that every person, regardless of background, has worth.
That belief became his life’s mission. As a young man, he worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., learning from the great leader until King’s tragic death in 1968. Standing in the shadow of that loss, Jackson chose not to step back but to step forward. He set up organizations that fought for economic opportunity and equal treatment, carrying the torch when others thought it had fallen.
Perhaps Jackson’s greatest gift was his ability to speak hope into people’s hearts. In schools, in churches, in poor neighborhoods, he would ask children to stand and repeat after him, “I am Somebody. I may be poor, but I am Somebody. I may be young, but I am Somebody.” His voice was like thunder, but his message was simple: your circumstances do not define your worth.
Jackson twice ran for president — not to win, but to show that a Black man could stand on that stage and be heard. Though he did not reach the White House, he opened doors for generations to come.
When he passed away on February 17, 2026 at age 84, the world remembered not just what he did, but who he was: a man who refused to let anyone tell him — or anyone else — that they did not matter. Jesse Jackson spent his life proving that one person’s voice, when rooted in courage and love, can help change the world.
4. What did young Jesse Jackson refuse to accept?
A. The value of hard work. B. The rules of his school.
C. Racial inequality around him. D. His family’s poor condition.
5. What does the underlined phrase “carrying the torch” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Holding a running race. B. Continuing a great effort.
C. Lighting a fire in the dark. D. Starting a new organization.
6. Why did Jackson run for president twice?
A. To win the final election. B. To gain rights for his people.
C. To seek fame and wealth. D. To take over King’s position.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. A great fighter’s life and spirit.
B. A way to win equal chances.
C. A famous leader’s political success.
D. A story of anti-segregation movements.
C 5. B 6. B 7. A

以及第二段“In those days, the color of his skin determined where he could sit, where he could study, and even whether he could walk through a front door. But young Jesse carried within him a fire that no rule could put out. He believed deeply that every person, regardless of background, has worth.
根据第三段“As a young man, he worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., learning from the great leader until King’s tragic death in 1968. Standing in the shadow of that loss, Jackson chose not to step back but to step forward. He set up organizations that fought for economic opportunity and equal treatment, … when others thought it had fallen. (年轻时,他与小马丁·路德·金博士并肩工作,向这位伟大的领袖学习,直到金博士于1968年不幸去世。站在失去金博士的阴影下,杰克逊选择不退缩,而是前进。他成立了为争取经济机会和平等待遇而战的组织,在别人以为这份使命已被中断时,他……。)”可知,杰克逊在金博士去世后,没有退缩,而是继续为争取经济机会和平等待遇而努力,所以“carrying the torch”意思是“继续伟大的努力”。

Jesse Jackson spent his life proving that one person’s voice, when rooted in courage and love, can help change the world.
C
In childhood we’re told not to talk to strangers. But now we’ve grown up, and it’s time to forget that, because having a chat with someone we don’t know could change our whole day.
Gillian Sandstrom, a lecturer in psychology, would often talk with a woman working on a hot dog stand. “I started nodding and smiling at the lady. When she replied, the small connection made me feel seen, safe and part of the community,” says Sandstrom. This positive connection led her to study the effect of simple social communication. She found that people were about 17 percent happier on the days when they started a chat over a coffee machine,or said hi to a neighbour. “My work clearly shows that talking to strangers makes you more positive,” she says. “It also encourages you to trust other people more, which makes the world friendlier and safer.”
The reason is simple. We want to connect with others. The more people we do this with, the happier we are. In fact, according to a study from Harvard Business School, people who talk within more different relationship levels, including friends, family members, co-workers and strangers, are happier than those with a less broad mix of communication.
The problem is that many of us find the idea of beginning a conversation with strangers a bit frightening. Humans are naturally afraid of being refused. As a result, even though we can sense deep down that nothing too bad could happen if we start a conversation with a stranger, a part of us is afraid of getting hurt doing it.
The good news is that what we fear most rarely happens. In Dr Sandstrom’s work, she found that only ten percent of contact received no answers. The more often we speak to people, the easier it becomes, “Doing it time and time again was the key,” says Dr Sandstrom. “The more people talked to strangers, the less worried they felt about being refused and more confident they became in their ability to start and continue a:conversation.”
8. What drove Sandstrom to start her study?
A. Her personal experience.
B. Her childhood memories.
C. Her interest in social study.
D. Her chats with co-workers.
9. What does the study from Harvard Business School suggest people do?
A. Talk more with friends.
B. Group different people.
C. Enlarge their social circle.
D. Select their favorite partners.
10. Why are many people unwilling to talk with strangers?
A. They fear getting physically injured.
B. They are not used to making friends.
C. They have no idea how to start a talk.
D. They worry about being turned down.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Skills necessary for social life
B. Tips on leaving comfort zones
C. The key to building connections
D. The power of talking to strangers
A 9. C 10. D 11. D

根据最后一段中“The more people talked to strangers, the less worried they felt about being refused and more confident they became in their ability to start and continue a:conversation(人们与陌生人交谈的次数越多,他们对被拒绝的担心就越少,并且对自己开始和继续对话的能力越有信心)”可知,很多人不愿意和陌生人说话是因为他们担心被拒绝。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“In childhood we’re told not to talk to strangers. But now we’ve grown up, and it’s time to forget that, because having a chat with someone we don’t know could change our whole day.(小时候我们就被告知不要和陌生人说话。但现在我们已经长大了,是时候忘记这一点了,因为与我们不认识的人聊天可能会改变我们的一整天。)”可知,文章主要介绍了与陌生人交谈会对我们产生积极的影响,即可能会改变我们的一整天,D项“与陌生人交谈的力量”适合作文章标题,故选D。

Rice’s whales are among the world’s rarest sea mammals, with only about 50 surviving off Florida. How did scientists miss them - and how can we save them now?
It’s not often that scientists discover a new species of mammal, let alone one that reaches 40 feet in length, weighs up to 30 tons, and often appears near coastal areas where many people live. But that’s what happened in 2021 when scientists announced a new species: Rice’s whale, wrongly thought to be a subspecies (亚种) of Bryde’s whale in the past.
The exciting news was accompanied by a much sadder announcement, however: the filter-feeding (滤食性) whales, often called the Gulf of Mexico whale because of their home base just south of the Florida coastal area, are endangered. Only 51 whales remain, according to researchers’ best estimates.
With their main habitat in the middle of a busy ship route, Rice’s whales face constant danger from ship crashes, military training activities, oil and gas digging, and pollution. The Gulf oil spill in 2010 polluted almost half of the whales’ habitat, killed an estimated 17 percent of the remaining population, sickened another 18 percent, and left almost a quarter of females with reproductive (繁殖) problems.
With the clock ticking, scientists have launched a series of research projects to study the species more closely. For example, a recent study, published in January, used the whales’ unique calls to track their movements, finding that the whales travel outside their main range, as far west as the coast of Texas. “It was exciting to discover that they still regularly occur in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico,” says study leader Melissa Soldevilla, a biologist for NOAA. “Historic records suggest that they once lived across more of the Gulf, but no whales had been seen beyond the main habitat since the 1990s.”
Tracking the whales’ locations is necessary to decide their critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act. “Once we understand where and when the whales occur, we can determine where they share space with human activities that may harm them,” Soldevilla says. “This helps us identify and develop management and protection actions to reduce the threat and improve their chances of survival.”
12. What do we learn about the discovery of Rice’s whale?
A. The species was originally found in the Atlantic Ocean.
B. It used to be mistaken for a subspecies of Bryde’s whale.
C. Its population was stable before being listed as endangered.
D. Scientists previously ignored its existence due to its small size
13. How did the 2010 Gulf oil spill affect Rice’s whale?
A. It made ship strikes on whales more frequent. B. It increased military training in their habitat.
C. It resulted in trouble with male wale growth. D. It caused about 17%to die and made 18%sick.
14. What does Melissa say about Rice’s whales?
A. Their movements are protected by scientists. B. They find new homes out of Mexico Gulf.
C. Their range is showing signs of expansion. D. They always stay in a small area of the Gulf.
15. What is the purpose of tracking Rice’s whales’ locations?
A. To keep records for biological research. B. To analyze their underwater activities.
C. To count their total population numbers. D. To map their habitats needing protection
B 13. D 14. C 15. D

Once a man named Bryan Anderson was driving down a deserted road in the dim evening light when he spotted an elderly lady stuck by the roadside. For hours, no one had stopped to help her, so when Bryan came near with a smile, she grew nervous, thinking the simply-dressed man might try to hurt her.
Seeing her fear, Bryan slowed down and spoke gently, telling her his name and explaining he meant no harm. Unwillingly, the lady said her car had a flat tire and she had no idea how to repair it. Bryan suggested she wait in his warm car to keep away from the cold while he changed the tire. He got his toolbox and worked quickly, finishing the job in minutes.
As he closed the trunk (后备箱), the lady thanked him sincerely, explaining she was from a distant city and just passing through. She then asked how much she should pay for his timely help. Bryan refused the offer with a smile, saying he was only doing what any decent person would do. Instead of taking money, he told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, she should help someone in need the next time she got a chance, and see that small act of kindness as payment for his help.
On her way to her destination, the lady saw a small cafe and stopped for a meal before the last part of her journey. After she sat down, a young waitress with a big smile came over, giving her a clean towel to wipe her wet hair made damp by the evening light rain. The lady soon noticed the waitress was heavily pregnant (怀孕的) yet still kept busy serving customers with patience.
“Why are you still working so hard in the later stage of your pregnancy?” the old lady asked.
“This is life,” the waitress sighed (叹息), “my husband and I were in desperate need of money. It will be tough for us financially with the baby coming very soon.”

The sight made the old lady think of Bryan’s kindness, and she decided to pass it on.

The sight made the old lady think of Bryan's kindness, and she decided to pass it on. After finishing her delicious meal, she pulled out a large handful of cash to pay the $20 bill. When the waitress came back with the change, the old lady had already left quietly, leaving a short note on the table. The note read: "Someone once helped me out the way I'm helping you. Keep passing the kindness on.” Shocked and moved by the generosity, the waitress thought of how tight their life was and how nervous they both were about the coming baby. She walked home slowly that night, holding the note tightly in her hand, and she couldn't wait to tell her husband that everything was going to be okay — her husband, just by chance, was Bryan Anderson.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 100 左右;
The sight made the old lady think of Bryan’s kindness, and she decided to pass it on.
