La Tomatina, Spain Once a year, in the Valencia town of Buñol, the Spanish gather to throw tomatoes at each other. The world’s largest tomato fight, La Tomatina, now attracts many participants from around the world. Battaglia delle Arance, Italy If you don’t fancy throwing tomatoes, how about oranges? During the Carnevale di Ivrea each year, residents of Ivrea, Italy come together to throw oranges at each other. The tradition is in memory of a battle between the locals and a bad ruler, with oranges thrown as part of the fight for freedom. La Mordida, Mexico If you like to take small bites of your birthday cake, it might be best not to spend your birthday in Mexico. After singing Happy Birthday, guests watch while the birthday boy or girl blows out his/ her candles. He/ She then leans over and takes a bite of the cake, at which point someone will push his/ her face into it. Baking Money into Food, Bolivia Speaking of food, did you know that, in Bolivia, it is traditional to bake money into sweet cakes on New Year’s Eve? It’s a tradition in which bakeries across the country take part. Those who find a coin in their cakes can look forward to plenty of good luck in the new year. 1. What is Battaglia delle Arance in honour of? A. A fight with foreign enemies. B. A battle for freedom. C. The harvest of oranges in Ivrea. D. The hard-working residents. 2. Which of the following best describes the moment of “La Mordida”? A. The second the candles are blown out. B. The time when guests sing the birthday song. C. The point at which the cake is cut into pieces. D. The instant the birthday person is pushed into the cake. 3. What do the four traditions have in common? A. They are related to food. B. They focus on human rights. C. They are traditions in Europe. D. They are traditions about dance. B 2. D 3. 根据Battaglia delle Arance, Italy部分中“The tradition is in memory of a battle between the locals and a bad ruler, with oranges thrown as part of the fight for freedom.(这个传统是为了纪念当地人与一个坏统治者之间的战斗,扔橙子是争取自由斗争的一部分。)” 根据La Mordida, Mexico部分中“If you like to take small bites of your birthday cake, it might be best not to spend your birthday in Mexico. After singing Happy Birthday, guests watch while the birthday boy or girl blows out his/ her candles. He/ She then leans over and takes a bite of the cake, at which point someone will push his/ her face into it.(如果你过生日时习惯小口吃蛋糕,那最好别在墨西哥过生日。唱完生日快乐歌后,客人们看着过生日的男孩或女孩吹灭蜡烛。然后他/她俯下身咬一口蛋糕,这时有人会把他的/她的脸推进蛋糕里。)”可知,“La Mordida”的时刻是过生日的人被推进蛋糕里的瞬间。故选D。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据La Tomatina, Spain部分中“Once a year, in the Valencia town of Buñol, the Spanish gather to throw tomatoes at each other.(每年一次,在瓦伦西亚的布尼奥尔镇,西班牙人聚在一起互相扔西红柿。)”、Battaglia delle Arance, Italy部分中“During the Carnevale di Ivrea each year, residents of Ivrea, Italy come together to throw oranges at each other.(每年在伊夫雷亚狂欢节期间,意大利伊夫雷亚的居民聚在一起互相扔橙子。)”、La Mordida, Mexico部分中“After singing Happy Birthday, guests watch while the birthday boy or girl blows out his/ her candles. He/ She then leans over and takes a bite of the cake, at which point someone will push his/ her face into it.(唱完生日快乐歌后,客人们看着过生日的男孩或女孩吹灭蜡烛。然后他/她俯下身咬一口蛋糕,这时有人会把他的/她的脸推进蛋糕里。)”以及Baking Money into Food, Bolivia部分中“Speaking of food, did you know that, in Bolivia, it is traditional to bake money into sweet cakes on New Year’s Eve?(说到食物,你知道吗,在玻利维亚,除夕夜把钱烤进甜蛋糕里是一种传统?)” A。 B In a quiet corner of Montreal, Canada, 72-year-old Elaine McBride has spent the past decade breathing new life into abandoned books. Her small basement workshop, lined with shelves of torn classics and water-stained novels, is a haven for literature that others regarded beyond repair. “Every book has a story worth preserving,” she says, her fingers brushing the worn cover of a 1940s edition of Pride and Prejudice. McBride’s mission began accidentally. After retiring from her job as a librarian, she came across a pile of damaged books destined (注定的) for landfill. Horrified by the waste, she taught herself bookbinding (装订) and restoration techniques through online tutorials and old craft manuals. “I started with glue and patience,” she laughs. Now, her tools include specialized paperweights, acid-free glue, and an old printing machine passed down from her grandfather. Over the years, McBride has restored over 2,000 books, donating most to community centers, schools, and prisons. One of her most memorable projects was reviving a fire-damaged copy of The Little Prince for a local children’s hospital. “The child who received it traced the charred (烧焦的) pages and said, ‘Now it’s like me — burned but still loved,’” she recalls. Her work has also inspired a group of teenagers from a nearby high school to join her, learning the art of restoration while listening to her stories of literary history. McBride’s efforts highlight a quiet revolution in a digital age: the belief that physical books hold irreplaceable value. “In a world of screens, these pages are tangible memories,” she says. Though her hands now ache after long hours, she shows no sign of slowing down. “Each book I save is a promise that stories outlive their shelves.” 4. What inspired Elaine McBride to start restoring books? A. A desire to teach others craft skills. B. Her grandpa’s old bookbinding tools. C. The sight of books being thrown away. D. A childhood love for classic literature. 5. Why does the author mention the fire damaged The Little Prince? A. To illustrate McBride’s technical skills. B. To stress the emotional impact of her work. C. To show the popularity of children’s books. D. To compare different restoration challenges. 6. What can be inferred from the words of McBride in paragraph 4? A. Damaged books can hardly carry any stories. B. Stories need new bookshelves to stay popular. C. McBride promises to keep worn books restored. D. Physical books can go beyond the physical form. 7. Which words best describe Elaine McBride? A. Brave and responsible. B. Creative and cooperative. C. Patient and generous. D. Ambitious and decisive. C 5. B 6. D 7. 根据第二段中“After retiring from her job as a librarian, she came across a pile of damaged books destined (注定的) for landfill. Horrified by the waste, she taught herself bookbinding (装订) and restoration techniques through online tutorials and old craft manuals.(在从图书管理员的工作退休后,她偶然遇到一堆注定要被填埋的破损书籍。对这种浪费感到震惊,她通过在线教程和古老的工艺手册自学了装订和修复技术)”可知,是看到书籍被丢弃的场景激发了她开始修复书籍。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“One of her most memorable projects was reviving a fire-damaged copy of The Little Prince for a local children’s hospital. “The child who received it traced the charred (烧焦的) pages and said, ‘Now it’s like me — burned but still loved,’” she recalls.(她最难忘的项目之一是为当地一家儿童医院修复一本被火烧过的《小王子》。“收到书的那个孩子抚摸着烧焦的书页说:‘现在它就像我——被烧毁了但仍然被爱着,’”她回忆道)”可知,作者提到这本书是为了强调她的修复工作带来的情感共鸣和温暖影响。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“McBride’s efforts highlight a quiet revolution in a digital age: the belief that physical books hold irreplaceable value.“In a world of screens, these pages are tangible memories,” she says. Though her hands now ache after long hours, she shows no sign of slowing down. “Each book I save is a promise that stories outlive their shelves.”(McBride的努力突显了数字时代的一场静悄悄的革命:坚信实体书拥有不可替代的价值。“在一个屏幕的世界里,这些书页是有形的记忆,”她说。尽管长时间工作后她的手会疼痛,但她没有表现出放缓的迹象。“我拯救的每一本书都是一个承诺,故事的生命力比书架更长久。”)”可知,她认为实体书承载的故事和精神可以超越物理形式的限制。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“I started with glue and patience(我从胶水和耐心开始)”可知,她非常耐心(Patient);根据第三段中“Over the years, McBride has restored over 2,000 books, donating most to community centers, schools, and prisons.(多年来,McBride修复了2000多本书,并将大部分捐赠给了社区中心、学校和监狱)”可知,她非常慷慨(Generous)。 C Rejection (拒绝) hurts. Whether in a professional, social or romantic setting, there’s a particularly sharp pain to the discovery that one has been judged undesirable in some way. If you’ve ever experienced real rejection — and that’d be most of us — it may stand out in your mind long. The late scientist Helen Fisher, who studied human behavior, showed that rejection and physical injury have much in common. She said MRI scans of participants’ brains revealed areas linked to suffering and physical pain were more active. Time did reduce the pain response for Fisher’s participants, but for some people rejection can last for months or years. Social psychologist Naomi Eisenberger did similar experiments too. Why does rejection hit so hard? The thought of being socially excluded brings a sudden cold feeling. It is similar to being kicked out of an old campsite and left helpless against wild animals. To be cast out from the warmth of the shared fire could have meant death for our ancient ancestors — so it was something to be avoided at all costs. While the rejected of modern Britain won’t usually have to contend with the dangers that socially isolated people of 30,000 years ago faced, the urge to seek shelter in the company of others is strong and lasting. For 21st-century people, though, shying away from rejection may do more harm than good. In fact, strong negative emotional reactions to rejection often cause more damage than the rejection itself. To live satisfying lives and know what we enjoy and are good at, we must be prepared to try things — and to fail at them. If you focus on avoiding rejection, you’ll become more unwilling to take risks, with a much narrower social world. What if, rather than hiding from rejection, we attempted to accept it? What if instead of being knocked back by the wave, we tried to ride it? Not only is it possible to overcome the fear of rejection, but doing so can bring about unexpected positive results. 8. How does the author introduce the issue in the second paragraph? A. By giving a definition. B. By presenting related studies. C. By doing experiments. D. By making a comparison. 9. What does the underlined phrase “contend with” mean in paragraph 3? A. Avoid. B. Report. C. Handle. D. Question. 10. What effect does the fear of rejection have? A. Limiting our social circle eventually. B. Running away from our comfort zone. C. Spreading negative emotions to others. D. Remembering the damage already done. 11. What will the author continue to discuss? A. The benefits of accepting rejection. B. The ways of overcoming fear. C. The results of scanning human brains. D. The chances of facing rejection. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段“The late scientist Helen Fisher, who studied human behavior, showed that rejection and physical injury have much in common. (已故科学家海伦·费舍尔研究人类行为,发现被拒绝和身体受伤有很多共同之处。)”以及“Social psychologist Naomi Eisenberger did similar experiments too. (社会心理学家娜奥米·艾森伯格也做了类似的实验。)”可知,作者通过引用相关研究呈现问题。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“While the rejected of modern Britain won’t usually have to contend with the dangers that socially isolated people of 30,000 years ago faced, the urge to seek shelter in the company of others is strong and lasting. (虽然现代英国被拒绝的人通常不必contend with三万年前被社会排斥者所面临的危险,但在他人陪伴中寻求庇护的渴望强烈而持久。)”可知,句子将现代人与远古祖先对比,远古被排斥者要面对生存危险,现代人无需面对、处理这类危险,由此可推知contend with意为“应对、处理”。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“If you focus on avoiding rejection, you’ll become more unwilling to take risks, with a much narrower social world. (如果你总是担心遭到拒绝,那么你就会变得越来越不愿意去冒险,而且你的社交圈子也会变得非常狭小。)”可知,害怕被拒绝最终会限制我们的社交圈。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Not only is it possible to overcome the fear of rejection, but doing so can bring about unexpected positive results. (克服对被拒绝的恐惧不仅是可能的,而且这样做还能带来意想不到的积极结果。)”可知,作者指出克服被拒绝的恐惧不仅能实现,还能带来意想不到的积极结果,根据行文逻辑可推知,文章接下来最有可能继续讨论接受被拒绝所带来的具体好处。 D Batteries are getting smaller, lighter and more powerful all the time. A group at the University of Cambridge has used the eel’s (鳗鱼的) way to come up with what it calls “jelly batteries”. These are made from hydrogels (水凝胶) containing over 60% water. This makes them both soft and flexible. While most batteries experience a loss of electricity if they are bent or stretched, a jelly battery can be stretched up to one-and-a-half times its length with no electricity loss. This means it can be worn more comfortably against the skin and prove stronger when implanted into internal organs, like the lung, heart or brain. The jelly battery works in much the same way that biological processes, such as the nervous system, produce electricity. They rely on the different concentrations of electrically charged particles (粒子) that exist within different body cells. This creates a difference in electrical potential, which in turn produces a tiny amount of electricity. Electric eels strengthen it by having thousands of muscle cells acting together to produce power strong enough to hunt. Much as an electric eel can increase small electrical with the help of muscle cells, jelly batteries can increase their output by being tied together. They can also be charged and discharged by connecting a power source. The group thinks jelly batteries could be marketed without great difficulty, and that the cost of making them would be reasonable when compared with present battery technologies. The next step for the Cambridge team is to test the biological safety of their jelly batteries when implanted in human body: although, as they are mainly water-based, the team does not expect any rejection problems. Besides wearable and implantable devices, another potential market for stretchable batteries is soft robotics where stretchy parts would be safer to operate among people than traditional robots. They could help power other devices, such as gloves that allow disabled people to move their hands. 12. What makes a jelly battery soft and flexible? A. Its size. B. Its length. C. Its material. D. Its shape. 13. How can jelly batteries raise their electricity output? A. By relying on energy sources to get charged. B. By creating a difference in electrical potential. C. By gathering plenty of cells to work as a team. D. By joining themselves together to increase power. 14. What can we learn about jelly batteries from the last paragraph? A. Their business use is around the corner. B. Their biological application is promising. C. Their production cost is greatly reduced. D. Their potential in robotics is beyond limit. 15. What is a suitable title for the text? A. Jelly batteries: A Nature’s Solution B. Soft batteries: Huge Market Demand C. Soft batteries: Safe for Human Body D. Jelly batteries: A Stretchable Power Source 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. 根据第一段中“These are made from hydrogels (水凝胶) containing over 60% water. This makes them both soft and flexible.(这些电池由含水量超过60%的水凝胶制成。这使得它们既柔软又灵活)”可知,是材料(水凝胶)赋予了果冻电池柔软和可弯曲的特性。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Much as an electric eel can increase small electrical with the help of muscle cells, jelly batteries can increase their output by being tied together.(就像电鳗可以借助肌肉细胞增强微弱电流一样,果冻电池可以通过串联在一起来提高输出功率)”可知,通过将自身连接起来可以提高电量输出。 根据最后一段中“The next step for the Cambridge team is to test the biological safety of their jelly batteries when implanted in human body: although, as they are mainly water-based, the team does not expect any rejection problems.(剑桥团队的下一步是测试果冻电池植入人体时的生物安全性:尽管因为它们主要是水基的,团队预计不会出现任何排斥问题)”以及“Besides wearable and implantable devices, another potential market for stretchable batteries is soft robotics where stretchy parts would be safer to operate among people than traditional robots.(除了可穿戴设备和可植入设备,可拉伸电池的另一个潜在市场是软体机器人领域,在那里,可伸缩部件比传统机器人在人群中操作起来更安全)”可知,果冻电池在生物医学领域的应用前景广阔。 文章开篇第一段介绍“A group at the University of Cambridge has used the eel’s way to come up with what it calls “jelly batteries”.(剑桥大学的一个小组利用鳗鱼的方式提出了所谓的“果冻电池”)”,随后重点描述了其核心特性“While most batteries experience a loss of electricity if they are bent or stretched, a jelly battery can be stretched up to one-and-a-half times its length with no electricity loss.(虽然大多数电池在弯曲或拉伸时会损失电量,但果冻电池可以拉伸到其长度的1.5倍而不会损失电量)”并分析文章可知,全文围绕果冻电池展开,核心特点是可拉伸(stretchable),且是一种电源(power source)。 When was the last time you updated your resume (简历)? If it’s been a while, you might want to give it a refresh. ____16____ Here’s some advice on how to write a resume that’s both competitive and up-to-date. A standard resume typically begins with some key information at the top, such as your name and contact number. You don’t need to include your home address. Doing so might suggest you aren’t open to remote work opportunities. ____17____ Never underestimate how a shared academic interest can instantly build connection with the readers. Adding a paragraph of three-to-five sentences summarizing your professional identity and career is crucial. ____18____ Use descriptive language to define your role, emphasize unique skills, and state career goals — ultimately showing how you plan to contribute to your field. ____19____ This acts as an enhanced digital version of your resume, offering additional features. Hiring managers often search for candidates online before interviews. Providing this link makes it easier for them to access relevant details about your qualifications. Resume gaps aren’t unusual, but they should be dealt with thoughtfully. A few ways can help address these gaps, such as listing work history by year instead of month to cover shorter unemployment periods. If needed, unpaid community work and volunteer service during the gap should be included. For longer gaps, briefly explain them in your cover letter. ____20____ A. Don’t forget, by the way, to add your major. B. Keep in mind that the standard is always changing C. For a fuller professional picture, include a link to your profile. D. This could spark employers’ interest in your academic performance. E. If asked during an interview, discuss them honestly rather than avoid. F. The best way to deal with the gaps is by removing them from your resume. G. This section should clarify your expertise, strengths, and key achievements. B 17. A 18. G 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 上文“If it’s been a while, you might want to give it a refresh.(如果有一段时间没更新了,你可能需要刷新一下简历)”说明更新简历的必要性。空后“Here’s some advice on how to write a resume that’s both competitive and up-to-date.(以下是一些如何撰写兼具竞争力和时效性的简历的建议)”引出具体建议。 B“Keep in mind that the standard is always changing(请记住,标准总是在变化的)”承接前文“更新”的必要性,并引出后文关于新标准的建议,符合语境。 【17题详解】 上文“You don’t need to include your home address. Sharing the same passion for music, Eddie formed a band, The Stars, with his childhood friends Luis and Ruben. One day, they received a letter inviting them to a local music festival a month away. Excited, they decided to practise separately every day and then together once a week. But deep down, Eddie worried about their show because of Ruben, the guitarist. Although Ruben was a quick learner, he didn’t like to practise on his own at home. As a result, he often made a lot of mistakes due to lack of practice. This was a big problem for the band. One week later, as scheduled, they gathered at the drummer Luis’s house for group practice. But they had only played a few lines when Ruben started making mistakes. “Sorry. I ... I just ...” Ruben tried to make an excuse. “You just haven’t been practising again. You are always like this! We need to practise more; we are running out of time.” Luis’s face turned red with anger. Ruben also shouted back. Both boys stood locking eyes, full of tension. Eddie broke up the argument and calmed them down. He turned to Ruben, asking why he didn’t play at home. “I don’t like to play music on my own,” Ruben confessed (坦白). “My guitar sounds lonely by itself. You know I have trouble focusing on things.” That night, Eddie’s father asked how band practice was going. Letting out a frustrated sigh, Eddie told him what had happened, saying they were considering replacing Ruben. His dad listened quietly, and then offered a simple suggestion, “Instead of practising the same song alone, why not figure out what helps Ruben focus?” Not wanting to lose Ruben as a band member or as a friend, Eddie began to think about it. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 Suddenly an idea struck Eddie. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The day of the music festival finally arrived. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 Suddenly an idea struck Eddie. B In a quiet corner of Montreal, Canada, 72-year-old Elaine McBride has spent the past decade breathing new life into abandoned books. C Rejection (拒绝) hurts. D Batteries are getting smaller, lighter and more powerful all the time. Jelly batteries: A Stretchable Power Source 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When was the last time you updated your resume (简历)? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
