范文:
Dear fellow students,
As the chairman of the Student Union,I'm writing to call on you to avoid excessive social media use,
since a recent survey shows many of us overuse it,affecting our daily life.
Though social media is a useful tool for connection and information, itsoveruse distracts us from
study and makes us feel isolated. We should set screen limits, focus on meaningful hobbies and real
interactions. Our union will also organize related activities to support you.
Join us to build a balanced digital life. With joint efforts,we can focus more on study, deepen
friendships and grow better beyond the screen.

W:Great!I will take your advice.Thanks

Two months into my Ph.D.,I was about to quit.My broken English made it hard to keep up
with colleagues. At lab meetings, the conversation progressed so quickly that by the time I
understood a question, the discussion had already moved on.I once ruined an experiment due to
misunderstanding instructions.In a presentation,I embarrassed myself by confusing"gene dilution"
with"gene deletion".I felt out of place, uncertain about my future in science.
I had moved to Hong Kong from the Chinese mainland, excited to become a scientist, but
quickly felt lost. The lab was full of complex (instruments I had only ever seen in
textbooks, and I had no idea how to use them. Most of all,the language barrier (made
everything harder.Classes were taught in English, and I struggled to follow the discussions.
After a particularly embarrassing presentation,a senior lab member pulled me aside and said,
"You are not here because of your English. You are here because you can think."His words gave

me the strength to continue.I began recording every class and replaying the discussions at night.
Slowly,my English improved, and I grew more confident in expressing my ideas.
Years later,I returned to my hometown to run my own lab.My students all spoke Mandarin
(普通话),and I assumed they wouldn't struggle as much as I had because they didn't face the same
language barrier. But I soon realized they too battled doubts about their careers and abilities.I
realized my job was to teach them to think critically and solve problems creatively, just as I had
been taught. When I saw a student struggling with an experiment,I told her,"You are not here
because your experiments always work. You are here because you can think."Her smile told me
she was encouraged by these words.
Today, what I value most in my job is the change I see in the students who arrive uncertain,
but who leave with enough confidence to challenge me,their professor. For me,helping others
cross the bridge is the true reward of scientific life.
24.Why did the author almost quit her Ph.D.according to paragraph 1?
A.She disliked lab discussions.
B.She lacked future plans in science.
C.She messed up her presentation.
D.She struggled with language challenges.
25.What was the turning point for the author during her Ph.D.studies?
A.Her embarrassing presentation.
B.Returning to her hometown to run a lab.
C.The senior lab member's supportive comment.
D.Moving to Hong Kong from the Chinese mainland.
26.Which word would best describe the author as a teacher?
A.Inspirational.
B.Strict.
C.Humorous.
D.Knowledgeable.
27.What does the underlined phrase"cross the bridge"in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Change from a student to a professor.
B.Grow from uncertainty to confidence.
C.Travel between countries for education.
D.Build connections between professors and students.
C
Imagine the final trip of a marathon:your body aches, but the cheering crowd gives you
energy to run faster.Similarly,a basketball team wins more home games in front of their own fans.
Even you might solve a problem faster when someone watches. These common experiences all
point to a basic psychological principle.
This phenomenon is known as social facilitation ()which describes how individuals can

perform tasks differently when in the company of others compared to when they are alone. The
concept was first introduced by psychologist Norman Tripplett, who noticed that cyclists raced
faster in groups. He tested his theory with a simple experiment where children were tasked with
winding fishing line.Tripplett observed that the children who were being around others moved
faster,suggesting that a peer(同龄人)nearby can motivate..
But later studies found conflicting(相互矛盾的)evidence..In another test, participants(参与
were given a more challenging task, like memorizing a list of words. Those in front of others
performed worse than those working alone. This conflict led to a key change of the theory. The
presence of an audience tends to improve performance on simple tasks. On the other hand, for
novel tasks, the same audience can hurt performance.
Why does this happen?Psychologists suggest the key reason is our concern about being judged
by others.Since approval and disapproval often depend on others'evaluations,we naturally
become more watchful in front of an audience. This watchfulness helps with mastered skills, but
gets in the way of learning new ones.
There isn't one secret for success, but social facilitation theory helps to point us in the right
direction. To improve a well-practiced skill like running or playing an instrument, strategically find
an audience by joining a club or performing publicly. If you struggle when watched, practice alone
until you gain confidence.By taking advantage of social settings wisely,we can use the audience
effect to achieve our best performance
28.What is the main idea of social facilitation?
A.Group interaction improves learning efficiency.
B.Individual performance peaks in competitive settings.
C.Social situations have predictable effects on behavior.
D.The presence of others can influence our performance.
29.Which factor can explain the conflicting results in paragraph 3?
A.The size of the audience
B.The difficulty of the task.
C.The type of the reward.
D.The personality of the participant
30.What is the root cause of social facilitation?
A.Evaluation anxiety.
B.Peer pressure.
C.Competitive desire.
D.Personal standard.
31.What does the author suggest we do about the phenomenon?
A.Gradually increase audience size.
B.Thoughtfully manage social contexts.
C.Actively observe others'performances.
D.Strategically find supportive audiences

Researchers have developed a robotic hand that can not only move about on its fingertips, but
it can also bend its fingers backward, connect and disconnect from a robotic arm and pick up and
carry one or more objects at a time, researchers report January 20 in Nature Communications.
"It's been a dream to design a new hand which differs from human-like hands,"says Aude
Billard,a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology."It allows people to think out of
the box,to rethink what it is to have a hand or finger."
Billard and her coworkers used a genetic algorithm(算法),which simulated(模拟)how
different combinations of robot features would work together. That allowed the team to gradually
improve the design and come up with several blueprints for hand-shaped bots that could walk,
grasp(抓取)and carry objects.
When connected to the mechanical arm,the robotic hand could pick up objects like a human
hand. But the robot is more flexible. The fingers bend backward just as easily as forward, allowing
the robot to hold objects against both sides of its hand at the same time.It can even open a bottle
while holding it in place. When the robot was separated from the arm,it was most stable
walking on four or five fingers and using one or two fingers for grabbing and carrying things, the
team found. The hand disconnected from the robotic arm could use its fingers as legs to move, pick
up things and carry them back to the arm.
The robot could one day aid in industrial checks of pipes and equipment too small for a human
or larger robot to access, says Gao Xiao,a roboticist now at Wuhan University in China. It might
even work as a prosthetic (hand though further research is needed to understand how
human brains would control and respond to body parts that don't match human physical structure,
says Billard.
32.What can we learn about the robotic hand from Billard in paragraph 2?
A.It looks exactly like a human hand.
B.It breaks free from human hand limits.
C.It is designed to carry heavy objects.
D.It changes how people use their hands.
33.What is a feature of the robot hand according to paragraph 4?
A.It walks well on two fingers
B.It's good at fine movement skills.
C.It can grasp things from both sides.
D.It's controlled by human brains.
34.What is Billard's attitude toward the robot hand as a prosthetic hand?
A.Confident but cautious.
B.Doubtful and critical.
C.Hopeful but worried.
D.Curious and eager.

The Librarian's(图书管理员)Gift
The school library was always a place of quiet order, but it felt impersonal to Lena,a new
student struggling to find her place. That was until she met Mrs Davies, the librarian.Unlike any
adult Lena had known,Mrs Davies had a way of making everyone feel seen.36
One rainy Tuesday, feeling particularly lonely,Lena wandered around the bookshelves after
the bell rang.Mrs Davies approached,not with a question,but with a quiet observation."I've
noticed you often look at the travel section,"she said softly. She then reached for a book with a
worn blue cover.37 "This one found me at your age,"she said, and handed it to Lena
without another word.
It wasn't a grand gesture,but at that moment,it felt like a lifeline.38
She learned that
Mrs Davies had once traveled widely, and that this job was a choice to surround herself with stories
and young minds. Her recommendations were never random(随意的);they were quiet invitations
into different worlds.
Lena started visiting the library daily. She read the book, then another that Mrs Davies
suggested.Slowly, the world within the pages felt more familiar than the hallways of the school.
39
The library had changed from a silent room into a space of endless possibility, all because
one person had paid attention.
On the last day of school,Lena returned the blue book."Thank you,"she said, her voice thick
with emotion.Mrs Davies simply smiled, her eyes understanding.40 She knew that the
right story, given at the right time, could itself be a guide
A.She began to see the library through Mrs Davies's eyes
B.It was a novel about a journey, both physical and mental.
C.Her smile was sincere and always offered book recommendations.
D.It felt like a key had been turned, unlocking Lena's unknown door.
E.Curious,Lena started to learn more about the woman behind the desk.
F.She has a quiet talent for matching a restless heart with the story it needed.
G.She didn't need to say more;the connection built through books was enough.
