In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area.
It's important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insect emergence.(春天鸟儿在适当的时间到达非常重要,因为它们要让到达时间与昆虫出现时间一致),所以so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant.(所以它们需要在昆虫最充裕的时候到达),故选B。
Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations. Her results suggest that they do.(Napoli已经开始对由Smiley和他的团队就鸣禽迁徙时间所收集的近76000份观察资料展开分析,目的是看看这些材料是否也证明了气候变化改变了鸟类迁徙时间。
Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations.

根据文章第二段画线词后的“why narwhals have this strange long tooth(为什么独角鲸有这种奇怪的长牙?)”以及“Some think that the tusk is a tool for survival, as they could possibly use it to break up ice or spear fish for meals. However, the vast majority of female narwhals don't have tusks, and females tend to live longer than males. Most scientists now think the tusk provides no advantage for survival.(一些人认为长牙是一种生存工具,因为它们可以用它来打碎冰或刺鱼吃。然而,绝大多数雌性独角鲸没有长牙,而且雌性往往比雄性活得更长。大多数科学家现在认为长牙对生存没有任何好处)”可知,科学家们有的认为独角鲸的长牙是为生存而生,有的认为长牙对生存没有用处,直到2014年的研究才发现这种长牙可能是一个感觉器官,而之前都是一些“猜测”,故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第二段末句“The finding suggests that the tusk might also be a sensory organ.(这一发现表明,长牙也可能是一种感觉器官。)”
根据文章最后一段“ Researches suggest that narwhals are the most vulnerable (易受伤害的)marine mammals to human activities in the Arctic because these isolated creatures are highly sensitive to ship activities. Their response to changing conditions near the pole could provide insight into larger changes in Earth's future. (研究表明,独角鲸是北极地区最容易受到人类活动影响的海洋哺乳动物,因为这些孤立的生物对船舶活动非常敏感。它们对极地附近环境变化的反应可以让我们了解地球未来更大的变化。)”可知独角鲸在气候变化面前痛苦挣扎,是最容易受到人类活动影响的海洋哺乳动物,以及它们对极地附近环境变化的反应可以提供对地球未来更大变化的洞察,可知必须保护独角鲸,故选A。
31.主旨大意题。文章第一段“The narwhal is a mysterious resident of the remote Arctic.(独角鲸是遥远北极的神秘居民)”引出独角鲸;文章第二段“Experts have long speculated why narwhals have this strange long tooth.(专家们长期以来一直在猜测独角鲸为什么有这种奇怪的长牙)”讲述对独角鲸的长牙的各种猜测;第三段“Narwhals are an important subsistence resource (生存资源)for high Arctic communities.(独角鲸是北极高地社区的重要生存资源。)”

根据第一段“Many philosophers and psychologists have argued that empathy (共情) is a natural characteristic, hard-wired into our genes and brains.(许多哲学家和心理学家认为,同理心是一种自然特征,根植于我们的基因和大脑中。)”和“This is all well and good if you’re already empathetic, but also means that if you struggle with empathy, you’ll never improve no matter how hard you try.(如果你已经有同理心,这一切都很好,但也意味着如果你在同理心方面挣扎,无论你多么努力,你都永远不会提高。)”
根据第三段中的“However, when healthcare professionals care too much, they are at high risk of burnout, tiredness and depression from over-empathizing with others’ suffering.(然而,当医疗保健专业人员过于关心时,他们很有可能因过度同情他人的痛苦而感到倦怠、疲倦和抑郁。)” 再根据第四段中的“For example, empathetic concern-feeling for someone—is distant from emotional empathy—feeling as someone else does. If they can develop concern instead, for example, they can care without falling apart.(例如,移情关怀——对某人的感觉——与情感移情——像别人一样的感觉是有距离的。例如,如果他们能培养出关心,他们就能在不崩溃的情况下关心他人。)”可知,作者建议医护人员努力提高他们的同理心。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“In another set of studies conducted with Carol Dweek, a Stanford professor of psychology, we found that merely believing empathy is a skill that can be developed inspired people to try harder at it.(在与斯坦福大学心理学教授Carol Dweek进行的另一组研究中,我们发现,仅仅相信同理心是一种可以培养的技能,就能激励人们更加努力地去做这件事。)” 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Through the right practices, such as diverse friendships and even fiction reading, we can grow our empathy on purpose. Empathy is something like a muscle: left unused, it weakens; put to work, it grows.(通过正确的做法,比如不同的友谊,甚至小说阅读,我们可以有意地培养我们的同理心。同理心就像一块肌肉:如果不使用,它会变弱;投入工作,它就会成长。)”可知,文章就同理心展开讨论,同理心是一种对他人的情感产生共鸣或表现出共情和同理心的能力,因此本文最可能出现在教科书的对他人的感觉这个单元,故选B。

Soon, the stick was coming to Tom. His heart beat fast, but he remembered the coach’s words: “Keep the same speed and look at each other.” As the second runner came close, Tom slowed down a little, reaching his hand back. He felt the stick touch his palm — he caught it! Then he ran as fast as he could toward Jake, trying not to hear the loud cheers. When he was almost there, he looked straight at Jake, who had already started running. Tom quickly passed the stick, and Jake held it tightly. It worked! Tom stopped, breathing heavily, and watched Jake run to the finish line. It was very close. Jake leaned forward at the last second, and their team won by just a step!
After the narrow win, the coach came over to Tom with a big smile. “That perfect pass made the win possible!” he said happily. Jake ran over too, still out of breath but smiling widely. “We did it together!” he said loudly, giving Tom a high-five. At that moment, Tom felt truly happy and part of the team. He used to think running alone was best, but now he understood that winning with others felt even better. The relay stick, which once made him nervous, now reminded him that trusting his teammates was the key to their success.

In 1869, the Smiley family purchased an area of land about 100 miles north of New York City. Over time, some of their property and much of the surrounding landscape became the Mohonk Preserve, which has since grown to 8, 000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers.
But the Mohonk Preserve also has a long scientific legacy. In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area.
Megan Napoli is a research ecologist with the Mohonk Preserve in New York. She thinks Smiley’s efforts produced a rare long-term data set of observations, which is useful for studying the impacts of climate change. For instance, other research has shown that songbirds are migrating north earlier and earlier in the spring.
It’s important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insect emergence. So they need to be here to establish their nesting sites, lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, they have their baby birds, so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant.
Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations. Her results suggest that they do.
Napoli found that short-distance migrants that spend their winters in the southern U. S. now arrive an average of eleven days earlier than they did in the 1930s. Long-distance migrants that overwinter in the tropics arrive roughly a week earlier. Napoli presented her results at a recent Ecological Society of America meeting in Portland, Oregon.
Meanwhile, who knows how many other long-term, personal data collections like Smiley s are out there, waiting to be discovered and to help improve official attempts to track the planet’s changes.
24.What do we know about Dan Smiley?
A.He lived in New York City. B.He was a scientific researcher.
C.He owned the Mohonk Preserve. D.He kept a record of wildlife.

A.The birds’ birth. B.The birds’ arrival.
C.The nest building. D.The insect appearance.
26.What does Megan Napoli think of Smiley’s long-term record?
A.It has affected the birds’ migration. B.It challenges the previous research.
C.It has changed official attitudes. D.It is of great value to her research.
27.What can we learn from Napoli’s research?
A.It is totally based on Smiley’s long-term notes.

The narwhal is a mysterious resident of the remote Arctic. The species, a relatively small whale is known for growing a spiral tusk (螺旋长牙)that resembles the historical description of a unicorn's horn.
Experts have long speculated why narwhals have this strange long tooth. Some think that the tusk is a tool for survival, as they could possibly use it to break up ice or spear fish for meals. However, the vast majority of female narwhals don't have tusks, and females tend to live longer than males. Most scientists now think the tusk provides no advantage for survival, but rather acts as a sex characteristic and determines the social rank. But the tusk may also have another purpose. A 2014 study found the narwhal's tusk is full of sensitive nerve endings that allow the whale to detect changes in the environment, such as changes in temperature and salinity. The finding suggests that the tusk might also be a sensory organ.
Narwhals are an important subsistence resource (生存资源)for high Arctic communities. They provide the humans with high-calorie fat, protein and nutrients, vital and hard to come by in the harsh northern winters. Narwhal tusks were carved into artworks and sold to support families with few job opportunities.
Narwhal tusk is protected now. But similar to all other Arctic wildlife, narwhals are likely to struggle in the face of climate change. Warm temperatures in the Arctic have caused sea ice to disappear at an alarming rate. New shipping channels have become accessible, threatening narwhals and other marine mammals. Researches suggest that narwhals are the most vulnerable (易受伤害的)marine mammals to human activities in the Arctic because these isolated creatures are highly sensitive to ship activities. Their response to changing conditions near the pole could provide insight into larger changes in Earth's future.
28.What does the underlined word "speculated" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Known. B.Guessed.
C.Overlooked. D.Concluded.
29.What did the 2014 study find about the narwhal's tusk?
A.It is an indicator of gender.
B.It reveals narwhals' social rank.
C.It can sense changes in the water.
D.It can be used to dig fish for meals.
30.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The conservation of narwhals is a must.
B.The situation of climate change is under control.
C.Some human activities affect mammals slightly.
D.Narwhals are under the threat of being hunted.
31.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Research on Narwhals' Tusk
B.Insight into Climate Changes
C.Narwhals : Feature and Behavior
D.Narwhals : Mysterious Sea Unicorns

Many philosophers and psychologists have argued that empathy (共情) is a natural characteristic, hard-wired into our genes and brains. The reasoning goes that each of us has a “level” of empathy and—like our adult height—we’re stuck there for life. This is all well and good if you’re already empathetic, but also means that if you struggle with empathy, you’ll never improve no matter how hard you try.
Thankfully, this view is incomplete. Through the right practices, such as diverse friendships and even fiction reading, we can grow our empathy on purpose. Empathy is something like a muscle: left unused, it weakens; put to work, it grows.
No emotion is always useful, and that goes for empathy as well. This is especially true for nurses, doctors and other caregivers. These individuals are driven to their work by a deep desire to help others. Patients of empathetic doctors are more satisfied with their care. However, when healthcare professionals care too much, they are at high risk of burnout, tiredness and depression from over-empathizing with others’ suffering.
Some psychologists, including myself, are now exploring how people in these professions might empathize in more sustainable ways. For example, empathetic concern-—feeling for someone—is distant from emotional empathy—feeling as someone else does. If they can develop concern instead, for example, they can care without falling apart.
In another set of studies conducted with Carol Dweek, a Stanford professor of psychology, we found that merely believing empathy is a skill that can be developed inspired people to try harder at it. For instance, people who were encouraged to have a “growth mindset” around empathy, as compared to a fixed mindset, spent more time listening to the suffering of someone of another race and more energy towards trying to understand the opinions of someone from a different part of the political divide.
32.What view do many philosophers and psychologists have about empathy?
A.It grows when practiced often.
B.It is a result of individual experiences.
C.It is inborn and difficult to develop.
D.It varies depending on one’s upbringing.
33.What does the author suggest doctors do?
A.Develop their emotional empathy.
B.Try to erase their patients’ concern.
C.Care for their patients as much as possible.
D.Work on improving their empathetic concern.
34.Based on Carol Dweek’s studies in which situation are people willingly empathetic?
A.If they believe that empathy is flexible.
B.If they are given enough attention.
C.If they listen to the identical political views.
D.If they suffer racial discrimination.
35.In which unit of a textbook does the text most likely appear?
A.Understanding yourself more. B.Feeling for others.
C.Exploring genes and emotions. D.Repairing broken relationships.

Ways Your Cell Phone Affects Your Body and Mind
First, some good news. Your phone can keep you safer. A study found that 137 more lives were saved per 100,000 patients when people called 911 from a mobile phone rather than from a fixed one. 36
Scanning your phone right before bed can cause sleep disorder. To avoid that, make a habit of not using your phone for at least 30 minutes before you close your eyes.
37 People now spend more than five hours a day typing and tapping, and feel eyes achy. About 60 percent of Americans experience discomfort, such as dryness, eye tiredness, and even headaches. Try taking a break from screens every 20 minutes.
When you are awake, a single sound on your phone can signal the coming news. However, this can weaken your ability to focus on a task. 38 It can even encourage creative ideas when you are alone. When you’re bored, four different areas of your brain become active and work together to pull in thoughts and combine them in unique ways.
Memory suffers too. 39 Instead of relying on the instructions from your phone’s GPS, older adults choose the old way, which increases activity in a part of the brain important for memory. Taking pictures with your phone may also harm your memory.
It would be easy to avoid all these problems by simply putting down your phone. The problem: It isn’t so easy. 40 And researches have proved this real. Of course, there are many phone apps to help you control your phone addiction. Or you can just let the battery rundown and forget about it!
A.But there are plenty of worries too.
B.Your phone can do damage to your eyes.
C.Silence your phone or simply put it away can help.
D.Walking with your face in your phone can be dangerous.
E.People may feel painful when separated from their phones.
F.Your hand may feel painful when you hold your phone too long.
G.Using a map and trying to remember it may be better for your brain.

Relay races (接力赛) were often the most exciting sports, but for Tom, a new member of his school’s relay team, passing the stick was awkward and clumsy. As the third runner, his problem was to catch the stick smoothly from the second runner and pass it to Jake, the final runner. In their first practise, Tom messed up the pass to Jake repeatedly — sometimes too early, making Jake slow down suddenly, sometimes too late, causing Jake to miss the passing zone. These mistakes ruined their teamwork.
After the practise ended, Jake stormed over to Tom. “Your careless and unsteady passes will make us lose the game!” he shouted angrily. Tom hung his head low and felt fully responsible for the messy practise. He even thought about quitting the relay team to focus on running races alone, because the pressure of cooperating with teammates was so uncomfortable compared to the freedom of running alone. Jake turned away in anger without saying another word, barely ignoring the coach who walked over to try to calm both of them down.
The next day, the coach gathered the team for stick-passing practise. “I know you’re upset,” he said gently, “but relay races need teamwork and trust — that’s the key to smooth passes.” To make it feel like a real competition, he set up game-like situations with teammates cheering nearby. He taught them to keep a steady speed, make eye contact, adjust their pace to match each other, and use simple hand signals. The repeated practise helped improve their performance. Tom grew confident and Jake gave him encouraging nods.
A week of intense training passed, and the relay competition arrived. Tom felt a little nervous. Before the race, the team gathered, and the coach told them to believe in each other and stay calm. Jake patted Tom on the shoulder firmly, “I trust you. We’ve practised enough.” Tom nodded, turning nervousness into motivation.
At the sound of the starting gun, all runners shot out.
