M: Yeah! I hate sitting in the first row too.
W: By the way, thanks for getting this ticket for me. Do you want some popcorn and a drink?
M: That would be great!

W: It’s a pretty good conference, huh?
M: Yeah. All speakers are well-known and knowledgeable in the subject matter. Did you listen to John Miller’s speech on how to avoid business risks this morning?
W: No, I missed that one. I went to a speech at Alan Brown Hall. The speaker was David Thompson.
M: Oh, that should be a good one, too. I attended his lecture last year. By the way, there will be a workshop this afternoon on how to motivate employees. Are you interested?
W: Sure. I was promoted to the position of manager a few months ago. And I have to manage a staff of 12 people. It can be quite a difficult situation sometimes. That’s why I am here today.
M: Same here. I only have seven people reporting to me. Yet, sometimes I feel like pulling my hair out. I need to find a way to create harmony within my department.

根据第二段“The items you see in our store today are just the beginning. We’ll be adding more items next year”(今天你在我们店里看到的商品只是个开始。
根据第三段“Most of DFTBA’s clothes come from Bella + Canvas because of its shipping, water saving and energy saving practices.”(大部分DFTBA的衣服是来自于Bella + Canvas,因为它的运输,节约水和能源的惯例。)
Can I receive my order internationally?部分的第三段“You can find that support webpage at DFTBA Records Help Center.”(你可以在DFTBA Records Help Center找到这个支持网页。)

由第二段中“Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.
根据第三段中“The real reason is that I think there are very few places where we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration. I want them to think differently and make connections between the course materials and the class discussion. 故选A。
根据第四段“I’ve been teaching my history class this way for many years. The evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep course materials beyond the classroom. (多年来我一直用这种方法教历史课。评估反映了学生对我所创造的环境的满意度。学生们意识到,通过深入的对话和挑战,他们的学习水平可以帮助他们将课程材料保留在课堂之外。)”可知,作者的历史课受学生欢迎,学生非常满意,评估结果也非常高。故选A。
根据最后一段“I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

根据第三段“It can play the radio and is also able to remind people about important dates or to take medication.(它可以播放收音机,还能提醒人们重要的日期或吃药。)”
根据第四段“The study found that older adults who spent up to 18 hours over two weeks with the robot saw a significant improvement in their mental health and a small decrease in loneliness.(研究发现,老年人在两周内花18个小时与机器人在一起,他们的心理健康有了显著改善,孤独感也有了小幅下降。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“because it is the first and largest ever investigation into the use of autonomous social robots for older adults in care settings(因为这是有史以来第一次也是最大的一次关于在护理机构中使用自主社交机器人的调查)”可知,这项研究具有开创性,划线词groundbreaking的意思是“开创性的”,和innovative意思相近,故选B。
根据第四段“The study found that older adults who spent up to 18 hours over two weeks with the robot saw a significant improvement in their mental health and a small decrease in loneliness.(研究发现,老年人在两周内花18个小时与机器人在一起,他们的心理健康有了显著改善,孤独感也有了小幅下降。)”

根据第一段“How many phone numbers can you remember by heart? It’s probably fewer than you would like. Actually, you’re not alone. Out of more than 1,000 Americans who were surveyed, more than half said that they couldn’t recall the phone numbers of their friends and neighbors. And 44% said that they couldn’t remember their relatives’ phone numbers. In their eyes, there is no point in filling their heads with phone numbers if they’re all stored in smart phones that are with them almost all the time.(你能记住多少个电话号码? 可能比你想要的要少。 事实上,你并不孤单。在接受调查的1000多名美国人中,超过一半的人说他们想不起朋友和邻居的电话号码。44%的人说他们记不住亲戚的电话号码。在他们看来,如果手机号码几乎一直都存在他们身边,那么在他们的脑袋里塞满手机号码就没有意义了)”以及第二段“In fact, most people are suffering from a sort of digital amnesia. More than 90% of those surveyed agreed that they used the Internet as an online extension of their brains. Rote memorization was once an important part of modern education, but we just need a click or slide now. That’s making us worse at remembering things.(事实上,大多数人都患有某种数字健忘症。
根据第二段“In fact, most people are suffering from a sort of digital amnesia. More than 90% of those surveyed agreed that they used the Internet as an online extension of their brains. Rote memorization was once an important part of modern education, but we just need a click or slide now. That’s making us worse at remembering things.(事实上,大多数人都患有某种数字健忘症。超过90%的受访者同意他们将互联网作为大脑的在线延伸。死记硬背曾经是现代教育的重要组成部分,但我们现在只需要点击或滑动一下。这让我们的记忆力变差了)”可知,是人们对网络依赖太多导致了健忘症。故选C。
34.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Researchers found that when people expected to have access to information online, they were less likely to remember actual facts, but more likely to remember how to find them.(研究人员发现,当人们希望从网上获取信息时,他们不太可能记住实际信息,但更可能记住如何找到这些信息)”以及第四段中“We certainly have access to more knowledge now than ever, even if it isn’t all stored in our brains.(我们现在接触到的知识肯定比以往任何时候都多,即使这些知识并没有全部储存在我们的大脑中)”可知,人们可以比以前更容易获得知识。故选B。
根据最后一段中“Even so, I still believe that there are more risks to this new world of memory beyond losing our ability to recall some information such as who the 15th President was.(即便如此,我仍然相信这个新的记忆世界存在更多的风险,而不仅仅是丧失回忆一些信息的能力,比如第15任总统是谁)”可知,作者认为人们记忆力减退有一定的风险性,可推测作者对这一现象是担忧的。故选A。

39.上文“And so I tell them, and now you, if you only take one thing away from this workshop let it be this: sharing what you love and are good at-your passion-with someone else, never comes across as boasting.(所以我告诉他们,现在也告诉你们,如果你从这个研讨会上只带走一件东西,那就是:和别人分享你热爱且擅长的东西——你的热情——永远不会被认为是夸耀)”说明作者强调分享自身热情不是夸耀。 A“It is a form of connection and a gift(它是一种连接的形式,也是一份礼物)”中的“It”指代前文“sharing what you love and are good at”,阐述分享的积极意义,与前文观点相呼应,符合语境。故选A。
40.上文“And if you want to feel really great today, ask someone to share what they love and are good at with you. If they only talk about what they love, encourage them to tell you why they’re good at it.(如果你今天想感觉非常好,让别人和你分享他们热爱且擅长的东西。如果他们只谈论自己热爱的东西,鼓励他们告诉你为什么擅长)”说明作者给出了鼓励分享的具体建议。空处承接前文,提出进一步的倡议。选项E“Try to create a “boasting culture” in our pride-avoidant society(试着在我们避免炫耀的社会中创造一种“夸耀文化”)”是对前文建议的总结和升华,倡导创造鼓励分享优势的文化,与前文“分享不是夸耀”的核心观点相呼应,符合语境。故选E。

My parttime job as a cook started immediately. Every weekend I went to my grandma’s house to put my plan into action. Then gradually I could make lemonade well. Besides, an idea occurred to me. I added honey to her old recipe. That way, I could sell the lemonade and donate some of the money to groups that were helping to save bees. I could also support local beekeepers by using their honey in my product. And I could educate others on the importance of bees and help to save them.
My dad showed me how to improve my sales. At first, I sold lemonade at a stand(摊位) at a kids’ park. But I wanted to help bees all year round. Then my father took me to a pizza place near where I lived. They promised to sell it. Later, more stores agreed to sell it, too. To my delight, we sold lots of bottles in a year, raised lots of money and saved more bees. I felt proud of that.

The classroom, the bathroom, the outdoors — my smart phone is always in hand as if it were some magic self-defense tool capable of protecting me from all evil in the world. I also love my laptop, because it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices and truly communicate with others.
On occasion, I teach History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the materials and exchange their ideas in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptop, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance, some of them were not happy.
Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it, so I can relate to my students. The real reason is that I think there are very few places where we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration. I want them to think differently and make connections between the course materials and the class discussion.
I’ve been teaching my history class this way for many years. The evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep course materials beyond the classroom.
I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.
24.What upset some students most at the beginning?
A.The topics for class discussions. B.The requirements for idea exchange.
C.The materials chosen for the course. D.The ban on electronic devices in class.
25.Why are the students asked to give up technology in class?
A.To push them to be more involved.
B.To make connections with information.
C.To explore their potentials to study better.
D.To introduce them to more complex themes.
26.What can be inferred about the author’s classes?
A.They are well received and highly assessed.
B.The study environment is far from satisfactory.
C.They show his attitude against high technology.
D.The managers are promoted by attending the classes.
27.What message does the writer really want to convey?
A.He will stick to this practice until he changes for a new job.
B.Technology is an effective way to relate teachers to students.
C.Unpleasant experiences can be the beginning of some new rules.
D.A few hours of technology-free dialogue will harvest a lot.

Robots with artificial intelligence (AI) have been tested in care homes in the UK and Japan. Initial tests show that the robots reduce loneliness and improve the mental health of elderly residents.
The robot, called Pepper, was developed for a project called CARESSES. which is trying to create robots that behave and speak like the people they’re helping. To do this, Pepper uses a new type of AI that gives it “cultural competence,” or the ability to adjust how it speaks to different people, taking things like age, culture and religion into account.
The robot is autonomous and can remember things about the people it talks to, ask questions and make suggestions for activities. It can play the radio and is also able to remind people about important dates or to take medication.
The test project, which ran from 2017 to January 2020, was funded by the European Union and the Japanese government. The study found that older adults who spent up to 18 hours over two weeks with the robot saw a significant improvement in their mental health and a small decrease in loneliness. However, only 45 people participated, so more research is needed to confirm the results.
“This study is groundbreaking because it is the first and largest ever investigation into the use of autonomous social robots for older adults in care settings,” said Dr. Chris Papadopoulos of the University of Bedfordshire, one of the universities that worked on the study. “Poor mental health and loneliness are significant health concerns and we have demonstrated that robots can help relieve these.” However, according to users, there were some problems, like distracting head and hand movements, not enough cultural awareness, and surface conversations.
Papadopoulos said that Pepper is still being developed and it would take two to three more years of research and development before similar robots could be used in care homes. He also said Pepper wouldn’t replace human careers, but could help to improve the mental health of the elderly.
28.What can Pepper do for the elderly?
A.Make decisions for them.
B.Introduce different cultures to them.
C.Remind them of some important things.
D.Provide some simple medical treatments.
29.What do we know about the project?
A.It proves helpful for the elderly.
B.It was funded by the UK and Japan.
C.It lasted three years with confirmed results.
D.It aims to create robots with thinking ability.
30.What does the underlined word “groundbreaking” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Deserving. B.Innovative. C.Ordinary. D.Rewarding.
31.What can be inferred about the robot?
A.It is for sale on the market currently.
B.It is a success without any weakness.
C.It will replace caretakers in care homes.
D.It provides a way of company for the elderly.

How many phone numbers can you remember by heart? It’s probably fewer than you would like. Actually, you’re not alone. Out of more than 1,000 Americans who were surveyed, more than half said that they couldn’t recall the phone numbers of their friends and neighbors. And 44% said that they couldn’t remember their relatives’ phone numbers. In their eyes, there is no point in filling their heads with phone numbers if they’re all stored in smart phones that are with them almost all the time.
In fact, most people are suffering from a sort of digital amnesia. More than 90% of those surveyed agreed that they used the Internet as an online extension of their brains. Rote memorization was once an important part of modern education, but we just need a click or slide now. That’s making us worse at remembering things.
Researchers found that when people expected to have access to information online, they were less likely to remember actual facts, but more likely to remember how to find them. As a result, we are already becoming one with our computer tools, growing into interconnected systems that remember less by knowing information than by knowing where the information can be found.
However, some believe it isn’t necessarily a bad thing — maybe it gives them more chances to think through things. We certainly have access to more knowledge now than ever, even if it isn’t all stored in our brains.
Even so, I still believe that there are more risks to this new world of memory beyond losing our ability to recall some information such as who the 15th President was. That kind of information may always be a click away, but the important things are personal ones, like the way your parents smiled at your wedding. It’s harder to recall or find online. If you’re relying on yourself to keep track of those memories, they will be much more meaningful.
32.Paragraph 1 is mainly used to________.
A.serve as the background B.introduce the topic
C.explain new research D.attract readers’ attention
33.What’s the main cause of people’s suffering from digital amnesia?
A.Dealing with too many things. B.Seldom thinking about questions.
C.Relying on the Internet too much. D.The changes of their memories.
34.What can be learned from paragraphs 3&4?
A.People can receive less information using internet.
B.People can gain knowledge more easily than before.
C.It’s a bad thing to have a chance to think through things.
D.People find it hard to remember how to find information.
35.What’s the author’s attitude towards people’s memories now?
A.Worried. B.Optimistic. C.Disappointed. D.Confident.

Brand New You
We’re always told that no one likes a show-off, but a little bit of boasting (夸耀) does us all the world of good.
Once a year I teach a class on building personal brand to a group of women in the creative industries. At the start I ask each of the attendees how they feel about the phrase “personal brand”. 36 . Most of them will tell me it feels too much like boasting. By the end of the session, however, there’s a change in mood and it always comes down to one key point that I think everyone should know. So I’m sharing it here!
It’s really quite simple: acknowledging your strengths does not mean you boast yourself. 37 . But then we do an exercise that proves my point. I put the women in pairs and give them five minutes each to talk about things they love and are good at. When I give the instructions I am greeted by looks of horror. Five minutes?! Only talking about themselves?! What if the other person thinks they’re boasting?
38 . So is sharing it with others. And yet it’s so lovely to hear someone else share their passion. The room is filled with connection, laughter and joy. And so I tell them, and now you, if you only take one thing away from this workshop let it be this: sharing what you love and are good at-your passion-with someone else, never comes across as boasting. 39 .
And if you want to feel really great today, ask someone to share what they love and are good at with you. If they only talk about what they love, encourage them to tell you why they’re good at it. 40 . Maybe we’ll all feel better for it.
A.It is a form of connection and a gift
B.Almost everyone feels uneasy about it
C.Many people are impressed by your passion
D.Boast your strengths by building your personal brand
E.Try to create a “boasting culture” in our pride-avoidant society
F.When I say this in the workshop, there are always raised eyebrows
G.Owning what we are good at is an unfamiliar concept in our culture

When I was four years old, I got stung(刺痛) by a bee twice in one week! After that, I had a fear of bees. When I saw bees or heard any sound from bees, I fled away immediately. That was why my parents suggested that I learn about bees instead of being frightened. I went to libraries to borrow some books about bees, and I tried to watch videos about bees, though I didn’t like them at first. And gradually, I was interested in what I read and watched. I learnt that bees could help make the food we ate because of their pollination(传授花粉). Take pizza, for example. If we didn’t have bees to pollinate(给……授粉) tomato plants, we wouldn’t have tomatoes for sauce. And we wouldn’t have cheese without pollination, either.
But, at the same time, I learnt some bad news. One was that bees were struggling to survive. Many were dying. Some scientists thought it might be because of the chemicals that were used to kill other insects. What would happen if there were no more bees? I wanted to help. I thought, “What if I make lemonade, sell it, and raise money and donate it to groups who are saving bees?” I talked to my grandmother, Helen. She was a good cook and she was supportive when she knew what my plan was. She gave me her recipe for lemonade. It came from a cookbook from 1940. She had used it herself for more than 50 years. She always made lemonade for us when we visited her at weekends. And we all liked it. Most importantly, she promised to help me make it.
