As the first snows of the season start to fall, mountain towns across the Alps welcome winter visitors with smart new hotels. And this year is no different. Here are the best resorts (旅游胜地) to bed down in the Alps this season.
Experimental Chalet, Val d’Isère
France’s ski resort welcomes the newest hotel offering from the Experimental Cocktail Group. With the rebuilding of this lodge, you’ll find two new restaurants, a spa and a cocktail bar. In a resort filled with après-ski, this looks set to stand in a class of its own. From €423 (£356) per night, room only.
The Brecon, Adelboden
Founded in summer 2024 by Welsh chef Bryn Williams, the Swiss Alps features the chef’s signature restaurant, with a 1960 style, a panoramic living room, an outdoor pool, and a kitchen. It also provides access to the valley’s three ski areas. From €650 (£580) per night, all included.
Eriro, Ehrwalder Alm
On the fringe of the busy Austrian Tyrol resorts is hardly-heard-of Ehrwalder Alm. Accessible only by cable-car, Eriro is the resort’s only ski in, ski out hotel. Add in guided nature hikes and you’ll find it all wonderfully distinct from the traditional Austrian resort. From €1,550 (£1,300) per night, all included.
Der Böglerhof, Alpbach
This hotel near beautiful Alpbach has a timeless devotion to health and well-being. The valley’s great place to stay has also had a makeover (翻新), with a new wellness complex, outdoor pool, yoga studio and expanded family spa. And around it all is the peaceful 70-mile ski area. For decades, the Grammys’ spoken word awards had gone to audio (音频的) books. Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording was their official title. But in 2023, poets had their own title: Best Spoken Word Poetry Album — all because of the efforts of Chicago poet J. Ivy. He had spent six years knocking down the impossible doors, taking the art of poetry directly into the mainstream (主流). He explained that it was important because poetry is, in fact, a big part of music.
Being a driving force for the appearance of the new Grammy type, Ivy was the type’s first winner. Not only is he a poet, writer, and voice-over (解说) artist, who has shared stages with Prince, Dave Chappelle, and many other famous artists, but he also connects his poetry with music. Besides, he used to represent Chicago on Def Poetry, a TV series about spoken word poetry performances.
While Ivy’s career (职业生涯) is practically paved with gold, it wouldn’t have happened without his high school English teacher, Paula Argue. In his acceptance speech during the Grammy ceremony, Ivy shouted out the name of his high school English teacher.
Over 30 years ago, Paula picked Ivy out in class. Upon entering Argue’s class, he was asked to write a poem and read it aloud to the whole class. “I was a very shy kid with no confidence, so to read anything or speak in front of anyone made me scared,” Ivy said. To his amazement, Argue gave him an “A” and then encouraged him to enter a talent show. During the show, Ivy received a great cheer from the audience. “Immediately, my whole life changed in front of me. I went from feeling unseen to ‘they actually do see me’. And I kept wanting to have that feeling,” Ivy added.
The busy poet has spent some time on the road with his City Winery Tour. “I want to provide the world with something that people haven’t quite enjoyed with poetry. Poetry has carried me through the years. I just want to give all that back onstage,” said Ivy.
24. What change did J. Ivy bring in 2023?
A. Mixing poetry with popular music.
B. Producing top audio books on poetry.
C. Getting poetry recognized by the Grammys.
D. Including poets in the Grammys’ judges.
25. What does paragraph 2 highlight about Ivy?
A. His advantageous personal relationships.
B. Early learning from professional artists.
C. Various themes of his creations.
D. His impressive career achievements.
26. What contribution did Paula make to Ivy’s success?
A. Appreciating his artistic talent early.
B. Preparing him for every performance.
C. Recommending his works to the Grammys.
D. Helping him create the award-winning poetry.
27. What does Ivy expect to do through his City Winery Tour?
A. Promote his new poetry collection.
B. Share his growth story with audiences.
C. Encourage self-expression through poetry.
D. Give audiences a unique poetry experience.

The cloud forest of the Western Andes in Colombia is one of nature recordist Juan Pablo Culasso’s favorite places in the world. He loves the bird songs he records, without the insect noises that are so common in other nearby regions.
Born blind, Culasso pays more attention to the sounds of nature than most birders. In fact, he can identify more than 2,000 birds by their songs. Now he and his partners in Colombia have developed birding trails (路线). These trails enable people who are blind or have poor eyesight to visit the cloud forest of San Antonio. They can enjoy the birds of the area. The trails include six separate locations. The locations offer tours with specially trained guides.
Blind visitor Gabriel Soto took his first bird trip on one of the trails earlier this year. He also had an audio (音频的) guide with recordings of 50 common birds in the area. “It’s wonderful because it makes me experience birding freely,” he says. He went home that day with a new interest in birds. And now he often tries to identify bird sounds at home. “When you can identify them, you enjoy them a lot more,” he adds.
Using his knowledge of birdsong and tourism, Culasso trained local guides and tourist operators. During training, he asked guides to try to experience nature as he did. He challenged them to describe ecosystems (生态系统) in a detailed way without sight. What also makes the project unique is that the tours can be organized at any time, not just as scheduled special events.
Culasso hopes that encouraging bird tourism can drive the protection of this unique ecosystem. For example, the multicolored tanager, his favorite bird, was seldom seen just four years ago. Thanks to the local environmental protection, today this beautiful bird is often seen and heard. When nature is within reach, Culasso says, everyone wins.
28. What are the birding trails in San Antonio designed to do?
A. Support scientific research on local forests. B. Provide job opportunities for blind guides.
C. Apply new technology to bird feeding. D. Bring nature to those with sight problems.
29. How does the project benefit visitors according to Gabriel Soto?
A. By enabling creative bird photography. B. By improving communication skills.
C. By inspiring active bird exploration. D. By increasing physical activity.
30. What is the key feature of Culasso’s training approach?
A. Allowing planning of volunteer events. B. Organizing adventurous guiding trips.
C. Stressing the senses beyond sight. D. Encouraging memorization of bird species.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Save endangered birds actively. B. Enjoy birding through sound.
C. Travel through Colombia’s rainforest. D. Teach bird-watching to nature lovers.

Gijsbert Cirkel remembers the kids lying on the ground after a game, putting their feet in the air and crying, “Our feet are hot!” Their game was on artificial turf This heat-trapping plastic can get so hot during the day. A new water-storage grass system that Cirkel’s research team has just developed works to avoid that problem.
As a scientist, Cirkel studies water movement. The new system collects and stores rainwater about 8.5 centimeters below a playing field. Eventually, that water will turn into vapor and rise into the air. As this happens, it will lower the temperature of the playing surface. It’s like the way sweating works, where the body lets out sweat to carry heat away from the skin.
For their outdoor tests, the researchers created four small fields in the city of Amsterdam. Each was five meters on a side. Two plots (小块土地) topped the new rainwater-based system with artificial turf. One plot had real grass planted on top of that system. The last plot used standard artificial turf with no water storage below.
The new grass system did a good job storing rainwater and preventing runoff. It stored up to six times as much rainwater as typical artificial turf. The water would end up as vapor in the air, making the ground less hot. If many city plots were covered with such a system, they might mitigate a city’s warming from what’s known as the heat-island effect, says Cirkel.
Artificial turf has become more and more common. It holds up better than real grass to heavy use and wet conditions. But normal artificial grass doesn’t take in rain. Instead, water runs off it, carrying with it turf-based pollutants. These pollutants will move into the air and rainwater. Players will come into contact with these. The new system is a good effort, says Vasilis Vasilou, an environmental expert. He likes the new thinking, even though it doesn’t solve all the issues with artificial turf. Catching rainwater and cooling the artificial grass should cut down on the amount of pollution coming off these playing surfaces. And that would be a good step forward, Vasilou says.
32. What does the new system aim to deal with?
A. Trouble with turf care. B. Water supply for playing fields.
C. Injuries from playing on turf. D. Overheating of plastic grass.
33. What is the stored rainwater used for in the system?
A. Improving sports performance. B. Achieving natural cooling.
C. Speeding up the sweating process. D. Preventing soil loss in the field.
34. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Notice. B. Reduce. C. Support. D. Cause.
35. Which of the following is Vasilou’s expectation of the new system?
A. To save water for various uses. B. To increase the turf service time.
C. To copy the features of natural grass. D. To limit harmful effects of common turf.

Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. Every detail mattered, and he was determined not to overlook a single one. The pressure was huge, but Tom was accustomed to being on top. He had never tasted defeat, and he wasn’t about to start now.
The other children rarely approached him, and when they did, it felt forced. Tom preferred to keep to himself, confident in his ability to win yet again. He assembled(组装)his launch platform with great care, sorting through engines, igniters(点火器), and other tools in his toolbox. Suddenly, his igniter wire slipped from his grasp and disappeared into the grass. In a panic, he found another and carefully fitted it into place.
Tom checked his rocket again. It was perfect, but when he glanced at the others’ rockets, he found lots of problems immediately. One rocket, however, had the look of a winner. And Tom’s heart sank. A thin boy carried it carefully.
“Hi,” a voice interrupted his focus. It was the thin boy, Ed, offering a nervous smile, “Nice rocket.” Tom whispered thanks, eyes on his tools. He asked Ed where he tested his rockets because he had never seen him at the competitions before. Ed said he just practiced alone behind his house. Although Tom felt a bit nervous, he pretended not to care much about the contest. “Good luck,” said Tom, and he continued to concentrate on his own rocket.
As Ed lifted his rocket, Tom felt an increasing anxiety. Just then, he noticed a fin(尾翼)on Ed’s rocket had loosened. But Ed hadn’t noticed it. Tom felt a bit sorry but decided not to say anything.
As Ed’s turn approached, Tom’s heart jumped. He had to speak up, despite the risk of losing. “Ed, hold up!” he shouted, drawing the attention of the crowd.

D 29. C 30. C 31. B

根据第四段“Using his knowledge of birdsong and tourism, Culasso trained local guides and tourist operators. During training, he asked guides to try to experience nature as he did. He challenged them to describe ecosystems (生态系统) in a detailed way without sight. (凭借其对鸟鸣声和旅游业的了解,库拉索培训了当地的向导和旅游经营者。在培训过程中,他要求向导们尽量像他那样去体验大自然。他还要求他们以一种无需视觉的详细方式来描述生态系统)”可知,库拉索的训练方法强调视觉之外的其他感官。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第二段“Born blind, Culasso pays more attention to the sounds of nature than most birders. In fact, he can identify more than 2,000 birds by their songs. Now he and his partners in Colombia have developed birding trails
D
D 33. B 34. B 35. D

根据第一段“Gijsbert Cirkel remembers the kids lying on the ground after a game, putting their feet in the air and crying, “Our feet are hot!” Their game was on artificial turf (人工草坪). This heat-trapping plastic can get so hot during the day. A new water-storage grass system that Cirkel’s research team has just developed works to avoid that problem.(吉斯伯特·奇尔尔还记得孩子们在比赛结束后躺在地上的情景,他们把双脚举离地面,哭喊着:“我们的脚好烫啊!”他们的比赛是在人造草皮上进行的。这种吸热的塑料在白天会变得非常热。奇尔尔的研究团队刚刚研发出一种新的储水型草坪系统,能够解决这个问题)”可知,这个新系统旨在解决塑料草的过热问题。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“As a scientist, Cirkel studies water movement. The new system collects and stores rainwater about 8.5 centimeters below a playing field. Eventually, that water will turn into vapor and rise into the air. As this happens, it will lower the temperature of the playing surface. It’s like the way sweating works, where the body lets out sweat to carry heat away from the skin.(作为一名科学家,西尔克尔研究水的流动情况。这套新系统会在一个运动场下方约8.5厘米处收集并储存雨水。最终,这些雨水会变成水蒸气并升入空中。在这个过程中,它会降低运动场地的温度。这就像人体出汗的过程一样,身体通过出汗来将热量从皮肤带走)”可知,该系统中储存的雨水用于实现自然降温。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“The water would end up as vapor in the air, making the ground less hot.(这些雨水会以水蒸气的形式蒸发到空气中,从而使地面温度降低)”可知,雨水蒸发后地面温度降低。
根据最后一段“The new system is a good effort, says Vasilis Vasilou, an environmental expert. He likes the new thinking, even though it doesn’t solve all the issues with artificial turf. Catching rainwater and cooling the artificial grass should cut down on the amount of pollution coming off these playing surfaces. And that would be a good step forward, Vasilou says.(环境专家瓦西利斯·瓦西洛乌表示,这个新系统是个不错的尝试。他认可这种新的思路,尽管它并不能完全解决人造草皮存在的所有问题。收集雨水并为人造草坪降温能够减少这些运动场地排放的污染物数量。瓦西洛乌认为,这将是向前迈出的一大步)”可知,瓦西洛期望新系统限制公共草坪造成的不良影响。

【导语】本文主要介绍心理强大者的特点,区分其与不自信者的不同,并列出心理强大者的几个关键品质。
【36题详解】
根据上文“While the unconfident tend to be quick to anger and easily disturbed, mentally strong people are often calm and unshakable.(不自信的人往往容易生气,容易受到干扰,而心理强大的人往往冷静且坚定不移)”推测,此处应衔接上文心理强大者的特点,进一步说明其内在平和对面对挑战的影响,G选项“Their peace comes from within and shapes how they face life’s challenges.(他们的平和来自内心,并决定了他们面对生活挑战的方式)”中的Their指代上文的mentally strong people,呼应calm and unshakable,引出下文“How do you know if you’re on the path to becoming one of these quietly powerful individuals?(你如何知道自己是否正在成为这些沉默而有力量的人之一?)”。

Ed stopped, turned around and looked at Tom confusedly. Tom pointed to the loose fin. Ed fixed it just in time, and his rocket shot into the sky perfectly. The crowd cheered, and Tom felt a mix of regret and relief. He had solved a problem, but at the cost of his own victory. As his name was called, he had to walk into the field, win or lose. The numbers were announced, and Tom’s rocket had reached an impressive height, but it wasn’t enough to beat Ed. Then he noticed Ed coming over to him.
Tom felt the pain of defeat but also a sense of pride. He had helped Ed, and that counted for something. As he packed up his tools, a hand fell on his shoulder. It was Ed, thanking him. Tom couldn’t help but feel a connection, a shared bond over their common love of rockets. The other children approached, their attitudes softened by the day’s events. They invited Tom to join them at Ed’s house, and he nodded, feeling a shift within him. For the first time, he saw the value in sharing his passion and skills with others.
