Vocabulary
Mary and her cousins would go every month for a big family meal at their
grandparents’ house. Their grandfather often gave them a few coins, saying, “You can buy yourself something.” None of them saved their money. They spent it all! The grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents thought this was not good —the children would never learn to manage their pocket money. So they decided to have a test. They wanted to see what the children could get with the coins within a year.
Read the story quickly, answer the questions and try to grasp its main idea.
1
Tom, the smallest kid, spent all his money on sweets.
Jim was strong-willed. He wanted to win the test. He saved every cent. He was the clear winner.
Then there was Mary. She loved the violin, but the family couldn’t pay for her violin lessons. So Mary went to her neighbour, a violinist. Mary offered
him all the coins, asking the violinist to teach her how to play. It wasn’t much money, but seeing Mary’s excitement, the violinist agreed . He taught her happily for months. Later, the two played together in the park. They were very successful, and Mary was able to buy her own violin. Years later, Mary became a very famous violinist.
Why did the family decide to take this test?
Who is the winner, Tom, Jim or Mary?
The family decided to take the test because they thought the children would never learn to manage their pocket money (since the kids just ran off to spend the coins right away).
Jim is the clear winner (he saved every cent to win the test)./Mary is the real winner.
