There’s a word to 2 the kind of future world which often appears in science fiction: dystopia, an imagined unpleasant or bad place. The 3 is utopia (乌托邦). But does tomorrow’s world have to be so disappointing?
A new project wants to use the power of science fiction to show a better future. The aim of Project Hieroglyph is to 4 writers, scientists, engineers and artists to create optimistic stories about a harmonious society in the next 50 years.

The influence of science fiction has already been well evaluated in modern research. Why are people working on invisibility clothes (隐形衣)? Well, it’s Harry Potter, right?

“I’m so glad we’re finally leaving this miserable place,” Brianna said to her husband Tom. They were moving to Saturn since they had lived on Neptune long enough to know that this was not where they wanted their children to grow up.
“Jimmy, get out of my room!” Mia shouted.
“Come on, Mia. I’m done packing. Let me help!” Jimmy, her elder brother pleaded.
Mia wondered why her annoying brother wanted to help her. But she finally gave him a blue bag. “You can take it downstairs.”
Jimmy carried the bag over his shoulder, nearly falling over under the weight. “What’s in here? Rocks?” he asked.
“Books,” Mia replied. “Dad told me that Mom had built us a spaceship. There’s plenty of space.”
“Wow,” the children were amazed as they got on the spaceship. Soon, they were in space. The view was fantastic, but suddenly, they noticed a giant rock in their way.
“Is that flying towards us?” Mia asked.
“It’s an asteroid!” Tom shouted. “Everybody take cover!”
Mia screamed as the giant rock hit the spaceship. Everything went dark.
Mia opened her eyes. There’s a ringing in her ears. She saw her mother and brother lying beside. They were both still. Jimmy didn’t seem to breathe. Mia put her ear to his chest. “Thump.” She could hear Jimmy’s heart beat. She kept calling his name. Jimmy slowly opened his eyes. Mia hugged her brother closely. “I’m never letting go again.” she said.
“My... leg...” Jimmy mumbled. Mia let go, apologizing.
“Wow,” Jimmy replied. “That was fast. Didn’t expect you to break your promise that quick.”
Mia rolled her eyes. Then she found Brianna awake. She and Jimmy moved towards her, helping her upright.
“Where’s Tom?” Brianna asked.
They heard a faint voice. “I am here.”
Together, the family made their way to the planet’s surface. As they explored, Brianna fell into a hole.
“Mom!” Mia shouted. “Are you okay?”
“Come down here,” Brianna called.
“What’s down there?” Tom asked.
“Aliens,” Brianna replied.
Everyone jumped down. Mia noticed a blue stone behind Jimmy. “Hello!” the stone said. “I’m Pebblo, and these are Stony and Gabbry.”
Brianna laughed. “Pebblo, Stony, and Gabbry. Cute.”
“Can we stay with you?” Mia asked.
“Just until we find our way to Saturn,” Tom added.
The Rock Aliens huddled in a group and discussed for a while. Then Pebblo walked over and hugged Jimmy’s good leg. “We’ve got new roommates!” she laughed.

At first, I could hardly see anything. After moving down through dark, narrow caves, my eyes were not used to the light. But when I could focus again, I stood in surprise.
“It’s a…sea,” I cried.
“Yes. Axel,” my uncle said, “and I shall give it my name, as I discovered it!”
There was a great lake or even an ocean. The shore was covered with small shells where the first living beings lived. Around this sea stood a huge rock wall.
I could see far over this great sea because of a strange light. Not sunlight, of course, as we were deep below the surface. With its bright, clear whiteness, the light must have been electric.
We kept quiet inside a cave that must have been several miles high.
Human words cannot describe the discoveries of those who have been deep into the earth. My imagination was powerless before such wonders. I felt surprised and quite scared at the same time. However, the soft salty air cheered me up. After many days in much narrower spaces, it was a great relief.
“Ready to walk a little now?” asked my uncle. “Yes, certainly.”
“Well, let us follow the shore then,” he said, and we began to explore.
Soon, in front of us appeared a forest with trees like umbrellas. “Mushrooms!” said my uncle. And he was right! There were mushrooms in their thousands, and each was at least nine metres high. How excellent they were!
“Wonderful!” cried my uncle. “Now look under your feet.”
I hadn’t noticed the many bones under our feet as we walked. Suddenly I thought, if once these monsters lived here, might some still walk through these dark forests? I looked around nervously, but we were the only living beings in this underworld. Thankfully!
Finally, we returned to the cave we had entered from, and I went to sleep with strange thoughts. Where did this underground sea end? Where would we go?
—Adapted from A Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Axel slept with strange thoughts.
Axel guessed that the light was electric.

Axel and his uncle walked on the bones.

At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on Mars. Our own planet, the Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars.
First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars. It takes months. However, by 2100, spaceships can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!
There is a problem for us to live on Mars. The gravity (地心引力) of Mars is much less than that of the Earth. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To avoid this problem, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.
There will be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home that is connected to the Internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.
However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on Earth today. First, food will not taste good. Meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast, so the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.
1. Why do people want to live on Mars?
2. How long might it take us to get to Mars in 500?
3. What special things will people need if they live on Mars?
4. Where will students study on Mars?
5. According to the last paragraph, how many disadvantages (缺点) of living on Mars are mentioned?

Now scientists 4 (try) to make robots look like humans and do the same things as we do. Some robots in Japan can walk and dance. They are fun to watch. However, some scientists believe that 5 we can make robots move like people, it will be difficult to make them really think like a human. For example, scientist James White thinks that robots will never be able to wake up and know where they are. But many scientists 6 (agree) with Mr. White. They think that robots will even be able to talk like humans in 25 to 50 years.
Some scientists believe that there 7 (be) more robots in the future. However, they agree it may take hundreds of years. These new robots will have many different shapes. Some will look like humans, and 8 (other) might look like animals. In India, for example, scientists made robots that look like snakes. If buildings fall down with people inside, these snake robots can help look for people under the buildings.

【答案】1. Because the Earth is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. 2. Two or three days. 3. Special shoes. 4. In online schools at home. 5. Two./2.
