Hello, Liz and Gus. We know where you are now. We also understand that you hope we can land somewhere near you. But we can't land the mothership in the forest because there are too many trees. You must get to the landing site in less than 48 hours. We're coming to get you as quickly as we can. Please stay calm.
Now listen carefully. This is very important. Look at your map. Can you see square B4? Your spaceship is there. There's a river near you, in square C4. The river goes into a lake in B2, C2 and D2. There are some mountains next to the lake in E1, E2 and E3.
We're going to land the mothership in square D1.This is important to remember— square D1 is our landing site. We can’t land in A1,B1,Cl or A2,because there's a desert there. Since there's a town in D5 and E5,we can't go there either. We will land the day after tomorrow. You must get to the landing site in 48 hours. Then we will take off. You can only carry the most important things with you. You must leave most things behind. It's not always easy to decide. I hope you can make it! Oh, one more thing. Remember that you mustn't hurt or kill any living things on this planet. Good luck!

How do people deal with challenges when exploring the unknown world?
Think
Talking about things to take in an emergency
Look at the map on page 120 again. Liz and Gus's spaceship is on fire. They need to save the most important things from the ship. The following is a list of things in their spaceship.
a camera a tent oxygen
a knife food water
a map of the Bird World medicine sleeping bags
S1: I think they should take the map of the Bird World.
S2:I agree. The map is very important. You can't go anywhere without
the map.
S3:I think they should also take a camera with them.
S1: I don't agree. I think the camera is unnecessary.
1 Three students are discussing what things Liz and Gus should save from the ship. Read the dialogue and learn how to agree and disagree. Pay attention to the expressions in blue.
S1: I think they should take oxygen.
S2: I agree. Oxygen is necessary for them to live.
S1: I think they should take food and water.
S2: I agree. They can’t survive without food and water.
S1: I think they should take medicine.
S2: I agree. Medicine can help them when they are ill.
S1: I think they should take a knife.
S2: I don’t agree. I think the knife is not so important.
S1: I think they should take a tent and sleeping bags.
S2: I don’t agree. They don’t have enough time to rest outside.
2 Work in pairs. Imagine that you and your classmate are Liz and Gus. Discuss what five things to take with you.
·Choose five things and explain why you need them.
·Explain why you agree or disagree with your classmate.
·Try to reach an agreement on which five things to take.
·Share your list with the class and give your reasons for choosing
these things.
S1: We need to choose five important things from the spaceship. Which one do you want to take first?
S2: I think we should take oxygen. We can’t breathe without it.
S1: I agree. It’s the most necessary thing for us to live.
S2: Next, we must take water and food. We will feel hungry and thirsty on the way.
S1: Yes, I totally agree. We can’t walk a long way without food and water.
S2: What about the map of the Bird World? Shall we take it?
S1: Sure. We may get lost without the map, so we have to take it.
S2: How about medicine? Do we need it?
S1: I think so. If we get hurt or sick, medicine can help us.
S2: What about a camera, a tent, a knife and sleeping bags? Shall we take them?
S1: I don’t agree. They are not necessary. We only have time to take the most important five things.
S2: OK. We reach an agreement. The five things are oxygen, water, food, the map and medicine.
What can we say to express agreement?
I agree ./Exactly.
So do I. /I think so too.
That’s a good point.
That’s just what I was thinking.
What can we say to express disagreement?
• I don't agree. / I (disagree…
