It’s a familiar tale these days: A Canadian quits their exhausting day job to pursue a dream, like opening a coffee shop, and finds freedom and joy. My story is similar, with a twist.
It begins in 2016, during the last semester of my philosophy undergraduate, when I decided to become a writer after being inspired by modern and classic works I was reading. I earned a journalism master’s degree from New York University and worked at Toronto Life magazine. I had some success, interviewing important figures and even writing for The New York Times. But behind the scenes, I was constantly stressed and struggling to make rent.
Then things changed. Last summer, a friend invited me to coach a small group of 11-year-old volleyball players. I always loved volleyball but had pushed it aside because I thought it couldn’t be a career. I jumped at the chance. Every morning, I trained the kids on passing, setting and serving. I had gone from interviewing people to playing volleyball with kids in the park. Surprisingly, I felt alive again.
Volleyball reawakened a spirit of playfulness in me. I didn’t have to sit behind a computer all day. The parents paid me fairly and on time, and my work could not be replaced by artificial intelligence. So I went all in. I found gym space, started running my own clinics and created an organization called Super Volley.
Things are going decently well so far. Like many small businesses, I’m at the mercy of a rising cost of living, a harsh economy and consumers who might devote their Saturdays to something else. But I’ll keep going because this volleyball thing rewards me in ways that go well beyond money or journalistic fame.
4. Why does the author mention “a familiar tale” at the beginning?
A. To criticize people who give up stable jobs.
B. To suggest that opening a coffee shop is a good idea.
C. To introduce his own story of going after what he loves.
D. To warn readers not to follow others’ dream blindly.
5. What was the problem with the author’s writing career?
A. He didn’t have a chance to do meaningful work.
B. He had no interest in interviewing public figures.
C. He felt journalism was less serious than philosophy.
D. He was under great pressure and financially troubled.
6. What is the advantage of the author’s new career according to paragraph 4?
A. It allows him to make a large fortune. B. It cannot be replaced by technology.
C. It offers more social opportunities. D. It brings him more fame and public attention.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The author is still unsure if coaching can be a long-term career.
B. The author is realistic and finds deep fulfillment in what he does.
C. The author occasionally regrets leaving his previous writing career.
D. The author is confident that his volleyball business will expand soon.
C 5. D 6. B 7. B

根据第一段“It’s a familiar tale these days: A Canadian quits their exhausting day job to pursue a dream, like opening a coffee shop, and finds freedom and joy. My story is similar, with a twist.( 如今这样的故事屡见不鲜:一位加拿大人辞去繁重的工作,去追求自己的梦想,比如开一家咖啡店,从而获得了自由和快乐。我的故事也是如此,但其中有个不同之处。)”可知,作者用大众熟悉的叙事作为引子,目的是引出自己放弃写作、追求自己热爱之事的经历。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“I had some success, interviewing important figures and even writing for The New York Times. But behind the scenes, I was constantly stressed and struggling to make rent.( 我取得了一些成就,采访了重要人物,甚至还为《纽约时报》撰稿。但私下里,我总是压力重重,难以支付房租。)”可知,作者写作生涯面临的两大核心问题:精神压力和经济困境。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The parents paid me fairly and on time, and my work could not be replaced by artificial intelligence. So I went all in. I found gym space, started running my own clinics and created an organization called Super Volley.( 家长们支付的报酬合理且及时,而且我的工作无法被人工智能所取代。所以我就全力以赴了。我找到了健身场地,开办了自己的训练班,并创立了一个名为“超级排球”的组织。)”可知,作者的新职业的优势是它无法被技术所取代。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Things are going decently well so far. Like many small businesses, I’m at the mercy of a rising cost of living, a harsh economy and consumers who might devote their Saturdays to something else. But I’ll keep going because this volleyball thing rewards me in ways that go well beyond money or journalistic fame.( 目前一切进展得还算顺利。和许多小企业一样,我深受生活成本上涨、经济形势严峻以及消费者可能会把周六的时间花在其他事情上等因素的影响。但我还是会继续下去,因为这项排球事业给我带来的回报远不止金钱或新闻界的声誉。)”可推知,从最后一段可以得出作者既务实,又在新事业中获得了深刻的精神满足。
C
Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families, a child’s success is always “on show”. Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person.
The term “peacock parenting” comes from the idea of being “as proud as a peacock”. Here it means a self-centered style of parenting. A peacock parent may show off a “perfect family” in public, yet criticise the child behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations. Over time, the child may learn that love is conditional. They may hide their real feelings, stop exploring their own interests, and start to believe, “I am not worthy.”
Experts describe three common signs. The first is psychological control. When the child sets a boundary or feels upset, the parent may say, “You’re too sensitive,” and turn the blame back onto the child. This often creates a sense of guilt. The second is unpredictable mood swings. The parent can be warm one day and cold the next, making the child feel like they are “walking on eggshells”. In adulthood, this may lead to people-pleasing and weak boundaries. The third is role reversal. Some parents fail to provide proper care and attention, or even expect their child to look after them emotionally or physically. As a result, the child may grow up too fast and miss out on a normal childhood.
Healing takes time, but it is possible. The first step is to be kinder to yourself and reconnect with your own interests. Supportive friends, groups, or professional help can provide the care that was previously missing. Clear boundaries can also make a relationship safer, and if contact continues to cause harm, limiting contact may be necessary. After all, there are many places to find warmth, and not all of them are under a parent’s roof.
8. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To raise an issue. B. To describe a study.
C. To explain the causes. D. To offer the solutions.
9. What does “peacock parenting” in paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. Public approval. B. Unconditional love. C. Independent growth. D. Honest self-expression.
10. Which sign best matches “role reversal” in paragraph 3?
A. The parent praises the child in public. B. The child tries to win others’ approval.
C. The parent relies on the child for support. D. The child avoids setting any boundaries.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Distance ensures safety. B. Self-care is the final step.
C. Healing requires parental effort. D. Support exists beyond the family.
A 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第一段中的“Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families, a child’s success is always “on show”. Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person. (许多孩子努力让父母骄傲。但在一些家庭里,孩子的成功总被“展示”。父母想得到别人的赞扬,孩子可能感觉自己像个表演者,而不是一个人。)”可知,第一段提出有些父母把孩子的成功当作炫耀资本这一问题,从而引出下文对孔雀式育儿的介绍。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“The term “peacock parenting” comes from the idea of being “as proud as a peacock”. Here it means a self-centered style of parenting. A peacock parent may show off a “perfect family” in public, yet criticise the child behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations. (“孔雀式育儿”一词源于“像孔雀一样骄傲”的说法。在这里,它指一种以自我为中心的育儿方式。孔雀式父母可能在公共场合炫耀“完美家庭”,但当孩子达不到高期望时,会在私下批评孩子。)”可知,孔雀式育儿主要关注获得公众的认可与赞扬。故选A项。

Screens are steadily taking over more and more of our life, leading some researchers to worry about the effect of long-term use on older adults’ brain. It has been suggested that this might lead to so-called “digital dementia” — that depending on digital technology throughout our life might harm cognitive (认知的) functioning in our later years.
But new research indicates this view doesn’t appear to be true, at least for the “digital pioneer” generation who first routinely used smartphones, computers and the Internet — and who are now reaching the age when cognitive decline often starts to appear.
In a paper published on Monday in Nature Human Behaviour, researchers analyzed 57 studies of digital technology use and cognitive function in more than 400,000 older adults across the world. They found that people in the “digital pioneer” generation who engaged more with digital technology did not have higher rates of cognitive decline. In fact, technology use was associated with lower rates of cognitive decline.
One reason some researchers worried about “digital dementia” was previous research that linked television viewing, a passive activity, with negative outcomes such as an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease “On the surface, most computer or smartphone screentime might seem similarly passive,” says the new paper’s co-author Michael Scullin, a neuroscience researcher at Baylor University. “But for this group of middle-aged and older adults, phones and computers have been used for mentally stimulating activities and for social connections, such as solving puzzles, engaging with the news, chatting with friends, or using reminders and alarms to help with daily activities.”
“This study provides a strong challenge to the widespread fears about ‘digital dementia’ and highlights the potential of technology as a tool for cognitive enrichment,” says Chiara Scarampi, a neuroscientist at the University of Geneva, who was not involved with the study. “‘Digital dementia’ has always felt like a catchy but overstated concept to me,” she adds. “Cognitive offloading — using tools like reminders or GPS — is not harmful by nature. In fact, it can free up cognitive resources for more complex tasks.”
12. What do we know about the “digital pioneer” generation?
A. They are addicted to digital technology.
B. They start using digital tools at an old age.
C. They are the first to use digital tools regularly.
D. They start suffering from sharp cognitive decline.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The widespread use of digital tools. B. The analysis of the new research finding.
C. The great complexity of mental activities. D. The implication of the previous research finding.
14. What is Scarampi’s attitude toward “digital dementia”?
A. Approving. B. Tolerant. C. Critical. D. Unclear.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Responsible Technology Use Matters.
B. Cognitive Decline Isn’t Just about Aging.
C. Digital Tools May Actually Enhance Our Life.
D. Tech Use Isn’t Driving Dementia in Older Adults.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第二段“But new research indicates this view doesn’t appear to be true, at least for the “digital pioneer” generation who first routinely used smartphones, computers and the Internet — and who are now reaching the age when cognitive decline often starts to appear. (但新的研究表明,这种观点似乎并不成立,至少对于“数字先驱”一代而言是如此。这一代人是第一批常规使用智能手机、电脑和互联网的群体,如今他们正步入认知衰退通常开始出现的年龄段。)”可知,“数字先驱”一代指的是首批定期使用数字工具的人群。故选C。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“One reason some researchers worried about “digital dementia” was previous research that linked television viewing, a passive activity, with negative outcomes such as an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症). “On the surface, most computer or smartphone screentime might seem similarly passive,” says the new paper’s co-author Michael Scullin, a neuroscience researcher at Baylor University. “But for this group of middle-aged and older adults, phones and computers have been used for mentally stimulating activities and for social connections, such as solving puzzles, engaging with the news, chatting with friends, or using reminders and alarms to help with daily activities.” B“The analysis of the new research finding. (对新研究发现的分析。)”概括了段落核心。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“‘Digital dementia’ has always felt like a catchy but overstated concept to me,” she adds. “Cognitive offloading — using tools like reminders or GPS — is not harmful by nature. In fact, it can free up cognitive resources for more complex tasks.”
根据第三段中“They found that people in the “digital pioneer” generation who engaged more with digital technology did not have higher rates of cognitive decline. In fact, technology use was associated with lower rates of cognitive decline.(他们发现,“数字先驱”一代中更多接触数字技术的人,认知衰退的比例并未更高。
When people want to improve themselves, they usually try to do it directly through deliberate (故意的) habit building. ____16____ Hobbies are a great example of how purposeful activities can lead to natural self-improvement. Since better self-discipline is something many people struggle for, this article will focus on how hobbies can deliver that.
A good hobby can replace negative behaviors. Take Rob, who joins a Saturday rock-climbing group, as an example. To enjoy the trip, he naturally reduces heavy drinking on Friday nights. ____17____
Hobbies can create better routines. Any hobby requiring a new, positive routine will add structure to your life. For instance, having a dog establishes a daily walking habit. In this context, the key point isn’t anything to do with walking being healthy. It’s that the walking happens at the same time each day. ____18____
Hobbies build tolerance for physical efforts Sports or intense exercise helps us develop a better sense of what healthy physical efforts feel like. We learn to put up with feelings like increased heart rate without mistaking them for signs that something is wrong. ____19____ Research shows regular exercise relates to better discipline in household chores, spending and study habits.
____20____ If a hobby makes you see yourself as more responsible, more capable, or more invested in discipline, you’re more likely to develop those qualities. Consider hobbies involving leadership or teamwork. They can shift how you see your role in the world and encourage you to act accordingly.
Therefore, improving self-discipline doesn’t mean forcing yourself into a rigid model. It can be a natural result of finding a hobby you love and allowing it to shape you.
A. Hobbies can transform your self-concept.
B. Hobbies make you more capable than others.
C. Thus, hobbies help teach time management skills.
D. This tolerance can also be applied to other areas of life.
E. This routine creates a point of organization in your evenings.
F. However, self-improvement often occurs as a satisfying side effect.
G. In this case, the hobby replaces the unhealthy habit with a fulfilling one.
F 17. G 18. E 19. D 20. A
根据前文“When people want to improve themselves, they usually try to do it directly through deliberate (故意的) habit building.(人们想要提升自我时,通常会直接刻意养成习惯来达成目标。)”以及后文“Hobbies are a great example of how purposeful activities can lead to natural self-improvement.(爱好就是有目标的活动促成自然自我提升的典型例子。)”
根据前文“To enjoy the trip, he naturally reduces heavy drinking on Friday nights.(为了参与攀岩活动,他自然而然减少了周五晚上的酗酒行为。)”
根据前文“It’s that the walking happens at the same time each day.(重点在于每天都会在固定时间出门散步。)”
根据前文“We learn to put up with feelings like increased heart rate without mistaking them for signs that something is wrong.(我们学会忍受心跳加速这类身体感受,不会将其误认为身体出现异常。)”以及后文“Research shows regular exercise relates to better discipline in household chores, spending and study habits.(研究表明规律运动能提升人们在家务、消费和学习上的自律性。)”
根据后文“If a hobby makes you see yourself as more responsible, more capable, or more invested in discipline, you’re more likely to develop those qualities.(如果爱好让你认为自己更有责任心、更有能力、更懂得自律,你就更容易养成这些优良品质。)”

Mrs. Thompson, a retired teacher, was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine willingness to help others. Many high school students often turned to her for guidance and as her neighbor, me included.
One afternoon, feeling troubled and uncertain about my future after a disappointing exam,I decided to knock on Mrs. Thompson’s door.
“I don’t know what I’m doing with my life,” I admitted, my eyes fixed on the floor.“It feels like everyone else has it all figured out, and I’m just stuck.“ My voice trembled with sadness and a hint of fear.
I had bombed my last math test, and it felt like that failure stayed in every corner of my mind, increasing my anxiety about college examination and what I might want to pursue. While my friends seemed to advance effortlessly through their studies, I was struggling to stay afloat. The feeling that I was falling behind only deepened my sense of hopelessness.
Mrs. Thompson listened carefully, her face a picture of calm and understanding. Without saying much, she handed me a small tomato seedling (苗) in a pot. The tiny plant, with its delicate green leaves, seemed to symbolize a slight sign of hope.
”Let’s plant this in the garden,“ she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. But for a whole week, don’t focus on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.”
Every day, I faithfully watered the little seedling, as if I was putting my own hopes into it.I carefully ensured it got the right amount of sunlight, positioning it just so under the sun’s rays. With great self-control, I resisted the urge to examine it too closely. As the days went by, I felt a mix of eagerness and impatience, like a child waiting for a long-promised gift, longing to see some sign that my efforts were making a difference.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Paragraph one:

Paragraph two:
One day,as I bent down to water it, a tiny yellow flower caught my eye.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said to me a week later. With a heart full of anticipation, I followed her to the garden. When we reached the spot where we’d planted the seedling, I was amazed. The once - tiny plant had grown significantly. Its leaves were greener and more robust, and it stood taller, reaching towards the sky. Mrs. Thompson looked at me and smiled, “You see, just like this seedling, growth doesn’t always happen at a speed we can immediately notice. Your efforts in studying are like the care you gave this plant. They’re working, even if you can’t see the results right away.”
One day, as I bent down to water it, a tiny yellow flower caught my eye. A sense of joy and accomplishment washed over me. That little flower was a symbol of hope and proof that my care had paid off. It made me realize that just as the seedling needed time and consistent care to bloom, so did I in my studies. I no longer felt as lost or hopeless. From then on, I faced my study challenges with newfound confidence, knowing that with perseverance, my efforts would surely lead to beautiful “blooms” in my future.

A. To raise an issue. B. To describe a study.

C. The parent relies on the child for support. D. The child avoids setting any boundaries.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Distance ensures safety. B. Self-care is the final step.
C. Healing requires parental effort. D. Support exists beyond the family.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
