In first grade, I took a spelling test with the word “of” on it. O-F. “Of.” Every student that day spelled the word correctly except Malcolm, the slowest in the class. He had spelled the word U-V. “Uv.” I remember thinking “Geez, how silly is this kid?” But as I sat there, I realized that spelling “of” with a U and a V made a lot more sense than with an O and an F, which were corresponding to sounds nothing to do with the word “of”.
Why was this ever-so-simple word spelled in this completely illogical way? The best answer I could come up with at the time was: That’s just the way it is, that’s what adults told me was the truth, and that’s how I have to spell the word to get it right and be a good student. So I better just shut up, look smart, and use an O and an F.
I didn’t know it then, but this little realization was my first brush with an understanding of what indoctrination was. All of us in the class that day so quietly and without question accepted a truth because it was backed by authority and tradition. It was the rule, and the world would see Malcolm as silly, and not the spelling.
The spelling of “of” may not be a worthy battle to build a life around, but this memory helped me become aware of the fact that the world is a place that comes with a lot of strange rules that we often fail to question. As a teenager, I called these rules “uvisms”.
Growing up, I recognized the presence of these uvisms in the expectations and assumptions pressed on me by my surroundings. Many of them are there for good reasons. Many are not. You don’t have to follow all of them. I believe in the misspelling of the word “of” and the necessity for each generation to question the assumptions of the previous.
4. What did the author think of Malcolm’s spelling afterwards?
A. Reasonable. B. Childish. C. Creative. D. Casual.
5. What is the hidden reason for the author accepting the standard spelling?
A. Desire to outsmart others. B. Preference for logical spelling.
C. Obedience to established rules. D. Determination to uphold the truth.
6. What does the term “uvisms” mainly refer to?
A. Newly-generated creative concepts.
B. Widely-accepted illogical practices.
C. Intensely-debated spelling patterns.
D. Deeply-rooted childhood memories.
7. Which does the author try to advocate in the last paragraph?
A. Exploring the unknown. B. Tolerating minor mistakes.
C. Developing critical thinking. D. Following the extraordinary.
A 5. C 6. B 7. C
根据第一段“But as I sat there, I realized that spelling of with a U and a V made a lot more sense than with an O and an F, which were corresponding to sounds nothing to do with the word of (但当我坐在那里时,我意识到用U和V拼写of这个词,比用O和F要合理得多,因为O和F的发音与of这个词毫无关系)”可知,作者后来认为Malcolm的拼写是合理的。故选A。
根据第二段“The best answer I could come up with at the time was: That’s just the way it is, that’s what adults told me was the truth, and that’s how I have to spell the word to get it right and be a good student (当时我能想到的最好答案是:事情本来就是这样的,这是大人们告诉我的真相,我必须这样拼写才能写对,才能成为一个好学生)”以及第三段“All of us in the class that day so quietly and without question accepted a truth because it was backed by authority and tradition (那天班上的所有人都默默地、毫无质疑地接受了一个事实,因为它有权威和传统作为支撑)”可知,作者接受标准拼法的潜在原因是服从既定的规则。
根据第四段“The spelling of “of” may not be a worthy battle to build a life around, but this memory helped me become aware of the fact that the world is a place that comes with a lot of strange rules that we often fail to question. As a teenager, I called these rules “uvisms”(拼写“of”可能不是一场值得为之奋斗的事情,但这段记忆让我意识到,这个世界有很多奇怪的规则,我们经常无法质疑。十几岁时,我把这些规则称为“uvisms”)”可知,uvisms指的是那些被广泛接受但并不合理的惯例。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Many of them are there for good reasons. Many are not. You don’t have to follow all of them. I believe in the misspelling of the word of and the necessity for each generation to question the assumptions of the previous (这些规则中有许多存在是有充分理由的,也有许多并非如此。你不必遵守所有规则。我认同将of拼错的做法,也认为每一代人都有必要去质疑前人的固有认知)”可知,作者想要倡导的是培养批判性思维,敢于质疑既定规则。故选C。
C
At times our emotions can seem like unreasonable responses, but our brains have carefully evolved these mechanisms with just one target: keeping us alive. While we interpret different emotions as positive or negative, the most ancient parts of the human brain developed them on the principle that we must survive. We evolved emotions as a means of communicative function and as a way to help us navigate social interactions and our environment safely: they are designed to protect us. Our fear responses were originally a survival strategy that warned us of potential dangers, such as our inborn unease around spiders and snakes. Then there is the feeling of disgust, which warns us of foods or other substances that may be dangerous.
Our other emotions are responses to social interactions that keep us part of a group. We are fundamentally a social species, and throughout our evolution have relied on our tribe to help us survive by working together to find food and shelter. Anger is a response to perceived social threats or a signal of dominance; pride can help us to boost our social status, while shame is intended to decrease our standing within a group. These emotions maintain the social balance of our tribe — who we follow, who we trust, who we care about.
The fundamental emotions that motivate us individually are almost always sadness and happiness. Sadness results from loss, and serves the biological purpose of motivating a person to recover that loss, whether it is a young child searching for their mother in a supermarket or someone trying hard to get a new job after being dismissed. But the ultimate human emotion is happiness, and we are all in search of it. When you’re sitting around a campfire, safe in the countryside with some close friends and good food, you feel happiness because you have found the resources that your primitive brain is seeking.
The next time you sit in an airport departure lounge, look for the emotions. Our bodies have created these experiences — the tears as we say goodbye, the smiles and laughter as we are reunited — for the purpose of keeping us alive. Our emotions and feelings are fundamentally what make us human, but this means we’re in for a bit of a roller coaster along the way.
8. What does the author say about emotions?
A. They appear illogical at times. B. They developed to ensure our survival.
C. They are viewed as either good or bad. D. They signal threats from certain substances.
9. According to the text, when does happiness occur?
A. When people's emotional needs are met. B. When we recover from a painful loss.
C. When people get along with their group. D. When our ancient brain gets what it wants.
10. Why does the author mention "roller coaster" in the last paragraph?
A. To show that emotions are unpredictable. B. To stress emotions are hard to control.
C. To explain the ups and downs of emotions. D. To describe the exciting nature of emotions.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Purpose Behind Our Feelings B. How Emotions Shape Our Lives
C. The Social Nature of Emotions D. Emotions: Protection or More?
B 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据第一段中的“At times our emotions can seem like unreasonable responses, but our brains have carefully evolved these mechanisms with just one target: keeping us alive. While we interpret different emotions as positive or negative, the most ancient parts of the human brain developed them on the principle that we must survive. We evolved emotions as a means of communicative function and as a way to help us navigate social interactions and our environment safely: they are designed to protect us.(有时我们的情绪似乎是不合理的反应,但我们的大脑已经仔细地进化了这些机制,只有一个目标:让我们活着。虽然我们将不同的情绪解释为积极或消极,但人类大脑最古老的部分是基于我们必须生存的原则发展起来的。我们进化出的情绪是一种交流功能,也是帮助我们安全地驾驭社交互动和环境的一种方式:它们旨在保护我们)”可知,作者明确指出情绪进化的唯一目标是保证我们存活,它们是用来保护我们的。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“When you’re sitting around a campfire, safe in the countryside with some close friends and good food, you feel happiness because you have found the resources that your primitive brain is seeking.(当你坐在篝火旁,与一些亲密的朋友和美味的食物安全地呆在乡下时,你会感到幸福,因为你找到了原始大脑正在寻找的资源)”可知,当人们身处安全环境、与朋友共享美食时感到快乐,是因为找到了原始大脑所寻求的资源。
根据最后一段“Our emotions and feelings are fundamentally what make us human, but this means we’re in for a bit of a roller coaster along the way.(我们的情绪和感受从根本上使我们成为人类,但这意味着我们一路上会有点过山车)”可知,作者用“roller coaster”比喻情绪如同过山车一样有高有低、起伏不定,这是作为人类必然要经历的情感体验。
A项“The Purpose Behind Our Feelings(我们感情背后的目的)”准确概括了这一主旨。故选A。
D
Many farmers across the western African nation of Gabon share the same dissatisfaction: waking up to damaged crops after nighttime break-ins by hungry forest elephants. But some elephants aren’t just after tasty snacks. The animals often seek out only the stems and leaves of banana and papaya plants and abandon the nutritious fruit, which lies broken on the ground. “That makes farmers even angrier, because they can’t understand why they just damage the fruits and don’t eat them,” says Steeve Ngama, a conservation scientist at Gabon’s National Center for Scientific and Technological Research.
But why would elephants skip the fruit? Southeast Asian forest elephants eat certain plants as self-medication when they are ill. And banana and papaya leaves are known to have medicinal effects. Ngama wondered whether Gabonese farms are not just food sources for elephants but also “pharmacies”.
Together with other scientists, Ngama has now found evidence for this idea. Published in Ecological Solutions and Evidence, their study reports that African forest elephants are more likely to choose banana and papaya plants when suffering from gut parasites Between 2016 and 2017, the researchers collected elephant dung (粪便) and plant samples in Crystal Mountains National Park. Lab analysis showed that infected elephants were 16 percent more likely to eat banana stems and leaves and 25 percent more likely to feed on papaya plants.
However, other scientists think more research is needed. Elodie Freymann, a postdoctoral researcher, notes that crop-damaging elephants might simply carry more parasites because they stay close to humans. Still, she believes the study is an important step in understanding elephants’ self-medicating behavior. Researchers also note that banana and papaya contain chemicals that fight parasites, and elephants may learn to seek medicinal plants by taste and pass the knowledge to family members.
Ngama hopes the findings will reduce conflicts between elephants and farmers. Farmers in Gabon often kill elephants that destroy crops. But providing elephants with alternative treatments, such as mineral salts, might keep them away from farms. The study could also change people’s opinions of elephants and help discover new medicines for humans. Observing how elephants treat diseases like Ebola might even solve difficult medical problems that humans face now.
12. What annoys Gabon’s farmers most about elephant attacks?
A. Elephants feed on their best harvest crops.
B. Elephants damage fruits in a pointless way.
C. Night activities of elephants ruin local farming.
D. Frequent animal raids reduce farm income.
13. What can be concluded from Ngama’s research findings?
A. Elephants’ food choices are affected by physical conditions.
B. Tropical crops possess widespread medical functions.
C. Sick elephants rely totally on farm plants to recover.
D. Gut parasites force elephants to give up sweet fruits.
14. Why does the author mention Elodie Freymann?
A. To stress human influence on plant selection.
B. To prove the study’s data is totally wrong.
C. To present objective doubts about the finding.
D. To offer new evidence for self-medication.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. An effective way to reduce human-elephant conflicts.
B. A different view on wild animals’ living behaviors.
C. A medical secret of common tropical fruit plants.
D. A new explanation for elephants’ crop-damaging acts.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第一段中“The animals often seek out only the stems and leaves of banana and papaya plants and abandon the nutritious fruit, which lies broken on the ground. “That makes farmers even angrier, because they can’t understand why they just damage the fruits and don’t eat them,” (这些动物常常只寻找香蕉和木瓜植物的茎和叶,而丢弃营养丰富的果实,让它们破碎地躺在地上。“这让农民更加愤怒,因为他们无法理解为什么大象只是毁坏果实却不吃它们。”)”可知,加蓬农民对大象袭击最恼火的是大象毫无意义地破坏果实。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Together with other scientists, Ngama has now found evidence for this idea. Published in Ecological Solutions and Evidence, their study reports that African forest elephants are more likely to choose banana and papaya plants when suffering from gut parasites. (现在,Ngama和其他科学家一起为这个想法找到了证据。他们发表在《生态解决方案与证据》上的研究报告称,非洲森林象在患有肠道寄生虫时更有可能选择香蕉和木瓜植物)”和“Lab analysis showed that infected elephants were 16 percent more likely to eat banana stems and leaves and 25 percent more likely to feed on papaya plants. (实验室分析显示,受感染的大象吃香蕉茎和叶子的可能性增加了16%,吃木瓜植物的可能性增加了25%)”可知,Ngama的研究发现大象的食物选择受到身体状况的影响。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“However, other scientists think more research is needed. Elodie Freymann, a postdoctoral researcher, notes that crop-damaging elephants might simply carry more parasites because they stay close to humans. (然而,其他科学家认为需要更多的研究。博士后研究员Elodie Freymann指出,破坏庄稼的大象可能只是因为它们靠近人类而携带了更多的寄生虫)”可知,作者提到Elodie Freymann是为了呈现对该研究发现存在的客观质疑。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“Many farmers across the western African nation of Gabon share the same dissatisfaction: waking up to damaged crops after nighttime break-ins by hungry forest elephants. (西非国家加蓬的许多农民都有同样的不满:在饥饿的森林象夜间闯入后,醒来发现庄稼被毁)”、第三段“African forest elephants are more likely to choose banana and papaya plants when suffering from gut parasites (肠道寄生虫). (非洲森林象在患有肠道寄生虫时更有可能选择香蕉和木瓜植物)”和第四段“Researchers also note that banana and papaya contain chemicals that fight parasites, and elephants may learn to seek medicinal plants by taste and pass the knowledge to family members. (研究人员还指出香蕉和木瓜含有对抗寄生虫的化学物质,大象可能学会通过味道寻找药用植物,并将这一知识传给家庭成员)”可知,文章主要解释了为什么大象会破坏农作物——不是因为饥饿,而是因为它们可能利用香蕉和木瓜等植物的药用价值来自我治疗疾病。文章为大象破坏作物行为提供了一种新的解释。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

【答案】16. B 17. A 18. C 19. F 20. D
根据上文“Some creators focus on bright and hopeful future filled with convenience devices and harmonious communities.(一些创作者则着眼于一个充满便利设备和和谐社区的光明而充满希望的未来)”可知,前文提到Some creators(一些创作者)描绘光明的未来,A选项“而另一些人则描绘出一幅关于未来的阴暗且令人担忧的画面”中Others, by contrast...(相反,另一些创作者...)
根据后文“Many cutting-edge scientists admit that their early research ambitions were inspired by vivid futuristic descriptions in classic sci-fi stories. Creative imagination in sci-fi often paves the way for later scientific breakthroughs.(许多顶尖科学家都承认,他们早期的研究抱负是受到经典科幻故事中生动的未来场景描述所激发的。科幻作品中的创新想象往往为后来的科学突破铺平了道路)”可知,后文提到科学家的研究雄心受科幻启发、科幻想象推动科学突破,核心讲科幻的激励作用,C选项“科幻的激励力量绝不能被低估”概括了本段主旨,符合。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Sci-fi also helps people rethink complex human nature in extreme outer-space environments. When facing mysterious alien civilizations, humans have to stick to moral bottom lines and seek wise ways to coexist peacefully.(科幻作品还能帮助人们重新审视在极端的外太空环境中复杂的人性问题。当面对神秘的外星文明时,人类必须坚守道德底线,并寻求和平共处的明智方法)”可知,前文提到科幻在“外太空环境、外星文明”的设定中讨论人类道德底线,F选项“这种虚构设定为现实中的道德选择提供了宝贵经验”中,Such fictional settings指代前文的太空/外星设定,也呼应了moral话题,衔接正确。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Unlike ordinary literary works that mostly focus on realistic current social life, sci-fi shifts our sight to the unknown future and the boundless vast universe.(与大多数侧重于描绘现实当下社会生活的普通文学作品不同,科幻作品将我们的视线引向了未知的未来以及无边无际的浩瀚宇宙)”以及后文“It keeps urging human beings to move forward reasonably on the road of technological progress.(它不断激励着人类在技术进步的道路上合理地前行)”可知,前文提到科幻不聚焦当下现实,转向未来和宇宙,D选项“它传递超越时间、空间和文化边界的普世价值”承接上文,引出后文“推动人类在科技道路上合理前行”的总结,逻辑通顺。

短语be aimed at表示“旨在……”。
主语the rise是单数,所以谓语动词用has emerged。

I’m Li Hua, a student from your Chinese partner school. I’m writing to recommend adding a Tang Poetry Appreciation column to your school website.
Tang poetry is a shining pearl in Chinese literature. Learning Tang poetry can help your students better understand Chinese history, customs and values. Moreover, it can improve their Chinese proficiency and appreciation of literature with its refined language and charming rhythm. As for the column content, it’s suggested that besides introducing some classic Tang poems, the famous poets’ life stories and detailed explanations of the poems should be included. Audio recordings of poems are also an effective way to help with pronunciation.

The morning sun spilled soft gold across the winding roads, painting long shadows that stretched like fingers pointing toward the horizon. Patrick guided the camper (露营车) out of their quiet village while Evelyne sat beside him, one hand resting on the small carrier (宠物箱) in her lap, the other holding her phone. Through the window, she filmed the vineyards rolling by like green rivers.
“Say hi to everyone,” asked Evelyne, turning the camera toward Patrick. Then she turned the phone toward the carrier. Inside, Filou — a tiny ball of black and white fur with curious green eyes — meowed (喵喵叫) softly at every passing bird.
She posted the video later that morning, adding a few simple words: “Road trip: ON.” Within minutes, comments began to appear. Her followers — over three thousand of them — loved these small glimpses into her life. Among the likes and emojis, one comment caught her attention: “Cats are born curious explorers!” Evelyne smiled and slipped her phone back into her pocket, never knowing what would happen next.
Filou was barely a year old, full of energy and curiosity. He pressed his nose against the glass of the car window, eager to explore the world outside. Each time a tree cast its shadow across the window, he would tilt (倾斜) his head. Each time a bird flew over the sky, he would fix his eyes on it. “He never misses a thing,” Patrick said, glancing at the rearview mirror.
After hours of driving, they stopped at a rest area. Stepping out of the camper, they smelt the aroma (香气) of coffee.
“Let’s grab a coffee, shall we?” Patrick suggested. Evelyne nodded.
“See you in a minute,” she kissed Filou goodbye on the head and ran to her husband, leaving the passenger window open a crack to let in fresh air. They walked into the small cafe and enjoyed the peaceful afternoon.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
When they returned to the camper, the carrier was empty.

The next morning, she received a comment below her post.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When they returned to the camper, the carrier was empty. Evelyne’s heart sank instantly, and she called Filou’s name frantically. Patrick checked around the camper, while she ran along the rest area, her eyes scanning every corner. They asked the cafe staff for help, but no one had seen the tiny cat. Evelyne felt tears welling up, blaming herself for leaving the window open. They searched until dusk, calling Filou’s name, but there was no response. Heartbroken, they had to stay at the rest area for the night, hoping he would come back.
The next morning, she received a comment below her post. It read: “I saw a black and white cat near the rest area yesterday! He followed me to my farm, and he’s safe now.” Evelyne’s hands shook as she replied, asking for the farm’s address. They rushed there immediately, and when they called Filou’s name, the tiny cat ran toward them, meowing happily. Tears of joy streamed down Evelyne’s face as she held him tightly. She later posted a photo of Filou, thanking her follower, and realized that kindness and connection could turn a disaster into a blessing.
