Like many ABCs(American-born Chinese)
and young Chinese immigrants(移民),sisters
Sarah and Kaitlin Leung took great interest in
Chinese food after they'd grown up,but found it
really hard to learn how to prepare it.There was
such a“gap”,as Sarah puts it,.compared with
Western recipes(菜谱)presented on TVs or
blogs.
As it turns out, though, the Leungs have
right positions to do something about this.Bill,
the father, had spent years cooking beef at his
family's Chinese American restaurant.Judy,the
mom,was born and raised in Shanghai and had
deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese
cooking.Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up
in the New Jersey country, eating their parents'
food, but also growing in American food culture.
So,in 2013,the Leungs started a blog called
The Woks of Life.Different from other food blogs,
it's intergenerational heritage(代际传承)cooking
culture-The four family members took turns
posting recipes, each sharing their own favorites
with their area of expert knowledge.
Kaitlin says that The Woks of Life follows a
long line of pioneers-like Joyce Chen,Martin
Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring
·79·
Chinese home cooking into the US and got more
attention."We feel excited we've made a
meaningful mark over these years, explaining that
there is a huge need for these recipes in the US,"
she says."It's about the gap,yes,but there's also
a huge need.Asian Americans look to reconnect
with the food of their heritage."
"Five years ago,you wouldn't have been able
to find a ton of Chinese recipes in The New York
Times,”Kaitlin says.“Now you can find them
from blogs like The Woks of Life.

Using filters(滤镜)is very popular among
young people on social media.Filters can make
people look much better and add lots of fun.But
TikTok is making some big changes.
In November 2024,TikTok said that users
under 18 can't use beauty filters that change their
faces in ways that normal makeup(化妆)cant.
Don't worry, though!Filters like animal ears that
just make you laugh are still okay.
Why are these changes happening?According
to the BBC,beauty filters can be bad for people's
mental(心理)health.A group from the UK
called 5Rights found that 34%of girls between 11
and 21 years old won't post a photo without editing
(编辑)their looks..Another report by Dove,a
beauty company, showed that 48%of girls who
often edit their photos feel bad about their bodies.
Seeing these perfect, edited pictures all the time
makes it hard for young people to know what is
real. They might start to think that these edited
looks are normal, and this can change how they
see themselves and the world.
Jessica Chalmers,an expert on online child
safety,said TikTok's action is“a good start'”
The new rule only works when users tell
TikTok their real ages. But not all the users under
18 have done this. So,TikTok is trying out some
smart technology. It looks at things like "happy
birthday"messages to guess users'ages.
5.What kind of filters can't users under 18 use on
TikTok?
A.Filters that add special shapes to faces.
B.Filters that make photos more colorful.
C.Filters like animal ears that just make users
laugh.
D.Beauty filters that change faces while makeup
can't.
6.How many girls aged 11-21 often edit photos
before posting?
A.48%B.50%C.34%D.21%
7.Why is TikTok using smart technology?
A.To find out whether users are under 18.
B.To make the app run faster.
C.To make more beautiful filters.
D.To check if users'photos are real.
8.【标题归纳题】Which of the following is the

A.Why Young People Love Filters
B.How Filters Hurt Young People
C.TikTok Stops Some Filters for Teens
D.New Technology to Find Users'Ages

【新情境】Moving

租房
or work often means

renting
a house.
However,rental issues
like unfair deposits(押金)or unsafe living
conditions can be tricky. To solve these problems,
China has introduced new Housing Rental
Regulations, which will take effect on September
15,2025.1.
First,the rules focus on safety.2.
For example,kitchens,bathrooms,and balconies
non-living spaces)can't be rented as homes.
Landlords(房东)must also check that the house
is in good condition before renting it out. This
ensures renters live in a safe environment.
今
Both landlords and tenants
must use their real names when signing a
rental contract. The contract must then be filed
online with the local housing authority through a
government platform. This step makes the process
transparent(透明的)and prevents fraud(欺诈).
Next,landlords have clear duties too.
They must show tenants their ID and
property ownership documents.Also,entering the
rented house without the tenant's permission is not
allowed.If a deposit is collected,the contract
must state the amount,return time,and
conditions for keeping it.
Last, tenants should follow rules as well.
5.
They must not damage furniture or
fixtures and should obey building rules, such as
keeping quiet at night. If there's a problem with
the house, they need to tell the landlord or
property manager.
These new regulations aim to create a fairer
rental market.By protecting both landlords'and
tenants'rights,they make renting a more
trustworthy experience for everyone.
A.They need to use the house safely.
B.These rules bring many changes to the rental
process.
C.It's important for tenants to read the contract
carefully.
D.Second,the rules standardize rental contracts.
E.They must prepare the house for renters in
advance.
F.Safety is the most important thing for renters.

Shanghai began its fight against indoor
smoking some years ago.The city has now taken
further action. It aims to stop people smoking in
outdoor public spaces.
On December 11,the local
government passed new rules for this.
It lists some anti-smoking measures
(禁烟措施).Several types of public
禁止吸烟
NO SMOKING
spaces are required to carry them out
·82·
Take tourist sites(景点)and restaurants
across the city for example. They will have to add
anti-smoking signs to waiting areas. They need to
train their responsible workers to help with the
work. These workers will carry out the duty to
remind people to avoid smoking.
Metro stations(地铁站)must also set up“no
smoking”signs outside all entrances(入口).
Workers inside the station will have to pay much
attention to its public areas. This is to make sure
that passengers follow the rules.
The city will also organize a team of
volunteers to help with the anti-smoking work.
Shanghai wants to turn itself into a smoke-
free city.It has a three-step plan for this.It began
with stopping indoor smoking. Now the second
step is to stop smoking in outdoor public spaces.
Finally,it will only allow smoking in a small
number of areas. Therefore,I hope all the
smokers can give up smoking for themselves and
also for the people around them.
