What do the following places have in common: the Serengeti Desert, Edinburgh’s Old Town and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve?
The Serengeti Desert is in Tanzania and Kenya, Africa. It contains thousands of kilometers of dry grasslands and many rare kinds of animals.
Edinburgh’s Old Town is in the capital city of Scotland. It has many old buildings and streets. There are very few new buildings in Edinburgh’s Old Town.
The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is near Mexico City in Mexico. It has beautiful flowers and forests. It is also the home of millions of butterflies in the winter.
These three places are very different. But they are all under special protection by UNESCO . They are World Heritage Sites.
The story of World Heritage Sites begins more than 3,000 years ago. At that time, the great king of Egypt built many temples. But after thousands of years, sand covered them.
Stories tell of a young boy named Abu Simbel who found the temples. One day, Abu Simbel saw something under the sand. Soon, the ancient temples of Ramses Ⅱwere officially rediscovered. But they were not safe. The government of Egypt planned to build a dam on the Nile River. It would create a large lake, which would cover the temples in water.
Many people did not want the temples destroyed. UNESCO agreed and raised 40 million dollars from around the world to save the temples. From 1964 to 1968, engineers took the temples apart in many pieces and rebuilt them hundreds of meters back from the Nile River. Today, they are called the Abu Simbel Temples, in memory of the young boy who first found them.
The effort to save the Abu Simbel Temples was a success. So in 1972, UNESCO formed the World Heritage Committee, which protects places on the earth that are of great cultural or natural value.
Any country in the world can ask for protection from UNESCO. The countries send a list of places to the World Heritage Committee. Once a year, the World Heritage Committee meets and votes on which places to protect. When they choose a place, it officially becomes a World Heritage Site.

An elderly woman was successfully rescued by a Chinese rescue team from hospital ruins in Myanmar’s capital, Nay Pyi Daw, on Sunday morning, after the serious earthquake struck on Friday. “When she was carried onto a stretcher by rescuers, everyone there was excited,” said Mu Shuyuan, from China’s Yunnan province rescue and medical team.
At Ottara Thiri Private Hospital, a three-story building was severely damaged, with the ground floor completely collapsed. Using a sign of life detector, Mu’s team located a survivor trapped under the collapsed floor. A 73-year-old woman was trapped in a narrow space between the second and first floors. Mu’s deputy Xiao Min crawled in the rubble (瓦砾), shone a flashlight in the space and called out loudly in Mandarin with a Guizhou accent, “Don’t be afraid. We are here to rescue you!” Realizing a language barrier, Xiao immediately called for a translator to communicate the message, and a faint response was heard emanating from deep within the debris (碎片).
Due to the complex environment, they made a rescue plan along with local emergency workers. “During the rescue process, we had to consider that drilling vibrations might cause concrete blocks to fall, causing secondary harm to the trapped individuals. Avoiding this harm was the most challenging.” Xiao said.
After drilling two access holes, they still could not reach the woman, then drilled a third hole, which enabled them to remove the bodies of two dead people on top of the woman. At 4:56am on Sunday, after being trapped for nearly 40 hours, she was successfully rescued. “Make sure to lift steadily and slowly” Xiao repeatedly instructed those carrying the stretcher. When she was safely placed in an ambulance, he let out a sigh of relief.

The “hedgehog (刺猬) dilemma” is a famous metaphor from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. In his 1851 book, he described how humans struggle with relationships through a story about hedgehogs. His advice was simple: keep your distance.
This sad story became widely discussed. Sigmund Freud and modern scientists studied this idea. In 2015, an award-winning short film called Hedgehog retold this story.
How does this apply to real life? Most people remember being hurt by close relationships – broken friendships, family conflicts, or romantic betrayals. Since these connections matter deeply, their damage hurts more. Should we stop trusting others? Schopenhauer said yes, but science would say otherwise.
A study in PLOS Medicine reviewing 148 studies with over 300,000 people found those with strong social connections live 50% longer. The National Institute on Aging warns that loneliness harms health as much as smoking 15 cigarettes daily – making Schopenhauer’s advice concerning.
When hurt repeatedly, people often fall into defense mode. Relationship expert Hilary Sanders explains common defense behaviors: going silent during arguments, seeing normal comments as criticism, or overreacting to small issues. These reactions often start in childhood. If parents often criticized or classmates bullied someone, they might develop habits like pretending not to care or getting angry easily. While these helped survive childhood pain, they cause problems in adult relationships when used unconsciously.
The good news is people can change. Through therapy, many learn to recognize their defense patterns and understand their origins. Couples can improve relationships by learning each other’s emotional triggers and responding thoughtfully instead of arguing. However, Sanders warns that defenses shouldn’t be removed suddenly — it’s like taking down a wall brick by brick.
Although Schopenhauer focused on the pain of closeness, the hedgehog story actually shows our deep need for connection. Unlike real hedgehogs, humans aren’t born with physical spines. By carefully lowering our defenses around trustworthy people, we might truly enjoy both warmth and safety in relationships.
28.Why does the author mention the hedgehog dilemma in paragraph 1?
A.To stress its importance. B.To support Schopenhauer’s advice.
C.To recommend Schopenhauer’s book. D.To introduce the theme of relationship.
29.What is Schopenhauer’s key solution to the “hedgehog dilemma”?
A.Ignore pain. B.Seek therapy.
C.Avoid closeness. D.Build walls.
30.What major evidence goes against Schopenhauer’s advice?
A.Freud’s studies. B.Long life from social ties.
C.Henry’s short film. D.Defense behavior of people.
31.What does Sanders say about close connection?
A.People should make gradual progress in it.
B.Humans can benefit from it unconsciously.
C.It can help children relieve childhood pain.
D.Couples should learn to defend it thoughtfully.
D
A heritage language is a language that isn’t the “most powerful” language of an area, but is still learned by children in their homes (thus, it’s their heritage). Any language can be a heritage language, depending on the surrounding social context. English, for example, is often a primary language, but could technically be a heritage language if someone’s English-speaking parents moved from, say, the United Kingdom to Japan
Heritage languages can be someone’s native language, but the two terms aren’t interchangeable. A native language is the language or languages a person learns when they’re very young while heritage languages can be determined by a broad range of social and cultural factors. Usually, people speak their native language very well. Someone’s abilities in their heritage language can vary quite a bit, however. Some people may master it well because they learned it a lot when they were children, while others may speak it but not read it, and still others may struggle with speaking it at all.
The United States has over 56 million Spanish speakers, and a large part of those are heritage learners of the language. A research found that the percentage of people who report speaking Spanish “well” drops from 91 to 82 for first-and second-generation immigrants (移民). While that might seem small, it gets much more obvious after that, with third-and fourth-generation immigrants dropping to 47 percent.
There are a couple of reasons why heritage languages — and Spanish in particular — tends to drop off from generation to generation. The first one is that the heritage language is less important to get around in society. When a person needs the majority language to go to school, get a job and interact with most people around them, it’s not surprising that the heritage language might seem less important. Another reason is some parents encourage their children not to use their heritage language. It’s unfortunate but true that speaking another language is still a cause for discrimination (歧视) today.
Heritage languages may have a hard time lasting from generation to generation, but it’s not only a story of decline (衰弱). There are countless people in the world who go out of their way to learn their heritage languages — some learn the heritage language later in life — and help others to do the same. If you’ve ever thought about reconnecting with a heritage language, it’s never too late to get started. There’s no time like the present.
32.How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A.By mentioning an expert. B.By explaining a term (术语).
C.By describing a scene. D.By providing figures.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The importance of learning heritage languages when little.
B.The variations in people’s abilities to speak heritage languages.
C.The differences between heritage languages and native languages.
D.The similarities between the broad range of social and cultural factors.
34.What is one reason for the drop of Heritage languages in the US?
A.Appearance discrimination B.Generation gap.
C.Varying cultures. D.Losing popularity.
35.What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.Parents play a key role in protecting heritage languages.
B.Heritage languages’ difficult time will end in the near future.
C.Efforts have been made towards the heritage languages’ survival.
D.Some people consider it too late to bring heritage languages back to life.

Ice climbing is a lot like rock climbing, but it’s done on ice using special tools. For years, ice climbing was just another part of rock climbing and other mountaineering activities. Whenever climbers reached an icy area on the mountain, they had to move across the ice in order to continue upward. 36
Due to the conditions in which ice climbing typically takes place, it is considered an extreme sport. Ice climbers have to be outdoors in sub-zero temperatures for long periods of time. 37 However, such risks only add to the delight of climbing on ice.
38 There’s something special in climbing sports, which is impermanent and unique. When the temperature drops and the climbing routes come into season, climbers are filled with excitement. They get their best equipment and go. When everything comes together, the results are magical.
There are many barriers that would-be ice climbers face when they get into the adventure. For a start, there’s the equipment and clothing to consider, all of which aren’t cheap. 39 You’re lucky if you live in an area with regular snowfall, while if you live in Florida, you’ve got a long journey if you want to get into ice climbing.
The best way to begin your ice-climbing journey is to book a day or two with a qualified instructor to show you techniques. 40 This will allow you to experience ice climbing without costing too much. You’ll also likely have to bring your own warm clothing, like a quality down jacket, to protect yourself from the cold.
A.Then, the locations matter.
B.Ice climbers typically work together.

D.Besides, they may encounter extreme weather.

【原文】M: Playing volleyball helps relieve stress and anxiety. I played it with my brother yesterday. It’s so interesting!
W: Wow! You are really a sports lover. I spent a lot of time playing volleyball but I’m still not good at it.
2.C
【原文】W: Have you heard anything about that office job you applied for?
M: No, but I only sent the letter a week ago. I wouldn’t expect a call back yet. I’ll email the company if I haven’t heard anything by next week.
3.C
【原文】M: Eventually, you’ll be old like me, Helen. Now, you have less responsibility, so enjoy it.
W: That’s true, Grandpa. I’m just stressed about my grades and school friends.
M: All students do. Just try to enjoy your work and don’t worry.
4.C
【原文】W: Did you return the scissors to Mrs. Johnson, Tom?
M: No, I was preparing for the speech competition and I forgot all about it!
W: OK, I’ll go next door right away. Hopefully, your speech will win everybody over.
5.C
【原文】W: John, are you going straight home after school this afternoon?
M: No, I won’t finish my class until one o’clock. And after that I’m going to spend two hours at the library before going home.

【原文】A: We should do our shopping today, Cameron. Your birthday is tomorrow and we need to get some food for the party.
B: What should we get?
A: Let’s cook chicken and we can get some salad and potatoes too.
B: Oh, we are not celebrating Thanksgiving Day and it seems like a lot of work for us.
A: We can do it all in the morning.
B: But Lily, why don’t we order some pizza and chips?
A: Oh, we are not preparing for a picnic.
B: But it would be easier for us.
A: OK.

【原文】W: Hey, remember the moment Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the Olympic gold in the women’s high jump that summer? She was such an inspiration!
M: She was. But it’s not that high when you compare human achievements to animals’. A program says that pumas (美洲狮) are incredible high jumpers. One was recorded jumping 7 meters high from a standing position! That’s 7 times its own body height! The record for humans is just 2.45 meters!
W: Wow! I know that when Javier Sotomayor made that incredible jump in 1993, the whole world was shocked, and the record still stands after all these years.
M: That’s right, and Mike Powell broke the long jump world record in 1991 when he jumped a distance of 8.95 meters. But kangaroos can jump 9 meters!
W: Amazing!
M: That’s not all. Some tiny insects can jump almost 0.5 meters. If we compare this to a human’s size, it’s like a person jumping over New York’s Empire State Building!

【原文】Today, I’m going to tell you something about manners in different countries. I think you already know that people in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something that is rude in one country may well be quite polite in another. For example, in Britain you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth and you’d better not make a noise when you are having some liquid food. But in Japan, you needn’t worry about making a noise when you drink it, it shows that you are enjoying it. In Britain, you try not to put your hands on the table at all during a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. But it is in the Arab countries that you really must be careful with your hands. You see, in the Arab countries, you mustn’t eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So what should you do if you visit another country? Well, you needn’t worry. You can ask the native people there to help you, or just watch carefully and try to do as they do, not as you do at home.

【原文】W: Mr Brown, what important festivals do you have in your country apart from the ones that I’ve known?
M: Early May Bank Holiday, Spring Bank Holiday, Summer Bank Holiday and so on. These are all public holidays celebrated throughout the UK. We also have Shakespeare Day, but it isn’t a public holiday.
W: Why are there so many days called bank holidays?
M: Originally, these were the days on which the banks were closed. Now, most businesses and non-essential services like banks close on these days.
W: What about Shakespeare Day?
M: It’s a holiday for fans and enthusiasts of William Shakespeare.
W: When is the holiday?
M: It falls on April 23 each year.
W: How do people celebrate the day?
M: Well, there are many different kinds of celebrations, People can watch a Shakespeare-inspired movie, pick a speech or passage to memorize, or meet with other Shakespeare fans and share their favorite Shakespeare moments with each other.
W: Do you celebrate this holiday every year?
