Passage 2
Alternatives to plastic straws — What’s that straw made of?
Plastic straws may seem harmless, but they pose a danger to the environment. Because they’re so small, they easily find their way into the ocean. There they can harm animals that try to eat them. They may be small, but the millions of plastic straws that are used and discarded daily add up to a huge problem. What can you use instead of plastic straws?
Bamboo straws
Fast-growing and plentiful, bamboo stalks are ideal for making drinking straws. Multiple companies now produce bamboo straws, often without the use of chemicals. Bamboo straws can be washed in a dishwasher or by hand and used again and again. When they do wear out, they break down easily.
Glass straws
Glass straws can also be reused, and if they’re clear, it’s easy to see if they’re clean or not. Some companies make bent glass straws, which means you don’t have to tip your glass to drink with them. They are available in a variety of lengths, colors and widths, so consumers have many options to choose from.
Metal straws
Straws made of metal last a very long time and are easy to clean. Steel is the most common variety, but those willing to pay more can get titanium or silver straws.
Bottles that come with straws
Many water bottles come equipped with built-in straws. Although that straw may be made of plastic, you keep it and use it repeatedly. That means it probably won’t end up in a landfill or the ocean any time soon. Water bottles can also replace disposable cups, which cuts down on waste even more. And they can be economical if you choose to fill the bottles with water rather than buying drinks.
No straw
For many drinks, straws aren’t required; people can drink straight out of a cup. And businesses can cut down on the number of straws they use by simply asking people if they want one. Many people scarcely notice whether they have a straw or not.
Plastic straws are far from the only way to enjoy your favorite drink. Giving them up is an easy way to help take care of our planet.
30.According to the passage, which one is the main reason for different alternatives to plastic straws?
A.market requirement B.consumption preference
C.price factor D.environmental concern
31.According to the passage, which one of the following statements is correct?
A.You can wash bamboo straws only by hand.
B.There are various shapes of glass straws.
C.Titanium or silver straws are valueless.
D.Straws are not necessary for all drinks.
32.What’s the author’s attitude to bottles that come with straws?
A.doubtful B.critical C.disappointed D.unclear
根据第一段“Plastic straws may seem harmless, but they pose a danger to the environment. Because they’re so small, they easily find their way into the ocean. There they can harm animals that try to eat them. They may be small, but the millions of plastic straws that are used and discarded daily add up to a huge problem.(塑料吸管可能看起来无害,但它们对环境构成危险。因为它们很小,所以很容易进入海洋。在那里,它们可以伤害试图吃掉它们的动物。它们可能很小,但每天使用和丢弃的数百万塑料吸管加起来是一个巨大的问题)”可知,塑料吸管会对环境造成危害,所以这是塑料吸管的不同替代品出现的主要原因。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“For many drinks, straws aren’t required; people can drink straight out of a cup.(许多饮料不需要吸管;人们可以直接用杯子喝)”可知,并非所有饮料都需要吸管。故选D。
根据第一段“What can you use instead of plastic straws?(你可以用什么来代替塑料吸管?)”以及Bottles that come with straws部分“Many water bottles come equipped with built-in straws. Although that straw may be made of plastic, you keep it and use it repeatedly. That means it probably won’t end up in a landfill or the ocean any time soon.(许多水瓶都配有内置吸管。虽然那根吸管可能是塑料做的,但你要保留它并反复使用。这意味着它可能不会很快进入垃圾填埋场或海洋)”可知,作者将带吸管的瓶子介绍为代替塑料吸管的一种方式,认可它的作用,但强调要保留瓶子中的吸管并反复使用,由此可推知,作者对于带吸管的瓶子的态度是批判性的。故选B。
Passage 3
Millions of tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste, is produced ever year. In 2016, the world’s population make 49 million tons of electronic waste. It has been calculated that there will be more than 60 million tons by 2021. The amount of electronic waste is growing so rapidly that it has become a global problem that needs to be addressed.
What is causing the upsurge(激增)in e-waste? Technology is becoming more and more widespread, covering almost every aspect of our lives. Meanwhile, the lifespan of devices is getting shorter— many products will be thrown away once their batteries(电池)die, to be replaced by new devices. Companies update the design or software so quickly and it is usually cheaper and easier to buy a new product than to repair an old one. Since prices are falling, electronic devices are in demand around the world.
As more people buy electronic equipment, manufacturers(制造商)are beginning to face shortages of the raw material needed to make their products, so recycling and reusing materials from discarded(废弃的)products and waste makes economic and environmental sense. Recycling e-waste is practiced both formally and informally. Formal e-waste recycling usually involves taking apart the electronics, separating and sorting through the materials and cleaning them. Companies must obey health and safety rules to reduce the health and environmental harm of handling e-waste by using pollution-control technologies. All this makes formal recycling expensive.
With the amount of e-waste growing around the world, recycling alone will not be enough to handle the problem. In order to reduce e-waste, manufacturers need to design electronics that are safer, and more durable (耐用的)repairable. As a customer, you’d better get our old product repaired if possible and buy a new device only when you really need.
33.The underlined word “addressed” in paragraph 1 can be replaced by _________.
A.reduced B.changed
C.controlled D.solved
34.What is paragraph 2 mainly bout?
A.The problems caused by the upsurge in e-waste.
B.The reasons for e-waste’s sharp increasing.
C.The bad effect of updating devices.
D.The causes of devices’ price dropping.
35.What makes recycling e-waste meaningful according to the text?
A.Improving the quality of e-devices.
B.Lowering the costs of technology innovation.
C.Relieving companies’ lacking raw materials.
D.Increasing the variety of electronic products.
36.What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Recycling is the only way to reduce e-waste.
B.Companies should be mainly responsible for reducing e-waste.
C.Repairing a device is better than buying a new one.
D.Everyone should take action to reduce e-waste.
【答案】33.D 34.B 35.C 36.D
根据上文“In 2016, the world’s population make 49 million tons of electronic waste. It has been calculated that there will be more than 60 million tons by 2021. The amount of electronic waste is growing so rapidly”(2016年,世界人口制造了4900万吨电子垃圾。
根据第二段“What is causing the upsurge(激增)in e-waste?”(是什么导致了电子垃圾的激增?)
根据第三段“As more people buy electronic equipment, manufacturers(制造商)are beginning to face shortages of the raw material needed to make their products. so recycling and reusing materials from discarded(废弃的)products and waste makes economic and environmental sense.”(随着越来越多的人购买电子设备,制造商开始面临生产产品所需原材料的短缺。
根据最后一段“In order to reduce e-waste, manufacturers need to design electronics that are safer, and more durable(耐用的)repairable As a customer, you'd better get our old product repaired if possible and buy a new device only when you really need.”(为了减少电子产品的浪费,制造商需要设计出更安全、更耐用的电子产品。

B.There are various shapes of glass straws.
C.Titanium or silver straws are valueless.
D.Straws are not necessary for all drinks.
32.What’s the author’s attitude to bottles that come with straws?
A.doubtful B.critical C.disappointed D.unclear
