It is important to remember that we all learn At different speeds and through different styles of learning. Something that really helped me progress/was finding a patient language exchange partner. Finding someone whose level of English was similar to my level of Spanish to practice with made me feel much more confident
Lastly, celebrate the small success and remember how far you have come! Instead of focusing on how far you have to go, focus on the progress you have already made and be proud of your achievements!

The proposal for a new Indonesian capital city has been on the cards ever since the country gained independence from the Dutch in 1945. The political and economic crises which followed have long delayed the plan, but current president, Joko Widodo, now appears determined to make the move a reality. The government officially confirmed that the capital will be moved from Jakarta to a new location within Kalimantan, part of the island of Borneo in Indonesia.
A number of factors are likely to have influenced the decision to forge ahead with the move, but it seems likely that Jakarta’s environmental problems are chief among them. Built on swampy(沼泽的)ground, Jakarta is sinking, in some parts at a rate of 20cm a year. Experts predict that most of northern Jakarta could sink beneath the sea by 2050. What’s more, Jakarta is rarely mentioned without reference to its extreme levels of traffic jams and air pollution. There could be other reasons too. John McCarthy, an expert on land use in Kalimantan at the Australian National University Crawford School points to a potential desire to spread wealth throughout Indonesia. “Jakarta is the most highly developed core of Indonesia which sucks all the money and opportunities from other areas,” he says. “I think there’s logic in splitting the economic and political capital.”
But the location of this new political center is proving controversial. Some environmental groups are concerned that the chosen location in East Kalimantan will increase logging and destruction of nearby forests, home to orangutans and other endangered species. Indonesia’s planning minister previously told reporters that the new capital will be a sustainable “forest city” that won’t result in the destruction of protected forests, but how exactly this would work has not yet been explained.
Despite these challenges, the government is now putting its plan in motion. But even if this new capital is built, Jakarta will still need protection. Home to ten million people, the city simply can’t be neglected.
25.What is the Indonesian government’s new plan?
A.Building a forest city. B.Developing resources of Borneo. C.Electing a new president. D.Relocating the capital city.
26.What may be the main reason for the government’s decision?
A.To reduce land pollution.
B.To seek better living environment.
C.To make full use of swampy ground.
D.To balance the economic growth between cities.
27.What worries some people about the government’s choice?
A.It may cost a lot of money. B.It may destroy the local ecosystem.
C.It may disrupt many residents’ normal life. D.It may cause the decline of the old capital city.
28.What does the underlined word “neglected” probably mean?
A.Ignored. B.Ranked. C.Repaired. D.Damaged.
Learning a new language can improve brain health, according to a study. Researchers found that older adults who studied Spanish had similar improvements in critical cognitive skills (关键认知技能) as those who took part in brain training activities focusing on those skills. Participants in the study learning Spanish also reported greater enjoyment than those taking part in brain training.
The researchers noted early studies have found that bilingual individuals (掌握两种语言的人) develop dementia (痴呆) later in life, suggesting that bilingualism has a protective effect on brain health. According to the researchers, the study is among the first to examine whether the process of learning a language can benefit (有利于) brain health in similar ways as bilingualism
“The people in our study showed cognitive improvements without becoming fluent in Spanish, which suggests that you don’t have to be bilingual for your brain to benefit from working with another language,” said Ellen of Psychology at York University. “This is encouraging since bilingualism is often reached early in life and difficult to achieve in adulthood, but we can choose to learn another language at any age to get some of the cognitive benefits enjoyed by bilingual individuals.”
The study found 76 adults aged 65 to 75 years, all of whom spoke only one language, were cognitively healthy, had never formally studied Spanish before and had not studied any other language in the past 10 years. These people were divided into 3 groups: language learning, brain training, or a wait list serving as a control group. For 16 weeks, people either spent 30minutes a day, 5 days a week learning Spanish using Duolingo, an online language learning app, or used Brain HQ by Posit Science for the same amount (数量) of time.
“Besides the cognitive benefits, learning a second language may enrich older adults’ lives in other important ways, for example, by leading to new friendships or opening the door to a new culture or travel, helping them live life to the fullest,” said Jed Meltzer, Ph.D.
29.What did the study find?
A.Learning a new language is good for cognitive skills of older adults.
B.Brain training activities have a much bigger effect on cognitive skills.
C.Learning a language is more enjoyable than doing brain training activities.
D.Bilingual individuals can develop critical cognitive skills in a special way.
30.What did early studies suggest about bilingualism?
A.It puts people at risk of dementia.
B.It is good for people’s brain health.
C.It can help adults get through difficult times.
D.It can give people a chance to explore a new world.
31.How were the people in the study chosen?
A.Based on their level in Spanish.
B.Based on their learning experiences.
C.Based on their age, cognitive health, and language background.
D.Based on their preferences for language learning or brain training.
32.What did Jed Meltzer talk about in the last paragraph?
A.Some influences of learning a language on cognitive skills
B.Some other advantages of learning a new language.
C.Some workable ways to learn a second language.
D.Some facts about old people learning a language.

四、语法填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Music is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries. Its impact on the human brain and emotions is profound. Studies have shown that listening to music can reduce stress, alleviate pain, and improve mood. This is because music activates the brain’s reward system, 57 (release) dopamine, a chemical associated with pleasure. 58 is particularly powerful in evoking memories. A song from our past can instantly transport us back to a specific time and place, 59 (trigger) a flood of associated emotions. This connection makes music a valuable tool in therapy for patients with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Beyond its emotional effects, music also enhances cognitive performance. The “Mozart effect,” 60 suggests listening to classical music can temporarily boost spatial reasoning, has been widely debated. However, learning to play a musical instrument has clearer benefits. It improves memory, attention, and executive function by strengthening the connections between the brain’s two hemispheres. 61 (play) an instrument is like a full-body workout for the brain. In social contexts, music fosters cohesion. From national anthems to protest songs, it 62 (use) to unite people and express collective identity. Despite the diversity of musical styles across the globe, the core elements — rhythm, melody, harmony — speak to a shared human experience. In an increasingly fragmented world, music serves as a reminder of our common humanity. It can comfort us in sorrow, amplify our joy, and provide a soundtrack to our lives. Whether we are actively 63 (listen) or passively hearing it, music shapes our inner world in ways we are only beginning 64 (understand). 六、书面表达
68.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My friend Emma has always been involved in community service. She and her husband founded a clothing center, offering free clothes, shoes, etc. to anyone who needs them.
Then there’s me. I’d never been involved in community service. Instead, I spent my time and money buying snacks, dining out, watching TV and movies etc.
That changed one evening last winter when Emma called me. She told me she needed my help and then asked what I would do the next evening. I replied briefly that I wanted to see a film.
“But David, tomorrow I need your help for several hours at my clothing center,” Emma continued. “I had a family who signed up to help this week, but they’ve got the flu. My husband and I can’t run the place alone.” I hesitated, thinking I might not be able to help since I had never been to her clothing center before. But Emma insisted, saying that the next evening she needed me to boldly go where I had never gone before. Since my friend was desperate, I had to agree.
At 6:45 the next evening, I showed up at the clothing center in an old brick building on Main Street.
“Thank you,” said Emma when I arrived. “It’s really simple. My husband and I will manage the actual clothing room; we just need you to run the welcome table by the door. Have people line up, make sure they know what they need, give them a bag, and then we’ll take them in one at a time. In the past few weeks, we’ve got a ton of donations of clothes, shoes, gloves, etc., so we should be able to help many people.”
The directions seemed clear enough; I figured I could handle it. How many people in my town were going to show up on a snowy Wednesday night for free clothes anyway? At 7:00 pm, Emma unlocked the front door.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Looking out, I was surprised by the number of people who would come in.

W: Maybe a wallet.
M: Any particular colour?
W: Not really.
M: How about this one?
W: I like the design, but don’t particularly care for the colour. Do you have that in other colours, too?
M: Well, they come in white, pale yellow, and brown. Will a brown one do?
W: Yes…
M: Here you are.
W: How much is it?
M: It’s only 20 dollars.

W: Ah, let’s break it down. What aspect of technology are you thinking of focusing on?

M: Yes. I’ve always wanted to be one of the people you see on television talking to guests about their careers.
W: Have you thought about other options? Those types of shows can be on many different types of media. Many hosts start out on the radio, but now the technology is better and you can even make a show on the Internet.
M: I want it to be the show that people watch while they’re eating dinner.
W: That’s a good goal, but it’ll be difficult to get you on television with just that idea. I suggest you come up with something that makes you different from the other similar shows airing now.

W: What have you already known about the river?
M: I have just read some very bad news about it. It has reached its lowest level in over a century due to a severe drought.
W: It must be impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and the local ecosystem now.
M: You’re right. Boats cannot go anywhere. Food and water cannot reach remote villages. High water temperatures have also resulted in the deaths of over 100 endangered river dolphins.
W: That’s really sad! I know the city of Manaus is the most populous in the region. People there must be suffering now.
M: You bet. The city has recorded a water level of 13.59 meters, significantly lower than the 17.60 meters recorded the previous year. It’s the lowest level since record-keeping began in 1902.
W: So what caused the drought? Is it global warming?
M: Experts say it was the result of El Nino climate phenomenon.

68.One possible version:
Looking out, I was surprised by the number of people who would come in. They were of different ages, some in worn-out jackets, and others with tired eyes. Anxious and panicked, I stood by the door, offering smiles and warmth in the cold air. My uncertainties faded as I saw their gratitude. I distributed bags, engaging in brief conversations and learning about their lives in those struggling moments. Emma’s words rang in my mind: “Boldly go where you have never gone before.” I realized it was more than handing out bags; it was about contributing to the community that I had ignored.
That snowy Wednesday night marked the beginning of my journey into community service. The next day, on my way home from work, I stopped before stores to do some shopping for Emma’s clothing center. I considered the varied needs of those who would receive these donations as I selected items. Each choice was aimed at providing warmth and comfort for someone facing challenges. Emma’s call led me not only to a clothing center, but also to a place where empathy and action are connected.
