Denmark, known for its inventive restaurants and elegant design studios, is about to become known for something more basic: the world’s first belch (打嗝) and manure (粪便) tax.
That’s because there are five times as many pigs and cows in Denmark as there are people. Nearly two-thirds of its land is taken up by farming. And agriculture is becoming its largest share of climate pollution, putting lawmakers under intense public pressure to reduce it. So now, Denmark’s government, has agreed to tax the methane emissions (甲烷排放) released by farm animals. The measure was passed this month, making it the only such climate tax on farm animals in the world.
“I think it’s good,” said Rasmus, a 31-year-old citizen who was shopping for dinner in Copenhagen. “It’s a gentle push to encourage plant-based diets, perhaps fewer pork choices.”
The tax is part of a larger package designed to clean up the country’s agricultural pollution and eventually restore some farmland to its natural form, like peat lands (泥炭地), which are exceptionally good at trapping planet-heating gases underground but were emptied decades ago.
Denmark’s effort is also a wake-up call for many agricultural nations, including the United States, as they face the same calls to reduce pollution from farms.
Globally, the food system accounts for a fourth of greenhouse gases, and reducing those emissions requires making tough choices on diets, jobs and industries. That makes food a particularly challenging climate problem to address. No wonder that efforts to reduce agriculture’s climate emissions have faced strong resistance, from Brussels to Delhi to Wellington, where the New Zealand government proposed a burp tax in 2022 only to have a later government overturn it. Even Denmark’s measure faced heated political debates and has been under negotiation for years. The measure was finally passed in November. Starting in 2030, it will charge farmers 300 Danish kroner (around $43) for every ton of carbon dioxide. By 2035, the tax will more than double to 750 kroner (S106).
A bigger, more difficult dilemma still looms: Will Denmark continue to tum over so much of its land to cows and pigs?
4. Why did Denmark introduce a “belch and manure” tax?
A. To boost its tourism through new taxes.
B. To improve animal welfare on farms.
C. To reduce climate pollution from animals.
D. To take a lead role in environmental protection.
5. What can be inferred about the new tax?
A. It is opposed by most citizens in Denmark.
B. It aims to ultimately restore natural landscapes.
C. It will quickly address the agricultural pollution.
D. It has drawn inspiration from the United States.
6. What is the main idea of paragraph 6?
A. Praising Denmark’s successful tax measure.
B. Comparing the food policies of different countries.
C. Discussing the benefits of reducing farm emissions.
D. Explaining the challenges in cutting farm emissions.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Denmark’s groundbreaking emission tax.
B. How Denmark reshapes global farming.
C. The future of Denmark’s agricultural industry.
D. Global struggle to reduce agricultural pollution.
One of the greatest challenges in caring for such intelligent animals as chimpanzees (猩猩) is providing them with enriching experiences. Every day, the chimpanzees at Project Chimps receive morning and evening food-based enrichment devices, but caregivers are always looking for more ways to keep the chimps mentally engaged. With 79 chimpanzees, each with their distinctive personality, care staff often find that different chimps react differently to new enrichment.
Last year, we began inviting musicians to perform for chimps to see what they may respond. A violin performance received quite the response. Additional musicians were lined up to visit but the coronavirus has stopped the activities, which we hope to resume in the near future.
This past week, we brought an electric piano for the chimps to investigate. Some chimps, like twins Buttercup and Clarisse, were immediately interested and could not wait to tap out a few notes. Others, like Emma, were more interested in trying to take it apart.
29-year-old Precious has very little tolerance for the piano. She sat off to the side for a few minutes, but eventually she decided that was enough. She called an end to the enrichment session by throwing a handful of waste at the piano. Receiving her message loud and clear, we removed the piano.
We could never have guessed how 33-year-old Luke would react to it. As with many retired lab chimpanzees, Luke has some anxiety issues. He seems particularly distrustful of anything new, including people, food, and enrichment. But when we presented the chimps with the piano, Luke was the first to investigate. We could not believe our eyes—this usually anxious chimpanzee bravely chose to explore something new!
To us at Project Chimps, this is what it is all about: giving chimpanzees the freedom to choose. We are honored to be part of their journey.
8. Why do chimpanzees respond differently to new enrichment?
A. They are of different genders.
B. They have natural curiosities.
C. They are as intelligent as humans.
D. They have their unique characters.
9. Who showed the least interest in the piano?
A. Buttercup and Clarisse. B. Emma. C. Precious. D. Luke.
10. What does the underlined word “resume” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Continue. B. Suspend. C. Monitor. D. Regulate.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. How caregivers care for the retired chimpanzees.
B. What care staff do to enrich chimpanzees’ daily life.
C. How chimpanzees are trained through various enrichment.
D. What Project Chimps does to observe and study wild chimps.
Like a literal breath of fresh air, so-called “micro-forests” represent a green practice, boosting the quality of life in many of the world’s polluted and overcrowded urban centers.
These small areas of densely (稠密地) planted woodland trees, also known as mini-forests or pocket forests, allow communities to manage the effects of climate change in a small way, but offer enormous benefits to the environment and local people, as they restore soil, air and water quality. These mini-forests are proving a magnet for various animal and plant species, which offer human beings the chance to learn more about nature. Magically becoming self-sustaining over time, they are a way to make reimagined urban life a reality.
Significantly, mini-forests, as one of their nonprofit facilitators SUGi outlines, serve to build social bonds in communities as well, as they come together to enjoy and sustain new natural settings. They can also regenerate and beautify neglected (被忽视的) plots in cities such as former basketball courts, and disused parking lots and playgrounds, for instance.
According to the UN’s State of the World’s Forests Report from 2020, over 440 million hectares (公顷) of forest have been lost to other uses since 1990. Now, more than half of the global population lives in urban areas, but the access to green spaces is limited. The good news is that micro-forests in cities can offer an important chance to fight against deforestation and enlarge green spaces.
Euro News details some of the many exciting micro-forests that have taken root globally. Nonprofit Earthwatch Europe, for instance, has planted 285 of them since 2022. Their plots are made up of 600 trees. A tree-planting program aiming to restore biodiversity and reintroduce native species, SUGi, has created 230 pocket forests in 52 cities around the world, from Toulouse in France, to Madrid in Spain, and Saint George in Romania.
12. What does the underlined word “magnet” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Something artificial. B. Something simplified.
C. Something innovative. D. Something appealing.
13. How do micro-forests benefit a city according to the text?
A. They reduce traffic jams. B. They improve urban land use.
C. They popularize sports activities. D. They ensure citizens’ privacy.
14. What is the data in paragraph 4 intended to stress?
A. The fast pace of urbanization. B. The need to control populations.
C. The importance of micro-forests, D. The harm caused by deforestation.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Plans to further promote micro-forests. B. Benefits of sustaining micro-forests.
C. Examples of creating micro-forests in cities. D. Policies about micro-forest preservation.

The scorching sun beat down on our sixth — grade class hiking through Blue Mountains. Mr. Thompson, our outdoor education teacher, kept reminding us: “Drink water, watch your footing, and remember-every scratch here could become a life lesson.”
My best mate Josh chuckled, balancing his water bottle like a circus act. “Relax, Em! We’ve done CPR drills a million times. What’s the worst that could —”
A sharp cry cut through the air.
Twenty meters ahead, Lily-the quiet exchange student from Japan-had stumbled into a dried riverbed. Her leg was pinned beneath a pointed rock, blood soaking through her trousers. “I... I think I heard a crack,” she whispered, her face ghostly pale.
Mr. Thompson knelt beside her, his voice steady but urgent. “Lily, don’t move. Everyone else-backpacks off! Josh, get the first aid kit. Emily, find two straight branches for splints (夹板). Now!”
My hands shook as I pressed a bandage against Lily’s wound. Josh froze, staring at the odd angle of her leg. “Focus!” Mr. Thompson snapped, his tone softening as he addressed Lily. “You’re doing brilliantly. Breathe slowly. Help’s coming.”
He turned to us, rapid — firing instructions:
“Josh-control bleeding. Use the pressure bandage from the yellow pouch.”
“Emily-stabilize the leg. Remember the ‘above and below’ rule for splint placement.”
“Sophie-call emergency services. GPS coordinates (坐标) are on my watch.”
Lily gripped my wrist as I positioned the branches. “Will I... walk again?” Her whisper sent chills down my spine.
“Of course you will,” I lied, recalling last week’s first — aid lecture: Broken bones risk infection. Immobilization is critical. I tightened the bandages, whispering apologies each time she screamed.
As dusk approached, the radio crackled with bad news — Ambulance needs 90 minutes. Josh suddenly lunged toward the first aid kit. “Her lips are turning blue! What if it’s shock?”

【答案】例文
“Lift her legs a bit more,” Mr. Thompson directed. He wrapped an emergency blanket around her. “Keep talking to her — anything to keep her awake.” Sophie, Josh and I took turns telling jokes that made Lily groan despite the pain. Her faint laughter was the sweetest sound. But as the air grew colder, her grip weakened. “Stay with us,” Mr. Thompson urged. “Tell us about Tokyo’s cherry blossoms,” I added softly. She described busy markets and pink skies, struggling to stay conscious.
At last, the ambulance arrived. The paramedics checked our work and nodded. “Great job — you stabilized her perfectly.” Lily squeezed my hand weakly before they carried her away. Three weeks later, she returned to class, slightly lame but bright. She placed a paper crane on my desk. “In Japan, this crane stands for healing. You helped me hold on.” Deeply moved, I decided then that I would always be someone who help people stand up again when they fall.
