Many people want to make changes in the new year, so they usually make New Year’s plans at the beginning of the year, especially on the first day of the year. However, experts suggest that it’s better to make plans from February.
“January is probably the hardest month of the year to make changes,” said Tim Bono, an expert from Washington University. There are several reasons why we should make plans after January.
The first reason is the weather. The weather in January is always cold in many countries in the north part of the earth. People may choose to stay at home and not to go out in such cold weather. The second reason is the post-holiday syndrome (节后综合征). During the New Year holiday, people relax. As a result, they may become lazy and have lessmotivationto carry out the plans. The last one is the sunlight. There is not enough sunlight in January because the days are shorter. People may feel tired if they don’t get enough sunlight.
For these reasons, people may find it difficult to make changes at the beginning of the year. So why not make plans a bit later?
4. People usually make New Year’s plans on ________.
A. 1st January B. 1st February C. 15th January D. 15th February
5. The writer shows ________ reasons why we should make plans after January.
A. two B. three C. four D. five
6. What does the underlined word “motivation” mean in English?
A. Food. B. Fun. C. Power. D. Time.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell people to care about the weather.
B. To ask people to have fun in the New Year holiday.
C. To encourage people to go out and enjoy the sun.
D. To advise people to make plans after January.

Cats are small, graceful animals with soft fur, sharp claws, and big, shiny eyes. They have flexible (灵活的) bodies that allow them to jump high and land lightly. Their ears can turn in different directions (方向), helping them catch every sound. These furry friends live all over the world, both as pets in people’s homes and as strays (流浪猫) in cities and villages.
Cats have been helpful to humans in agriculture (农业) for a long time. In the past, they were mainly used to catch mice and rats. These small pests (害虫) often ate stored grains, and cats were the perfect solution. By keeping the rodent (啮齿动物) population in check, cats protected food supplies (供应) and saved farmers from losses.
As pets, cats are very popular. Taking care of a cat teaches people about patience (耐心). Unlike some pets that need constant (持久的) attention, cats can enjoy themselves, making them a great choice for busy people.
In culture, cats have special meanings. In ancient Egypt, cats were symbols of protection. In modern stories and cartoons, cats often appear as clever characters.
All in all, cats are much more than just cute animals. They have left a deep mark on human life.

Jim and I were like brothers. We walked to school together, shared lunch every day, and both dreamed of winning the school’s basketball game. That’s why I felt so excited when our teacher said we’d be the main players of the team.
But everything changed a week before the game. I passed Jim’s desk after class and heard him say to our teammate, “He’s not ready for the big game. He always misses the key shots (关键投篮).” My face turned red. I didn’t let him explain—just shouted angrily, “I thought you were my friend!” and ran away. After that, we didn’t speak a word. When we passed each other in the hallway, we’d look away. I felt lonely, and even my basketball skills got worse without my best friend practicing with me.
Mom noticed my sadness. “You look like you’re carrying a heavy bag,” she said at dinner. I told her everything. “Did you ask Jim what he really meant?” she asked softly. “Misunderstandings are like knots (结)—you need to talk to open them, not pull harder.” That night, I wrote Jim a note asking to meet at our usual basketball court.
When I saw Jim, I was nervous but started first: “I’m sorry I shouted at you.” Jim was surprised. “I’m the one who’s sorry! I was talking about your old shoes—they’re too slippery (容易打滑的), so you sometimes miss shots. I wanted to buy you a new pair but didn’t know how to say it.” We both laughed. I realized how silly I was to misunderstand him.
We practiced together that afternoon, just like before. In the game, we won the second prize. But the real win was getting our friendship back. I learned that good communication isn’t just about talking—it’s about listening, too. It’s the best way to keep relationships warm and strong.
12. What made the writer angry with Jim?
A. Jim refused to practice basketball with him.
B. Jim said he wasn’t ready for the big game.
C. Jim broke their shared basketball.
D. Jim took his spot in the basketball team.
13. Which of the following is the correct order of the events?
①The writer had a fight with Jim. ②Mom advised the writer to talk to Jim.
③The writer and Jim made up with each other. ④The writer heard Jim talking with a teammate.
A. ④①②③ B. ①④②③ C. ④②①③ D. ①②④③
14. Why did Jim mention (提及) the writer’s “problem” to the teammate?
A. He wanted to replace the writer in the team.
B. He hoped to help the writer solve the problem.
C. He thought the writer was not good at basketball.
D. He wanted the teammate to laugh at the writer.
15. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. Good friends should never have different opinions.
B. Winning a game is more important than friendship.
C. It’s important to communicate to solve misunderstandings.
D. Mothers always know how to deal with children’s problems.
