My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled (翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our favorite-red tomatoes.
As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of the magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. However, as Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he had cancer, he still took care of his garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded (入侵) his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of colorful vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed (除草) them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes.
A few years later, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Last year, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up an amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.
24. Why did the author like the garden when he was a child?
A. The garden was freshly tilled by the worker. B. He loved what his mother grew in the garden.
C. The garden was planted with colorful flowers. D. He enjoyed being in the garden with his father.
25. When all the kids started their own families, the author’s father ______.
A. stopped his gardening B. spent more time on gardening
C. turned to other hobbies D. focused on planting tomatoes
26. What can be learned about the garden when the author’s father was seriously ill?
A. The garden was almost deserted. B. The author’s son took charge of it.
C. No plants grew in the garden at all. D. It brought the author a great harvest.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Changing Seasons of Life B. The Magic of Freshly Tilled Soil
C. Gardening through Generations D. A Teenager’s Love for Gardening
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. A 27. C

On a hot summer day in 2019, Li Xinze and his friend He Liantianze walked past a small pool. It was filled with smelly algae (水藻), making it hard for workers to clean up. From then on, the two 17-year-old boys from Hefei No. 8 High School in Anhui set their minds on developing a robot to deal with this problem.
On Aug 19, the 18th Soong Ching Ling Award for Children’s Invention was announced. Li and He received the Gold Award for their invention of a water surface cleaning robot.
It took them about four years to finish the robot. The robot moves like a boat and can be controlled from far away on the waterside. To collect rubbish, the robot has two plates as “hands”. Then a conveyor belt (传送带) is used for sending the rubbish to a basket. “There is also a heating sheet under the belt to help dry the rubbish and make it easy to deal with,” said Li. Compared to other robots of its kind, their robot is small, light and eco-friendly. “It has a solar panel (太阳能电池板) set on top,” said He.
The journey to building their robot was full of challenges. But they worked hard to deal with these problems. “It used to be heavy and easy to turn over. Following the advice of our teacher, we changed the top part from steel to alloy (合金) to make it lighter,” said Li.
As for their next step, they hope to make the robot work on its own. “We will continue to learn programming skills to make our dreams come true,” said He.

A. For their love for the school. B. For the smelly algae in a pool.
C. For the request from the workers. D. For the suggestion from their teacher.
29. In which year did Li Xinze and He Liantianze finish the robot?

30. What features does the robot have?
①It moves like a boat.
②It has three plates as “hands”.
③It can’t be controlled from far away.
④It has a heating sheet under a conveyor belt.
⑤It is small, light and friendly to the environment.

Cortni Borgerson, a primatologist, and Pascal Elison, a Masoala National Park tour guide, were rushing through the forest in search of a red ruffed lemur (红领狐猴) in the area of northeastern Madagascar. They tried to find the lemur after hearing its call.
Wild lemurs are found only in Madagascar, where they help spread seeds and pollinate plants, keeping the environment healthy and balanced. However, the red ruffed lemur is endangered because of hunting (猎杀).
While hunting lemurs has been not allowed by the law since the 1960s, people hunt and eat them when other foods are not enough. Nearly 90 percent of locals have eaten lemur, according to Borgerson’s research. Red ruffed lemurs are the most likely to end up at people’s dinner tables, because they’re relatively easy to catch and are considered particularly tasty. What’s more, in Malagasy cities, lemur meat is now offered as a high-end food.
To help save lemurs from hunting without leaving Masoala communities hungry, Borgerson turned to bugs (昆虫), a specific type called sakondry. They’ve been a food source in Madagascar for at least 400 years, and could be a game changer for lemurs.
Why sakondry? These bugs, known for their meaty taste, are easy to farm. Borgerson has taught local people how to farm them by planting lima bean crops that attract the bugs. The bugs grow quickly and don’t harm the plants much. The only real catch is that the plants may not survive well everywhere in the country because of climate differences.
Sakondry are so well received that sometimes they’ re even sold at prices similar to beef. Borgerson says her program isn’t focused on business sales but on saving lemurs. In just three years, sakondry farming has already helped cut lemur hunting by at least 50% in the communities. Borgerson plans to bring the bug farming to at least 3,000 more households in northeastern Madagascar next year.
32. What can we know about wild lemurs in Madagascar?
A. They tend to fight for food. B. They often attack local people.
C. They support healthy ecosystems. D. They are hard to hunt in the wild.
33. Why does Borgerson teach the locals to farm sakondry?
A. To cut the prices of farm produce. B. To offer them a replacement for lemurs.
C. To break the habit of eating bugs. D. To encourage them to run a business.
34. Which of the following best explains “catch” underlined in paragraph 5?
A. A clear message. B. A similar model. C. A hidden problem. D. A great advantage.
35. What can be inferred about Borgerson’s program?
A. It is effective in saving lemurs. B. It stops people buying beef.
C. It is mainly for business sales. D. It increases the cost of hunting.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. C 35. A

【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“The bugs grow quickly and don’t harm the plants much.(虫子长得很快,对植物危害不大。)”和“the plants may not survive well everywhere in the country because of climate differences(由于气候差异,这些植物可能无法在全国各地生存)”可知,划线词所在句子表示“唯一真正的问题是,由于气候差异,这些植物可能无法在全国各地都能很好地生存”,划线词catch的意思是“问题”,和A hidden problem意思相近。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In just three years, sakondry farming has already helped cut lemur hunting by at least 50% in the communities.(在短短三年内,sakondry农业已经帮助社区减少了至少50%的狐猴狩猎。)”可知,Borgerson的计划对拯救狐猴很有效。故选A。

根据空前“Like math, chemistry, and many other subjects, learning a foreign language, especially listening and pronunciation, is a cumulative (积累的) process.(就像数学、化学和许多其他学科一样,学习一门外语,尤其是听力和发音,是一个积累的过程)”及空后“If you don’t keep up with your studies, your language skills will be weakened.(如果你不跟上学习进度,你的语言技能就会被削弱)”可知,上文强调学习语言是一个过程,且后文提到跟不上进度技能就会被削弱,推测本句主要与前后句语义相承,是在解释语言学习是一个怎样的过程。故选项D“你今天学的东西建立在你之前学过的知识之上”符合语境。故选D。
【37题详解】
根据本段主题句“Put listening first.(把听力放在第一位)”及空后“So it’s important that you learn what to listen for when the language is being spoken.(所以当你说一门语言的时候,学会听什么是很重要的)”可知,本句针对本段主题句展开论述,说明听力放在第一位的原因,并引出后面的解释。故选项E“语音是所有口头语言交流的基础”,与下文构成因果关系,符合语境。故选E。
【38题详解】

When you speak, take the time to make sure you’re pronouncing words accurately.(新学习者犯的最大错误之一是更注重速度而不是准确性。

根据空前“The best way to improve your ability to listen and pronounce words correctly is to listen to the language being spoken by native speakers in real-life contexts.(提高听力和正确发音能力的最好方法是在现实生活中听母语人士说的语言)”及空后“Read out what you hear, reproducing words, phrases and sentences as accurately as you can.(把你听到的读出来,尽可能准确地复述单词、短语和句子)”可知,上文建议听母语人士说的语言,后文提到把听到的读出来,推测本句与听母语人士说话有关,故选项F“听母语人士的讲话,以及录音、磁带、电影和电视节目”符合语境。故选F。
【40题详解】
根据空前“·Listen to yourself speak. It’s not enough to listen to native speakers speak the language. You need to listen to yourself speak the language as well. Record yourself pronouncing words and speaking the language. Compare your pronunciation of words, phrases and sentences to that of native speakers.(·听自己说话。光听母语人士说这门语言是不够的。你也需要听自己说这门语言。录下自己的发音和语言。将你的单词、短语和句子的发音与母语人士的发音进行比较)”可知,上文主要描述了听自己说话的过程,本句为本段最后一句,故承接上文,总结如何利用这一练习过程。故选项G“重复这个练习,直到你的发音接近母语人士的发音”符合语境。故选G。

Oliver looked at the report and didn’t seem worried. “Mom, I don’t think it’s a big deal, ” he said. This made his mom even more upset.
“Not a big deal? ” she shouted with great angry. “This is your future we’re talking about! ” In a fit of anger, she immediately turned off the computer where Oliver was playing the games and tore up the test paper on the desk.
“Stop! ” Oliver yelled, his voice rising to match hers. “You don’t get it! School is hard, and I need an escape! ”
“An escape?” she retorted (反驳道). “You can’t escape from your responsibilities!”
He replied angrily, “Maybe if you cared more about me than just my grades, I wouldn’t have to escape into games! ”
They argued heatedly, and Oliver left the house, slamming the door behind him. Oliver’s mom cried alone. A few minutes later, she calmed down but she felt anxious for Oliver’s safety.

A. The garden was almost deserted. B. The author’s son took charge of it.
C. No plants grew in the garden at all. D. It brought the author a great harvest.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Changing Seasons of Life B. The Magic of Freshly Tilled Soil
