Ancient Chinese people enjoyed special summer treats similar to modern ice cream and fruit dishes. Here are three popular ones from history.
Su Shan (Crumbled Ice Dessert)
Su Shan was a dish made of crushed (碎的) ice mixed with milk and butter. Poet Wang Lingran from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) described its preparation in his poem Ode to Su Shan: sugar was added, and the dessert was shaped into various forms, sometimes decorated with flowers and leaves. The texture (口感) was unique — “neither hard nor watery, melting at once on the tongue”. Many scholars believe this was an early form of ice cream.
Ice and Iced Drinks
Though refrigerators didn’t exist, iceboxes for storing ice became common in wealthy Tang Dynasty families. People drank iced water or ate crushed ice. By the Song Dynasty (960-1279), iced drinks were widely sold on streets. Some rich people even offered free iced water and medicinal drinks, with little green beans or a sweet-taste root, on streets as community service to prevent sickness from the heat.
Cherries with Cheese and Sugar Syrup (糖浆)
During the Wei, Jin, and Southern-Northern Dynasties (220-581), dairy products like cheese became more common. In the Tang Dynasty, warmer climates in the Yellow River region led to widespread cherry growing. Cherries, ripe in early summer, were often paired with cheese and sugar syrup. Song Dynasty poet Lu You noted, “Eat cherries, peaches, and cheese together.”
These treats — added with a little extra from green beans to cherries — show how ancient Chinese people creatively cooled off in summer with flavors and textures to make them more tasty, which were very much like modern favorites.
1. What was the unique texture of Su Shan according to Wang Lingran’s poem?
A. It was hard and required chewing.
B. It felt thick and creamy like yogurt.
C. It remained hard for hours after serving.
D. It softened soon when touching the tongue.
2. Why did wealthy people offer free iced water publicly in the Song Dynasty?
A. To honor a traditional festival event.
B. To attract customers to their ice shops.
C. To introduce some new medicinal drinks.
D. To help people avoid heat-related illness.
3. What do all three treats have in common?
A. They were all for wealthy families.
B. They included tasty extra additions.
C. They included expensive food fillings.
D. They were cold desserts with medicine.

A month before my first marathon (马拉松), one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust (再调整). Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a. m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
4. A month before the marathon, the author ________.
A. was well trained B. felt scared
C. lost hope D. made up his mind to run
5. Why did the author mention the P. E. class in his 7th year?
A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher. B. To show he was not talented in sports.
C. To amuse the readers with a funny story. D. To share a precious memory.
6. How was the author’s first marathon?
A. He walked to the end. B. He quit halfway.
C. He got the first prize. D. He made it.
7. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. A man owes his success to his family support.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
D. One is never too old to learn.

Many educators have been teaching themselves how to use AI. For Jerome Ong, a 5th grade teacher in Ridgewood, New Jersey, AI has changed the way he approaches teaching. He now uses AI tools every week in his classroom. “You have to find what works for your students,” he said. Ong not only teaches his students what AI is, but also where it falls short. “If you keep at it and say, ‘No, you’re wrong, you’re wrong,’ eventually AI will say, ‘I’m sorry, I was wrong.’ Doing that with your class can show you that AI isn’t really as smart as you think it is,” Ong said.
This summer, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a first — of — its — kind plan to train hundreds of thousands of members of the American Federation of Teachers. “I think if we’re going to make AI work for students and kids, we need to listen to teachers,” said Microsoft president Brad Smith. The $23 million investment will go toward virtual and in — person training in New York City.
“The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to use them, set practical guidelines and put teachers in the driver’s seat, teaching and learning can be better,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
However, critics cite (提出) cheating concerns and Microsoft’s own research, which showed a self — reported reduction in critical thinking skills when AI was not used responsibly. AFT member Lois Weiner thinks teachers would be better served by more support within schools than by a partnership with Silicon Valley. “There is so much boredom in the job, but the answer to that is to improve teachers’ working conditions,” said Weiner, adding that AI does not achieve better work conditions for teachers.
Smith argued education should be left to teachers: “Those of us in the tech field need to provide the tools and help school boards, districts, and teachers so they decide how to put those tools into practice.”
8. What do the underlined words “falls short” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Has limitations. B. Is wrong. C. Is not enough. D. Fails to work.
9. What can be inferred from Lois Weiner’s comments?
A. Partnership with tech firms benefits teachers.
B. AI can help reduce teachers’ boredom.
C. Teachers are smarter than AI.
D. Teachers need more support within schools.
10. What is Brad Smith’s attitude towards AI in education?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. AI’s Hidden Dangers: Why Teachers Should Say No.
B. Self — Learning: Teaching AI Without Help.
C. Teachers and AI: A Partnership to Improve Education.
D. Tech’s Ambition: Replacing Teachers with AI.
D
School is much more than a place where students gather to learn. For children, school is their first opportunity for social development and introduction to people outside of their family unit. Lessons learned in school go beyond mathematics and language arts. Students learn to develop individual interests and find other people who share their interests.
Music is one of the ways like — minded children come together. When many people talk about the advantages of music education, they are quick to point out all of the measurable results of music — education: many studies show the positive effect music programs can have on children in other areas of study.
Dr. Laurel Trainor, a professor of psychology, at McMaster University, has said young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory compared to children who do not receive musical training. Stanford University researchers have found that musical training improves how the brain processes the spoken word, a finding that researchers say could lead to improving the reading ability of children who have dyslexia (失语症) and other reading problems.
Furthermore, in an analysis (分析) of data on more than 25,000 secondary school students, researchers at the United States Department of Education found that students who report continuous participation in instrumental music during middle — school and high school perform much better in mathematics.
There are many reasons why music education can help to make a child a better student. There is also a social effort that can set the course for lifelong friends and help create social groups that last through school and beyond. Music education contributes to familiarity (熟悉) during a school career, when going from class to class or from school to school every year can cause children to feel nervous.
12. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To show school is a place for learning. B. To highlight the significance of music.
C. To stress the importance of learning. D. To lead to the main topic of the passage.
13. Which of the following is not the benefit of music education?
A. Brain development and improved memory.
B. Better performance in mathematics.
C. Fewer reading problems.
D. Better interpersonal relationships.
14. Researchers at the United States Department of Education did their research by ________.
A. analyzing data B. analyzing reports
C. conducting interviews D. conducting a survey
15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To indicate few schools really focus on music education.
B. To show music offers social and understanding benefits.
C. To prove music can make sure you have lots of close friends.
D. To suggest changing schools has a bad effect on everyone.

C. Fewer reading problems.
D. Better interpersonal relationships.
14. Researchers at the United States Department of Education did their research by ________.
A. analyzing data B. analyzing reports
C. conducting interviews D. conducting a survey
15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To indicate few schools really focus on music education.
B. To show music offers social and understanding benefits.
C. To prove music can make sure you have lots of close friends.
D. To suggest changing schools has a bad effect on everyone.
