I always admired my grandmother Jenny’s gardening skills. But it wasn’t until a sunny afternoon in her backyard that I became interested in gardening myself. We were there to grow tomatoes. She handed me a tiny young tomato plant. Then she shared stories of her own grandmother. It is a family tradition!
Over time, the tiny seedling (幼苗) had grown into a large tomato plant with many juicy red tomatoes. Harvesting those tomatoes with my grandma was a joy I won’t forget. We spent hours in her kitchen making delicious homemade tomato sauce. Just the smell alone brought back so many memories.
My time in the garden with my grandma showed me that gardening is more than just a hobby. It’s a way to connect with our roots. The garden became something we both loved, bringing us closer together and creating a strong connection.
However, my first try at gardening didn’t go very well. I watered the plants too much and forgot to take care of the soil. It was a learning experience. But I didn’t give up. Instead, I saw these moments as chances to learn. I read books, went to workshops, and asked experienced gardeners in my community for advice.
Yet, I lost some of my favorite plants because of terrible weather. But I didn’t lose heart. I used drought-tolerant (耐旱的) plants and protective coverings like shade cloths and blankets to help my plants grow strong.
Gardening is a lifelong journey of learning. It is always changing and requires us to stay open to new knowledge. It’s like finding a hidden library, where each plant offers something new to discover. The more time I spend in the garden, the more I realize that the soil is not just a place for plants to grow—it’s also ideal ground for my personal growth.

For deaf and hard-of-hearing people, communicating with those who don’t understand sign language can be a big challenge. But thanks to a great invention—the AI Sign Language Translation Glove — this problem may soon be a thing of the past.
Developed by a team of engineers from Tsinghua University, the glove is a perfect combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and wearable technology. It is equipped with tiny sensors (感应器) that can sense movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists (腕关节). When a deaf person wears the glove and uses sign languages, the sensors collect data about these movements and send it to a connected smartphone app.
The AI in the app then analyzes (分析) the data in real time and translates the sign language into spoken words or text. At the same time, the app can also translate spoken words from others into text, so the deaf person can read what is being said. The whole process takes less than one second, making communication smooth and natural.
What makes this glove even more amazing is that it’s easy to carry and not expensive. Unlike traditional sign language translation devices that are big and expensive, the AI glove is lightweight and costs only about 500 yuan. This means it can be used by ordinary people, not just rich families or organizations.
Since it came out last year, the glove has helped thousands of deaf people in China. A user named Li Na said, “Before, I always had to ask my sister to translate for me when I went shopping or saw a doctor. Now, with this glove, I can talk to anyone by myself. It has changed my life completely.”
The team behind the glove is now working on improving its accuracy (精确度) and adding more languages. They hope that one day, the glove will be used all over the world, breaking down communication walls between deaf and hearing people.

In 2025, as the “double reduction” policy carries on, more parents realize just doing exercises blindly doesn’t work. In fact, 90% of students’ learning troubles come from not having a complete “brain thinking system”. This new idea, proposed by brain science researchers, has become a hot topic in education. It is bringing a big change to how students develop their learning habits and thinking skills.
A study shows a complete brain thinking chain (链条) has six key parts: the start, the development, keeping on, feelings, self-check, and a clear structure. Many students feel learning is hard not because they are not smart, but because some parts of their thinking chain are broken. For example, if students fail to start properly, they will put off tasks; if they don’t persist, they will give up easily; and without self-check, their learning will not work well. To solve these problems, educational technology companies created the 4S brain training system, which helps students build a full thinking chain in a scientific way.
The 4S system has changed students’ habits greatly. Zhang Yu, a Hebei high school student, used to be crazy about games and put off doing his homework. After the system’s time management training, he planned study with an app, raising his English score from 89 to 123. Lin Xia from Jiangsu stopped using the tiring “sea of questions” method and analyzed mistakes from different angles (角度) to build her self-check habits, and her logical thinking improved a lot.
More importantly, the system helps develop key thinking skills. The 2025 World Digital Education Conference noticed the key of future education is technology-supported ability reconstruction (重构). The brain thinking chain training proves good habits and skills can be developed scientifically. This is very important for students to learn independently and face challenges in the future.
34. According to the passage, what is NOT a key part of a complete brain thinking chain?
A. The start. B. Feelings. C. Self-check. D. Planning.
35. Which of the following is TRUE about the 4S brain training system?
A. The system was created by the government to carry on the policy.
B. Zhang Yu’s English score increased by using time management training.
C. Lin Xia improved her logical thinking by using “sea of questions” training.
D. The system can develop thinking skills without any homework.
36. What is the best title for the passage?

If you were asked to introduce Lu You, how would you describe him? Perhaps as a famous poet who loved his country. But do you know that Lu is also a “slashie (斜杠青年)” of his time? If he had a social media introduction, it might read like this: poet / politician (政治家) / food expert / cat person.
On November 13, 2025, people celebrated the 900th birthday of Lu. Born in the Southern Song Dynasty, Lu was one of the poets who wrote many poems in Chinese history. About 9,300 of his poems are still around today. Most of his poems are filled with a wish to protect his homeland, making him a famous patriotic (爱国的) poet.
He was successful as a poet but had much trouble as a politician and was finally removed from his job.
However, he didn’t feel down, finding joy in other hobbies instead. For example, he loved flowers and food a lot. While serving in the Shu region, he wrote a book that listed 65 pomelo (柚子) types. He also wrote over 100 poems about cooking and growing vegetables. Many believe that his secret to long life-he lived to 85-was his healthy eating habits. He even wrote a poem about the good things of porridge (粥).
Lu also found comfort in his cat friends. He wrote funny poems to his cats, showing how cute they were and how they gave him warmth on cold days. The poems show that he was a true “cat person”.
As a mix of a great national dreamer and someone who loved life’s small joys, Lu showed us how to face difficulties and how to live a full life.

Chinese nine linked rings puzzle
It’s believed that the nine linked rings puzzle was created in the Western Han Dynasty. And it is usually made up of nine rings connected to a handle (手柄). Players have to remove all the rings from the handle to win the game. This is not a simple game. The solution takes 341 moves, so lots of patience is required. Tangram
First popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the tangram is a puzzle made up of seven pieces of different shapes. For each puzzle, players need to use all the pieces to make a shape. To do it, they have to know about geometry (几何学). In the 18th century, the tangram was brought to the West and soon became popular there.
Luban lock
The Luban lock was first created by Lu Ban 2,000 years ago. The lock has a lot to do with solid geometry. It’s hard to separate the six pieces. However, it is usually easier to unlock a Luban lock than to put it back together. Now, there are Luban locks made up of nine or more pieces.

30. The underlined word “devices” in this passage is close in meaning to________.
A. methods B. books C. tools D. dictionaries
31. Which of the following is true about the AI glove?
A. It was invented by engineers from a foreign university.
B. It takes more than one second to finish the translation.
C. It costs more than most traditional translation devices.
D. It is a combination of special gloves and a smartphone app.
32. Which of the following examples goes against the descriptions of the AI glove?
A. A deaf student can ask the teacher questions with the AI glove without a translator.
B. An old deaf man finds the AI glove too heavy to carry when he goes to the market.
C. A deaf patient uses the AI glove to talk with a doctor about his mother’s illness.
D. A young deaf person uses the AI glove to order food in a restaurant by himself.
33. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The importance of communication.
B. An introduction to the AI glove.
C. The challenges faced by deaf people.
D. The working steps of the AI glove.
D
A. The Importance of Brain Science
B. How to Improve Students’ Learning Habits
C. The 4S Brain Training System: Building a Complete Thinking Chain
