For a long time, I kept a selection of books on a shelf next to my bed that I called my “heartbooks”. To qualify for a place on the shelf, a book had to be not only one I loved, but one that mattered. There was one book that never made it onto that shelf, though I read it in high school: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.
I can still remember the day I bought it. It was summer and I must have been 14 or 15. Desperate to get out of my house, I rode my bike into town and walked into the bookstore. I was going through the shelf of books on writing and it caught my eye. I picked it up, read a few pages, and bought it. Then I took it with me to a park, read the first few chapters, and opened my notebook to write.
It’s a fairly straightforward writing book. Goldberg’s method is simple: you choose a topic, set a timer, and write for 10, 15, or 20 minutes without picking up your pen. Free writing, timed writing, writing topics: anyone who has taken a creative writing class may have encountered these things. It’s not earth-shattering. There was nothing particularly new or unusual about the book so I can’t say why it attracted me so much. But it changed everything. I went from being someone who enjoyed writing to being a writer.
During my teen years and early twenties, following Goldberg’s method was at the core of my identity. No matter where I was or what I was doing, I filled notebooks. When I eventually started writing fiction, I did the same thing. The “I” in my notebooks became someone else, but I held to the same practice.
This writing practice led me to a writing group in Boston. It led me to my current career. It led me, in so many ways, to myself. Becoming a writer allowed me to become so many other things: an activist, a business owner, a farmer, a baker... Writing is where I found my confidence. It was where becoming curious about the world. From that, everything else has followed.
4. How did the author encounter Writing Down the Bones?
A. By following a selection of “heart books”. B. By referring to a book list about writing.
C. By recommendation of Natalie Goldberg. D. By seeking writing books on a bookshelf.
5. What does the word “earth-shattering” underlined in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Remarkable. B. Useful. C. Controversial. D. Amusing.
6. What can we infer about Writing Down the Bones?
A. It inspired the author to be a writer. B. It was the first novel the author read.
C. It made the author start to love writing. D. It is one of the books the author reads most.
7. Which of the following is answered by the last paragraph?
A. What is the author’s life like right now?
B. What did the author do in the writing group?
C. How has the writing practice shaped the author?
D. Why did the author give up the writing practice?
D 5. A 6. A 7. C
根据第二段“I was going through the shelf of books on writing and it caught my eye. I picked it up, read a few pages, and bought it.(我正在浏览写作书籍的书架,它引起了我的注意。我拿起它,读了几页,然后买了它。)”可知,作者是通过在书架上寻找写作书籍时遇到《Writing Down the Bones》这本书的。故选D。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词上一句“Free writing, timed writing, writing topics: anyone who has taken a creative writing class may have encountered these things.(自由写作,定时写作,写作主题:任何上过创意写作课的人都可能遇到过这些事情)”以及划线单词下一句“There was nothing particularly new or unusual about the book so I can’t say why it attracted me so much. (这本书并没有什么特别新颖或不同寻常的地方,所以我也说不出为什么它如此吸引我)”可推测,任何上过创意写作课的人都可能遇到过的事情在说中都有所描述,并且这本书没有什么特别新颖或不同寻常的地方。因此猜测划线单词earth-shattering意为“引人注目的”,和空前的“not”结合,指的是书中的方法并不是那么引人注目。故选A。
根据第三段“But it changed everything. I went from being someone who enjoyed writing to being a writer.(但它改变了一切。我从一个喜欢写作的人变成了一个作家)”可知,《Writing Down the Bones》这本书激发了作者成为作家的灵感。故选A。
根据最后一段“This writing practice led me to a writing group in Boston. It led me to my current career. It led me, in so many ways, to myself. Becoming a writer allowed me to become so many other things: an activist, a business owner, a farmer, a baker... Writing is where I found my confidence. It was where becoming curious about the world. From that, everything else has followed.(这种写作练习让我结识了一个位于波士顿的写作团体。
C
Doctor Dolittle, the well-known, fictional naturalist who famously possesses the ability to converse with animals and understand their languages has now inspired a high-paying science prize aimed at cracking the challenge of interspecies communication. A grand prize of $500,000, awaits whichever research team can make real progress: not just decoding the language of another species but using it to draw a reply from an animal. Last week, an initial $100,000 went to a US team studying dolphin whistles — after decades of recording bottlenose dolphins in Florida, they identified around 20 distinct messaging whistles.
The Coller Dolittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Coller, a vegan and animal lover, is unashamedly modelled on the Turing test That 20th-century test promotes efforts to design a machine capable of imitating human conversation, and became a touchstone in the evolution of AI. It also became a focus for concerns about machines tricking, even taking over, humans. The ability to commune with other species is likely to raise similar, unsettling questions as research progresses. If we were able to decode animal chatter, should this knowledge change how we treat them, whether as pets, labour or food? The prize presents a moral challenge and it forces us to reconsider our relationships with other species.
Philosopher Jonathan Birch, also a judge of the Jeremy Coller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is looking beyond the interspecies communication we have with pets, or that a farmer has with a sheepdog. Those relationships involve signalling and behavioural responses, Birch explains, “but that’s not telling us how animals communicate with each other... this prize is about understanding it so well that we can start to join the conversation.”
While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s (头足类动物) intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures. We might one day be able to understand what animals are saying — but there is no guarantee we will listen.
8. Why is Turing test mentioned in the passage?
A. To stress its role and value in AI progress. B. To show its difference from the Challenge.
C. To warn of concerns the Challenge may face. D. To show its use in interspecies communication.
9. Which research would Birch approve of to win the prize?
A. People communicating with their pets. B. People directing sheepdogs during work.
C. Researchers recording how cattle communicate. D. Researchers interacting with birds using whistles.
10. What does the “move the dial” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Make a change. B. Win the prize.
C. Slow the process. D. Continue the research.
11. What’s the author’s attitude toward the practical effect of the research?
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Dismissive.
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第二段中的“The Coller Dolittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Coller, a vegan and animal lover, is unashamedly modelled on the Turing test (图灵测试). That 20th-century test promotes efforts to design a machine capable of imitating human conversation, and became a touchstone in the evolution of AI. It also became a focus for concerns about machines tricking, even taking over, humans. The ability to commune with other species is likely to raise similar, unsettling questions as research progresses.
根据第三段“Philosopher Jonathan Birch, also a judge of the Jeremy Coller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is looking beyond the interspecies communication we have with pets, or that a farmer has with a sheepdog. Those relationships involve signalling and behavioural responses, Birch explains, “but that’s not telling us how animals communicate with each other... this prize is about understanding it so well that we can start to join the conversation.”(哲学家乔纳森·伯奇同时也是杰里米·科勒中心的评委,他强调,该挑战关注的跨物种交流,远不止我们与宠物之间、或是农民与牧羊犬之间的那种交流。伯奇解释道:“那些关系涉及信号传递和行为反应,但这并不能让我们了解动物之间是如何交流的……这个奖项的目的,是要充分理解动物间的交流方式,从而让我们能够参与到这种交流之中。”)”可知,伯奇认可的获奖研究应是能让人类参与到动物交流中的研究,“研究人员用口哨与鸟类互动”符合“参与交流”的特点。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures.(虽然科勒希望他的慈善项目能改变我们对动物的态度,但事实是,即使是突破性的研究,在很大程度上也未能move the dial动物的福利状况。最近关于头足类动物智力的研究,也未能阻止养殖这类动物的计划)”可知,“头足类动物智力研究未能阻止其养殖计划”是对“未能move the dial on their welfare”的举例说明,由此可推测“move the dial”意为“产生改变、带来影响”。故选A项。

A colorful colony of photosynthetic (光合的) cyanobacteria, known as blue-green algae (藻), has successfully powered a computer microprocessor for more than six months, according to a study published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science.
The algae-computer system was placed in the window of biochemist Paolo Bombell’s home. What he saw next really blew his mind: It sat there from February to August, and all the while it was working. And even after the microprocessor has been disconnected, the cyanobacteria device continues to produce current. “Given the right conditions of light, temperature and water, I cannot predict when it will stop,” said Bombelli.
Cyanobacteria harvest energy from sunlight and make it into food for themselves. For this study, the researchers put the power-providing microorganisms into a plastic and steel enclosure, about the size of an AA battery, along with an aluminum anode (铝正极). Throughout the experiment, the connected microprocessor was programmed to do a bunch of calculations, and then check its own work. It did this in a 45-minute period, followed by 15 minutes of standby, continuously for months with the cyanobacteria unit as its only power source.
Even though the algae rely on a light source to feed, the bio-system continued to produce enough power to run the microprocessor in the dark. The scientists basically put down this phenomenon to leftovers. When there was light, the cyanobacteria cooked up an over-abundance of food, and when it was dark the microorganisms kept chewing on the extras.
According to Chris Howe, senior author of the study, the results suggest that the little bio-based battery alternative could serve as a way to power small electronics without rare earth elements, which are in short supply and under growing demand. Plus, the system could also help bridge the electricity divide, providing another power supply for people in rural areas or low-income countries.
Though the experiment’s results are promising, it’s important to keep in mind that the computer processor tested uses very little energy — requiring only 0.3 microwatts to run. More research is needed to know exactly how much the tiny AA-battery-sized device could scale up. Howe said, Putting one on your roof isn’t going to provide the power supply for your house at this stage.”
12. Which of the following facts about the algae-computer system surprised Bombelli?
A. It can function without water.
B. It can convert light into power.
C. It can work for a long time.
D. It can stand high temperatures.
13. What can we learn about the bio-system from paragraph 4?
A. It stores light for later use.
B. It works normally in the dark.
C. It consumes little food in the dark.
D. It produces food for people.
14. What will the research focus on next?
A. How the device will work on the roof
B. Whether the device’s size can be reduced.
C. Whether the device can play a bigger role.
D. How the device will adapt to new environments.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Future of Household Electricity Supply
B. Blue-Green Algae: A New Source of Food
C. An Algae-Powered Device Runs Computer for Months
D. A Promising Bio-Battery Creates the Miracle
C 13. B 14. C 15. C

Everybody seems to have a unique way to learn a language. However, we all come to the same result of speaking at most two languages fluently. ____16____ Unbelievable as it may sound, those polyglots (通晓多语言者) have a good command of more than two languages, some of whom even can speak eight or more kinds of languages.
You may wonder how they do that and what their secrets are. But the fact is that they simply love learning languages. The one thing they all have in common is that they just find ways to enjoy the language-learning process. ____17____
You may have seen their faces when they are showing their colorful grammar charts and their carefully handmade flash cards, and their statistics about learning vocabulary using apps or even how they love to cook based on recipes in a foreign language. ____18____ But they always make sure it’s something that they personally enjoy.
____19____ Polyglots simply found ways how to enjoy the process, how to turn language learning from a boring school subject into a pleasant activity which you don’t mind doing every day.
So if you’ve also tried to learn a language and you gave up, thinking it’s too difficult or you don’t have the language talent, give it another try. ____20____ Maybe you’re also just one method away from becoming a polyglot.
A. All of them use different methods.
B. No wonder they can get the hang of so many languages.
C. They are talking about language learning as if it is great fun.
D. Don’t be afraid that you may fail in the end and just try again.
E. Everyone is no talents and no one have shortcut to learning languages.
F. But actually there exists another kind of language learners called polyglot.
G. Maybe you’re just one enjoyable method away from learning that language fluently.
F 17. C 18. A 19. E 20. G

Mr. Dalton gave ____33____ for my answer, and I ended up with a full mark.
When I returned 37 years later to visit him again, Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默氏症) had ____34____ his mind, but he still wore a happy grin.

“What is your name? ” is a question most frequently asked when people meet for the first time. But for me, it was the first challenge I encountered as an international student in Ireland.
The pronunciation system of the Chinese language is quite different from that of English. For native speakers of English, some Chinese words are rather difficult to pronounce. My given name Qiuyu (秋雨), for instance, happened to be a great challenge for many of them. Every time I gave a self-introduction, I had to explain how to pronounce my name at least five times, yet they still could not say it the way I did.
Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating my name after me over and over in front of thirty classmates. I really did not know whether I should continue correcting him or simply drop the matter. I feared that my classmates might grow tired of my efforts or even lose patience with me. After all, I did care about how others would think of me. I realized that if I didn’t stop, the entire lecture would be ruined. “It’s okay, professor,” I shrugged (耸肩). The awkward moment ended with the class erupting into laughter. I forced a smile, unsure how to respond further.
After that incident, I stopped acting as a “Chinese teacher.” Instead of correcting others when they were struggling to pronounce my name, I just smiled and nodded approvingly. This approach spared me the discomfort of having to over-explain. However, I soon found that by doing so, I might be losing something more important: the opportunity to share a small part of my cultural identity.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

One possible version:
In a class discussion, I was invited to explain the meaning of my name. Standing up, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. “My name, Qiuyu, combines the characters for autumn and rain in Chinese,” I began, my voice steady. “Autumn represents harvest and maturity, while rain symbolizes nourishment and growth. Together, they embody a time of abundance and renewal.” As I spoke, I noticed the rapt attention of my classmates, their eyes reflecting curiosity and respect. It was a moment of connection, a bridge built between cultures through the simple act of sharing my name.
Many of my classmates got interested and came up to me after class. They surrounded me, their questions pouring out like a stream. “What other names have beautiful meanings in Chinese?” “Can you teach us how to write our names in Chinese characters?” I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through me. I took out a piece of paper and began to sketch out characters, explaining each stroke and its significance. Through this interaction, I realized that by embracing my cultural identity, I was not only preserving my heritage but also enriching the lives of those around me. It was a small yet meaningful step towards fostering cultural understanding and appreciation.
