He instilled (灌输) in me the values,
That one day I’d pass on.
He taught me to face my fears,
Take each day as it comes,

A character in Shakespeare’s plays once said, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Any of these could apply to today’s sportsmen. Many still argue about the power of talent. Some claim that people are born great sportsmen, while others say it is only through devotion and hard work that they achieve their goals. Arguably though, it is not until their talents are recognized by the public that they truly have greatness thrust upon them.
With this acknowledgement of their “true worth” come all the trappings of modern-day celebrity: money, power, influence and responsibility. Whether we like it or hate it, modern-day sportsmen are role models of children everywhere, and these children will grow up alike, like it or not, imitating their lives to copying their idols. It is hard to stay above all this for sportsmen. To this fascination, particularly with the great influence of the media, it is more important for these sportsmen to shoulder their responsibility.
In the past few months alone, there have been many examples of questionable behaviors from sports icons. Sport stars of the present day are often mirroring the very worst aspects of society, a fact that the self-righteous (自以为是的) anger of the modern press has been quick to point out. It would be wrong for us to expect sportsmen to be saints. It would also be wrong for us to think that their behavior is clearly different from the sportsmen they grew up watching, but with the all-seeing eye of modern media, it is a different world, and different standards must be expected.
Of course, there is no duty for sportsmen to be good role models. There are no prison sentences, no fines, no community service—unless their behaviors are illegal. Unless they break the law, it is entirely up to them as to whether or not they think their behavior is proper. Furthermore, measuring the true influence their decisions have on their followers is absolutely impossible. Some will rise against their idols, seeing them in a new light and not accepting their actions. Others may copy their heroes’ actions, using them as a shield (盾牌) when accused of (控告) the same crimes.
It is undeniable that the actions of sportsmen will influence the lives of those who worship (崇拜) them. Modern-day sportsmen are almost ideals of today’s world, and their actions are watched carefully by millions all over the world. Some may complain against it, denying their influence on these children’s lives. Others may be aware of it but not respect it, while many both may be aware of it and respect it. In a word, you do not choose whether you are a role model. All you can do is to decide how to act when greatness is thrust upon you.
31. In Paragraph 1, the author tries to stress ______.
A. the core characteristic to become great sportsmen nowadays
B. sportsmen become great when their gifts are recognized by people
C. different ways for sportsmen to achieve success and greatness
D. sportsmen achieve greatness through their devotion and efforts
32. The underlined phrase “thrust upon” most probably means ______.
A. forced on B. removed from C. related to D. pulled off
33. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advise the media to choose proper events to report.
B. To inform the public that sportsmen are no role models.
C. To argue that sportsmen should not be expected as heroes.
D. To remind the sportsmen of their social responsibilities.
D
①Are you avoiding pain or living with purpose? There are two ways we can take in any given situation: one is the path of avoiding pain in the moment, and the other is the more difficult path of delaying (推迟) pleasure for a bigger purpose.
②Some people don’t see the value in having patience during difficult times or working toward a goal; they want to lose weight now and would rather buy the latest, greatest mobile phones than saving for retirement (退休). We often make our life choices according to how we can avoid pain in the moment and, in doing so, fail to see that the path of delayed gratification (满足) is sometimes where the real solutions to our problems lie.
③Studies show that delayed gratification is one of the most important personal qualities of successful people. People who learn how to manage their need to be satisfied develop more in their jobs, relationships and health than people who give in to it.
④A well-known study done at Stanford University in the 1960s explains a lot about why it’s beneficial (有益的) to delay gratification. In the study, children were placed in a room with one marshmallow (棉花软糖) on a plate. The lead researcher gave the children an easy instruction: You can eat the marshmallow now, or wait 15 minutes and get two marshmallows. The researchers found that the children who were able to wait for the second marshmallow without eating the first one scored higher on standardized tests, had better health, and were less likely to have behavior problems.
⑤Delaying gratification isn’t a new concept. It was presented many years ago, which can even be dated back to 300 B.C. Aristotle saw that the reason why so many people were unhappy was that they mixed up pleasure for true happiness.
⑥True happiness, according to Aristotle, is about developing habits and staying with yourself with people who grow your soul. This allows you to move toward your greatest natural ability. True happiness needs delaying pleasure, and putting in the time, discipline, and patience required to achieve a goal instead of feeling good now.
⑦A life of purpose, together with the seeking of true happiness, creates real joy. It keeps your happiness pretty steady (稳定的) throughout your life. So, which path would you like to take?
34. What can we know from the passage?
A. Avoiding pain in the moment is more difficult.
B. We often make choices based on how we can stay away from pain right now.
C. Delayed gratification is the most necessary personal qualities of successful people.
D. According to the study, people who delay gratification probably have behavior problems.
35. What does the underlined word “concept” in Paragraph ⑤ probably mean?
A. 计划 B. 意思 C. 选择 D. 概念
36. According to the passage, which of the following situations is an example of delayed gratification?
A. Finish all your homework first on the weekend, then go out to play with friends.
B. Save money for the bike you want, and spend your pocket money on snacks and toys right away.
C. Review for 30 minutes every day to get good final exam grades, while playing on the phone through short videos for 30 minutes every day too.
D. Buy the favorite game skin with your pocket money right away, although you might have no money for meals in the next few weeks.
37. What’s the structure of this passage?
A. ①|②③ | ④⑤⑥ |⑦
B. ① |② | ⑤ |③④ | ⑥ |⑦
C. ① |②③④ | ⑤⑥| ⑦
D. ① |② |③ | ④⑤ |⑥⑦
