My mom often tells me stories. One of her stories is about the school picnic. At that time, schools didn't have a sports day like we have now. Instead, the biggest day for them was the School Picnic Day.
The School Picnic Day was usually held on the last school day in June. On that day, kids played interesting games. No one cared who won and who lost.
Soon, it was lunchtime. Parents always packed (收拾) picnic baskets for the kids. They filled them with as many good foods as they could afford.

Sleeping is something that all creatures (生物) do. We all need sleep, but different creatures sleep in different ways, according to the conditions of their environments. You can, in fact, tell a lot about a creature by studying the way it sleeps.
For example, for humans, it's natural to lie down on one's back or stomach and fall asleep. That's easy enough to do when you are at the top of the food chain (食物链) and don't have natural enemies. Lying down to sleep leaves one in danger, so only those animals with few enemies regularly sleep like that.
Being careful and keeping safe are the most important for many creatures when sleeping.
Did you know that elephants sleep standing up? The same is true for cows, horses, and sheep. When these animals go into the dream state, they lie down. But most of their sleep happens while they are standing.
Many of these larger land animals depend on running fast to protect them from natural enemies. Their ability to sleep while standing helps them a lot if their enemies come when they are sleeping.
Imagine how dangerous it would be if they had to wake from sleep while lying on the ground and then get to their feet before escaping.
Birds sleep in a similar way, probably for similar reasons. They lock their claws around the high branch (树枝), and go to sleep. This allows them to enter the sleep state in a safe place where their enemies can't reach.
In most cases, the smaller the creature is, the more sleep it needs. Giraffes need only two hours of sleep every day while bats (蝙蝠) sleep for nearly twenty hours every day. Healthy adult humans need about eight hours of sleep a day.
