During the past year, Alyssa, from Prestatyn, Denbighshire has made more than 200 blankets using almost 10,000 waste crisp packets (薯片包装袋).
The blankets have been given to organizations which support homeless people inLlandudno, Wrexham and Rhyl.
Each one takes an hour to make, but Alyssa said the effort was worth it because it helps homeless people and stops the crisp packets from being thrown in the bin.
“The bit I don’t like is washing them,” she said. “Each packet has to be opened out so it’s flat and then washed in the sink. In our era of constant digital distraction, a wave of “focus apps” promises to help us reclaim our productivity by blocking interruptions and using gamification (游戏化) to encourage deep work. But do these apps truly help, or are they just another form of digital noise?
The main challenge to focus is self-regulation. When a task feels boring or stressful, we naturally seek relief, often turning to our smartphones. While there’s little evidence that our inborn ability to focus has declined, habits like multitasking and frequent digital interruptions can make us more easily distracted. To fight this, apps like the popular “Focus Friend” have emerged.
These apps employ psychological principles to guide behavior. “Focus Friend,” for example, uses a virtual character that knits (编织) peacefully as you work. If you open a banned app, the knitting comes undone. If you complete a focus session, this system uses immediate rewards, like digital items for your character, to make up for your devotion to the potentially unpleasant work. It also uses the “commitment and consistency” principle — starting a timer feels like a promise to yourself, which you’re then motivated to keep.
However, scientific research on their effectiveness is limited. One study found that while users enjoyed gamified apps, they didn’t often use them and found simpler strategies (like setting a phone to greyscale (灰度模式)) more effective for reducing usage. High app store ratings for “Focus Friend” suggest user enjoyment, but enjoyment doesn’t necessarily translate to improved focus or output quality.
If you decide to try a focus app, use it wisely. Schedule specific sessions for well-defined tasks, and notice the urge to check your phone without acting on it. After a week, critically assess if the app helped you make real progress. Be mindful of possible problems: these apps can’t judge your work’s value, so you might stay “focused” on unimportant tasks. Ultimately, while an app can help handle the pull of your phone, lasting focus requires internal discipline — learning to notice sudden distracting wants and consciously choosing to return to what matters.
8. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. Smartphones are the main source of distraction.
B. Our natural focus ability has greatly weakened.
C. Self-discipline lies at the heart of focus problems.
D. Multitasking is an effective way to get work done.
9. How does “Focus Friend” try to guide users’ behavior?
A. By completely blocking access to a banned app.
B. By using psychological tricks and instant rewards.
C. By offering professional consulting sessions.
D. By simplifying phone functions to grayscale mode.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the current research on focus apps?
A. Strongly supportive. B. Cautiously doubtful.
C. Clearly disapproving. D. Fully convinced.
11. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Focus Apps: Productivity Tools or Digital Noise?
B. Focus Apps: Effective Solutions or Passing Trends?
C. The Psychological Principles Behind Focus Apps
D. The Limitations of Gamified Focus Apps
D
Sometimes it’s not sunny enough to depend on solar power, or windy enough to turn the windmill (风车). So, Finnish researchers have invented a year-round, 24/7 energy source: a battery made from sand.
Markku Ylonen and Tommi Eronen are the young engineers who came up with the idea of building a sand battery. They founded a company called Polar Night Energy to develop their concept. Now, they’ve placed their first sand battery in a power plant in southwest Finland.
So how do you build a sand battery? Polar Night poured 100 tons of low-grade sand into a container. Then they charged the sand battery with cheap solar or wind energy until it was 500 degrees Celsius. As anybody who’s ever burnt their soles (鞋底) on a hot beach knows, sand stores heat very well. Polar Night’s plan is in its name: they want to use that hot sand to warm homes and other buildings through Finland’s long, cold winter nights.
As the sand warms up, a heat exchanger in the sand will circulate (循环) the hot air until it’s distributed (分布) throughout the sand battery. Ylonen and Eronen say their battery will be able to keep the sand at a toasty 500 degrees Celsius for several months.
Since green energy is hard to come by in winter, that’s when the price shoots up. Polar Night’s plan is to charge their sand battery before the days get short. “Whenever there’s this high surge of available green electricity, we want to be able to get it into storage really quickly," said Ylonen, as reported by the BBC.
Most batteries require lithium (锂) — which is expensive to extract (提取) from the earth — so increasing the production of sand batteries could be one more useful tool in the fight against ruining the planet beyond human habitation. But we can’t get too excited. A recently released UN report named sand the Earth’s second most exploited (被开发的) resource after water, and warned of a global sand crisis (危机). Used for constructing roads and buildings, sand is our most mined material.
12. Why are solar power and windmill mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To bring up a creative suggestion.
B. To stress the importance of the sun and wind.
C. To introduce the topic of a special battery.
D. To praise Finnish researchers for their contributions.
13. Why does the author refer to the example of someone burning the soles on a hot beach?
A. To explain the pain while walking on the beach.
B. To explain the purpose of the Polar Night’s plan.
C. To explain the reason for building sand batteries.
D. To explain the characteristic of sand storing heat.
14. What do the underlined words“shoots up” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Reduces rapidly. B. Cuts rapidly. C. Increases quickly. D. Forms gradually.
15. What does the recently released UN report suggest?
A. Lithium is easy to extract from the earth.
B. Sand is in danger of being over-exploited.
C. Water is more precious natural resource than sand.
D. Increasing the production of sand batteries is harmful.

Why Literature Matters
When we think of literature, we often picture dusty books on library shelves — stories written long ago by authors we’ll never meet. ____16____ It speaks to us across time and space, offering both escape and understanding.
Good literature serves as both a mirror and a window. As a mirror, it reflects our own experiences back to us. ____17____ We recognize ourselves in their struggles and joys, feeling less alone in the world. This connection can be deeply comforting, especially during the confusing years of adolescence.
____18____ It allows us to step into lives completely different from our own. We can walk through the streets of Victorian London with Charles Dickens, feel the weight of racism with Maya Angelou, or experience the challenges of immigrating to a new country with contemporary authors. Through these literary journeys, our capacity for empathy grows.
Reading literature also strengthens our minds in unique ways. Unlike watching a film, where images are provided for us, reading requires us to actively build worlds in our imagination. ____19____ This mental exercise helps develop critical thinking skills that are valuable in every area of life.
In a world of quick clicks, literature invites us to slow down. It asks us to sit with complex ideas and to care about people who exist only on pages. ____20____
A. Perhaps that is why literature truly matters.
B. Literature also builds empathy by acting as a window.
C. Literature, however, is far from dust or distance.
D. This process improves concentration and creativity.
E. We see characters facing dilemmas similar to our own.
F. It helps us understand the world through different eyes.
G. Young people today read less than previous generations.

While walking along the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Barrow was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I rushed into the sub way station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching. I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court (美食广场) was attracting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor’s eyes, it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell. I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for some food. But he never did. My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached. “Excuse me, sir,” began the husband. “We just finished eating and our appetite wasn’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use?” The kind stranger handed a large container with food. “Thank you.” came the grateful reply. Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor’s response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal. He opened mouth and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear. Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, without a hat and gloves. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged. People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My neighbor was the only one taking action.

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了专注力应用程序的作用、原理、研究情况及使用建议 。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“The main challenge to focus is self-regulation. When a task feels boring or stressful, we naturally seek relief, often turning to our smartphones. (专注面临的主要挑战是自我调节。当一项任务让人感到无聊或有压力时,我们自然会寻求解脱,通常会求助于智能手机。)”可知,自我约束是专注问题的核心。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“These apps employ psychological principles to guide behavior. (这些应用程序运用心理学原理来引导行为。例如,“专注伙伴”使用一个虚拟角色,在你工作时安静地编织。如果你打开一个被禁止的应用程序,编织就会解开。如果你完成了一个专注时段,这个系统会使用即时奖励,比如为你的角色提供数字物品,来弥补你对可能令人不快的工作的投入。)”可知,“专注伙伴”通过心理技巧和即时奖励来引导用户行为。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“However, scientific research on their effectiveness is limited. (然而,关于它们有效性的科学研究有限。一项研究发现,虽然用户喜欢游戏化的应用程序,但他们并不经常使用,而且发现更简单的策略(比如将手机设置为灰度模式)对减少使用更有效。“专注伙伴”在应用商店的高评分表明用户喜欢,但喜欢并不一定意味着专注力或输出质量有所提高。)”可知,作者对目前关于专注力应用程序的研究持谨慎怀疑态度。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“In our era of constant digital distraction, a wave of “focus apps” promises to help us reclaim our productivity by blocking interruptions and using gamification (游戏化) to encourage deep work. But do these apps truly help, or are they just another form of digital noise? (在我们这个不断受到数字干扰的时代,一波“专注力应用程序”承诺通过屏蔽干扰和使用游戏化来鼓励深度工作,帮助我们恢复生产力。但这些应用程序真的有帮助吗,还是它们只是另一种形式的数字噪音?)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讨论了专注力应用程序是生产力工具还是数字噪音,所以“专注力应用:生产力工具还是数字噪音?”适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. C 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
62. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My neighbor was the only one taking action.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I went to buy food from the food court, with tears welling up in my eyes.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
My neighbor was the only one taking action. Quickly putting aside his miracle meal, my neighbour stood up and guided the elderly man to share his seat. Hardly had he seated himself when my neighbour tenderly put his jacket over the elderly man’s shoulders. He said with a smile, “Can you help out?”, passing the meal and placing the steaming cup of soup in his hands. The old man obviously was astonished, but he accepted it with gratitude. Seeing this, I was so ashamed of myself. At the moment, my head and heart stopped battling, determined to buy a meal for my neighbour.
I went to buy food from the food court, with tears welling up in my eyes. What my neighbour said exactly spoke my mind. Despite a sense of guilt in my heart, I felt it was my job to do the same. After a while, I came back with steaming soup and a sandwich. I approached my neighbour respectfully, “Can you help me out?” I asked “Why not?” He responded jokingly. People around cast admiring look on me, which made me relieved. It wasn’t until that day that I truly understand the meaning of sharing. I left the subway station, feeling warmer, even if the bitter cold wind filled the air.
