Location: Midlands Arts Centre, Bristol
From the Other Side
An exhibition on horror? It might not sound a good one for those who are not brave. However, you needn’t worry: this collection is far different from scary paintings. Instead, these artworks of 19 Australian artists aim to raise questions about horror in the women’s views.

Modes and Characters
This museum exhibition is taking a look at the history of modern graphic design and explores how computer-based publishing technology has changed the world of design. Bruce Springsteen played at MetLife Stadium last weekend in New Jersey, which is about an hour’s drive from my home. I’ve been a huge fan of his music for a long time, but I’ve never seen him at a concert. There were still tickets available, and yet I held back. I didn’t want to go there alone.
I’m an independent woman who has lived alone since graduating from college. I love living alone and I need lots of solo (单独的) time to recharge my batteries from a demanding job. I enjoy spending time with small groups of friends and seeing my brother and his family, but I hesitate when leisure time involves large crowds, such as concerts or even movies. I don’t have social anxiety, so I often wonder why I hesitate when it comes to going somewhere alone.
A previous study stated that people hesitate about doing things by themselves because they’re afraid of how they’ll be perceived. The good news is that no one is going to notice that. The reason is “the spotlight effect” which has been tested and proven through the use of bright yellow T-shirts. Students were forced to wear these bright shirts to class and were asked how many students they thought would notice them. The subjects thought, on average, about 50% of the class would notice them. In reality, fewer than 20%of the students noticed the shirts.
I believe that some activities, such as listening to one’s favorite music at a concert, would be greater pleasure if it was a shared experience. However, according to some studies, people actually had about as much fun doing fun activities alone as they thought they would be accompanied by friends.
If enjoying the free time we have depends on finding others to join us, we’ll go from having serious FOMO(Fear of missing out) to absolutely MO as people work more hours and have less free time these days. So if I had another chance to go to Bruce’s concert, even alone, I would surely go.
4. What was the reason for the author’s missing Bruce’s concert?
A. A lack of time. B. Having no companion.
C. The long travel distance. D. Being unable to get a ticket.
5. What can we know about the author?
A. She enjoys socializing with familiar people.
B. She suffers from severe social anxiety.
C. She prizes family ties over friendships.
D. She gets bored with her present job.
6. What does “the spotlight effect” refer to?
A. The fear of being judged by others.
B. The fact that bright clothes attract more attention.
C. The tendency to focus on what’s happening around us.
D. The belief that we’re being noticed more than we really are.
7. What does the author aim to do in the last paragraph?
A. To express her fondness for Bruce.
B To explain the busyness of our daily life.
C. To encourage people to do activities alone.
D. To stress the close relationship between people.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C

根据文章第一段“Bruce Springsteen played at MetLife Stadium last weekend in New Jersey, which is about an hour’s drive from my home. I’ve been a huge fan of his music for a long time, but I’ve never seen him at a concert. There were still tickets available, and yet I held back. I didn’t want to go there alone.( Bruce Springsteen上周末在新泽西州的大都会MetLife Stadium演出,那里距离我家大约一个小时的车程。我一直是他的超级歌迷,但我从来没有在音乐会上见过他。虽然还有票,但我还是忍住了不去。我不想一个人去。)”可知,作者不去听Bruce Springsteen的演唱会是因为作者不想一个人去,也就是因为没有同伴。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“I enjoy spending time with small groups of friends and seeing my brother and his family, but I hesitate when leisure time involves large crowds, such as concerts or even movies.(我喜欢和一小群朋友在一起,也喜欢去看哥哥和他的家人,但当我的休闲时间涉及到人群时,比如音乐会或电影,我就会犹豫。)” 故选A。
根据划线短语下文“Students were forced to wear these bright shirts to class and were asked how many students they thought would notice them. The subjects thought, on average, about 50%of the class would notice them. In reality, fewer than 20%of the students noticed the shirts.(学生们被迫穿着这些鲜艳的衬衫去上课,并被问及他们认为有多少学生会注意到这些衬衫。研究对象认为,平均而言,班上约有50%的人会注意到他们。实际上,只有不到20%的学生注意到了这些T恤。)”可知,划线短语“the spotlight effect”指的是,有时候我们会以为别人会关注我们,但是并非如此。也就是说,认为自己受到了比实际更多的关注。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“If enjoying the free time we have depends on finding others to join us, we’ll go from having serious FOMO(Fear of missing out)to absolutely MO as people work more hours and have less free time these days. So if I had another chance to go to Bruce’s concert, even alone, I would surely go.(如果享受我们拥有的空闲时间取决于寻找其他人加入我们,那么随着人们工作时间越来越长,空闲时间越来越少,我们将从严重的FOMO(害怕错过)变成绝对的MO(错过)。所以如果我有机会再去看布鲁斯的演唱会,即使只有我一个人,我也一定会去的。)”可知,作者认为如果享受我们拥有的空闲时间取决于寻找其他人加入我们,那么随着人们工作时间越来越长,空闲时间越来越少,我们将从严重的FOMO(害怕错过)变成绝对的MO(错过)。可知,作者在最后一段鼓励人们独自活动。故选C。

Imagine if it were easy for everyone to get to the seashore, to smell the sea winds and to feel seawater on their skin. Wouldn’t it be great if people with walking difficulty could also get closer to the ocean to enjoy the thrill of a sunset, watching the sun’s rays light up the waves? The good news is that things are moving in the right direction!
In a CDC study, around 14% of adults in the US report a mobility disability, defined as serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs. This can make vacation planning a challenge and put some destinations off-limits. But technology companies like Mobi-mat are making a day at the beach for people with limited mobility a reality.
Mobi-mat has developed some exciting innovations like non-slip roll-out accessibility mats(垫子). These function like red carpets at movie premieres(首映), taking people with special needs right to the seashore. They are made of a fine nylon material that is designed for people who use wheelchairs or may otherwise need a firmer surface to cross the sand.
More cities are working to make enjoyment of the beach much more wide-ranging in other creative ways based on regional conditions. The town of Jupiter in Florida has opened up access to its beaches to people who have trouble going up and down stairs via three new wide wooden walkovers. The Miami Herald recently reported on the upcoming construction of a wheelchair-accessible beachfront observation platform, and upgraded park with adaptive playground and exercise equipment for people with disabilities in Miami Beach.
Inspired by creative innovation, forward-looking policymakers and companies, and the shared demands of disabled people who are calling for better access to beautiful beach locations, it seems that many more people of all abilities will be able to head to the beach.
8. What is the good news mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. The seashore becomes the hottest destination.
B. The ocean environment changes for the better.
C. Beaches are more accessible to the disabled.
D. Approaching the sea benefits disabled people.
9. What can we learn about the mat from Mobi-mat?
A. It offers a firm surface. B. It originates from movies.
C. It replaces wheelchairs. D. It functions beneath the sand.
10. What can be inferred about the measures in Jupiter and Miami?
A. They’re well behind schedule.
B. They center on ocean protection.
C. They need to be more creative.
D. They’re tailored to local conditions.
11. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a friendly move.
B. To recommend a treatment.
C. To advertise beautiful beaches.
D. To report findings of a study.
C 9. A 10. D 11. A

Do you ever find yourself randomly thinking back to the times we wandered, collecting wildflowers and smiling beneath the sky? That feeling is often referred to as nostalgia (怀旧).
Psychologists have defined nostalgia as a self-conscious, social emotion, bittersweet but dominantly positive. It comes from our happy memories and our desire to go back to the past and reconnect with the people we cared about. Often, nostalgia involves sensory stimuli. On some occasions, the smell of autumn leaves might generate a fierce longing for your childhood home. Almost everyone can experience nostalgia, although its object tends to vary throughout life. One survey conducted by the psychologist Krystine Irene Batcho found that younger people felt more nostalgia for pets, toys, and holidays than did older people, who felt it more strongly for music.
In contrast to its links to negative emotions, nostalgia doesn’t make us sadder. Rather, nostalgia is a defensive response to unhappiness, one that brings relief from a negative mood. Research from 2006 shows that nostalgia can actually strengthen social ties, improve self-esteem, and uplift our mood. Other studies suggest that it can also enhance our view of life’s meaning, reduce fear of death, boost spirituality, and increase optimism.
Scholars remain uncertain about the precise mechanism behind the effectiveness of nostalgia; however, some suggest that reflecting on joyful memories strengthens our sense of self-worth and belonging, particularly during times of loneliness or self-doubt. Its power lets the happiness of the past overcome the current unpleasantness, offering a bit of escape from tough times. To form stronger connections, we can establish traditions around shared past experiences in families, friend groups, and workplaces. Observing special occasions like childhood sports or post-college meetups can give us something to look forward to.
Perhaps because it is so powerful and complex, nostalgia has received magical treatment from poets and writers. “The past is hidden somewhere outside the realm (领域), beyond the reach of intellect,” Marcel Proust wrote.
12. Why does the author mention “autumn leaves” in the second paragraph?
A. To illustrate the complexity of nostalgia.
B To emphasize the joyful nature of nostalgia.
C. To clarify nostalgia’s connection to our senses.
D. To stress individual variety of experiencing nostalgia.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The mismatch between two findings.
B. The potential benefits of nostalgia.
C. The impact of nostalgia on personal mood.
D. The mechanisms behind nostalgia’s effects.
14. What does the author suggest us do in paragraph 4?
A. Create shared traditions for bonding and joy. B. Record the social gatherings regularly.
C. Recognize the unnecessary social gatherings. D. Say no to the concept of escapism.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Nostalgia: Why We Should Avoid Reflecting on the Past
B. Nostalgia: A Shelter Against the Unhappiness of Our Life
C. A Nostalgia Warning: Our Mental Health Being Attacked
D. Power of Nostalgia: Struggling for an Irreplaceable Present

根据文章第三段的内容“In contrast to its links to negative emotions, nostalgia doesn’t make us sadder. Rather, nostalgia is a defensive response to unhappiness, one that brings relief from a negative mood. Other studies suggest that it can also enhance our view of life’s meaning, reduce fear of death, boost spirituality, and increase optimism.”(与它与负面情绪的联系相反,怀旧并不会让我们更悲伤。

Its power lets the happiness of the past overcome the current unpleasantness, offering a bit of escape from tough times.”(学者们仍然不确定怀旧效应背后的确切机制;然而,一些人认为,回忆快乐的记忆可以增强我们的自我价值感和归属感,尤其是在孤独或自我怀疑的时候。

As a teacher, I’ve always believed in the importance of teaching my students more than just academics. However, I was growing increasingly concerned about a new problem: plastic waste. I often noticed my students casually throwing away plastic bottles and wrapper around the school grounds. It pained me to see the beautiful campus littered, and I knew that lecturing them about environmental responsibility wasn’t enough. They needed to see and feel the impact firsthand.
One Friday afternoon, after witnessing another pile of plastic waste near the playground, I decided to take action. I called a meeting with my class and shared my concerns. “This Saturday,” I announced, “we’re going on a field trip, but it won’t be to the usual places. We’re going to spend a day collecting rubbish in the city. "
The students’ reactions were mixed. Complaints erupted immediately. “Why do we have to pick up rubbish? Isn’t this someone else’s job?” Sofia shouted. Emily added, “It’s going to be so hot this weekend! Do we really have to?”
I took a deep breath and tried to inspire them. “Think about it,” I said, “each bottle or wrapper you pick up can be recycled into something useful. Moreover, we’re helping to keep our city clean. It’s a good way to show respect for our community and our planet, isn’t it?”
I saw a few doubtful faces, but also some nods. Sofia hesitated before saying, “Well, I guess it does sound important.”
On Saturday morning the students gathered at the school, equipped with gloves and rubbish bags. There were still some complaints about the heat and the task ahead as we boarded the bus. The city center, usually active, awaited us with its unfortunate blanket of litter.
Upon arrival, I split them into small groups and assigned each a section of the streets to clean. The students looked around, their faces tightening into frowns as they saw rubbish scattered in every direction. “This is a lot more than I thought,” Emily sighed, looking at the piles of rubbish.

By the end of the day, the students were tired but proud of their efforts.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I called on my students to start working. “Come on, everybody! We can do this. Let’s show others what we are capable of. Imagine the difference we can make together!” I encouraged them. Reluctantly, they began to move, picking up cans, bottles, and wrappers. But gradually, they started working together, sharing stories, and even laughing at the occasional odd items they found. Despite the hard work and the hot sun, the students found joy in seeing the streets transform in front of their eyes. “Hey, we’re actually making a difference,” Emily remarked, her bag now half-full. “This place looks better already.”
By the end of the day, the students were tired but proud of their efforts. They had collected a significant amount of rubbish, and the streets looked noticeably cleaner. On the bus ride back, the students discussed ways to keep the school grounds clean and even proposed setting up recycling bins around the campus. Clearly this experience had a great impact on them. The once-reluctant students were now advocates for environmental responsibility, demonstrating their newfound respect for the community and the planet. This day of hard work had turned into a meaningful lesson they would carry with them for years to come.

B. To explain the busyness of our daily life.
C. To encourage people to do activities alone.
D. To stress the close relationship between people.
C
C Beaches are more accessible to the disabled.

On Saturday morning, the students gathered at the school, equipped with gloves and rubbish bags.
