A Simple Guide to Making a Bird Feeder
Birdwatching is a fun hobby.Making a bird feeder from old things you find at home is an easy, low⁃cost, and good way to help the environment.
You can use different clean containers (容器) from home, like plastic bottles, milk boxes, or food cans.A 1-liter plastic bottle is a common choice because it keeps water out and is easy to get.Remember, safety comes first.Always wash the container well and check that there are no sharp parts that could harm the birds.
Here are some steps to make a feeder from a plastic bottle:
♣ Wash an empty bottle and take off the paper around it.
♣ About 3 inches from the bottom, carefully make two small holes on opposite sides.
♣ Put a wooden spoon through the holes. The round part of the spoon should face up to hold seeds.
♣ Make a few very small holes in the bottom of the bottle so rainwater can run out.
♣ Fill the bottle with bird food through the top.
♣ Tie a strong string around the top of the bottle and hang it on a high tree branch, away from cats.
This feeder gives out seeds slowly when birds stand on the spoons. You can also try other ideas.Putting the feeder in a calm, safe place is important to bring birds to visit.

Did you know that dunes (沙丘) can move?
Sounds like something from a science fiction movie, but this happens in real life.A new study from Nanjing University found that the dunes in western China’s deserts are moving more slowly now.
According to the study, dunes form in places with a lot of sand and little water. They change shape and move depending on how the wind blows.
The team studied dunes in western China’s deserts using pictures from 1986 to 2021.Satellites took these pictures from the sky.The team found out that the movement speed of dunes has slowed down by 30 percent. In the area with the fastest drop, the speed of dune movement has dropped from about 9 meters each year to 4.5 meters each year. The main reason is that the wind is not so strong, so it carries less sand, noted China Science Daily.
This finding supports the idea of “global wind stilling”.It means wind near the ground is decelerating worldwide. ▲ As the slower wind takes away less sand, sand storms happen less often. This helps plants grow back in dry areas. However, slower near⁃ground wind can also make wind power work less well.It might also make it harder for pollution to go away, said researchers from Nanjing University.
This shows us that everything in nature is connected. The wind, the sand, the plants and even our weather work together. What we do can also bring changes to our world. If we watch and learn, we can find better ways to live with our planet.
56.Which of the following is TRUE about the movement of dunes?
A.It is becoming faster because of stronger winds. B.It has slowed down because of less wind.
C.It is not affected by changes in wind speed. D.It will stop completely in the near future.
57.Which of the following shows the speed of dune movement over time?(x=time y=speed)
58.What does the underlined word “decelerating” probably mean in the passage?
A.Calming down. B.Cutting down. C.Slowing down. D.Letting down.
59.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 5?
A.This change in wind speed has both good and bad effects.
B.Sand is the main reason for the formation of deserts.
C.Satellites can easily track the movement of wind.
D.Plants in dry areas need more water to survive.
60.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.The Dangers of Moving Dunes B.How Satellites Help Study Deserts
C.Why Dunes Are Moving More Slowly D.The Importance of Wind Power in China

Mental (心理上的) health among young students in China is getting more attention from schools, parents and the public.China’s Ministry of Education introduced 10 new rules on October 9, 2025.They focus on reducing school stress, improving sleep and cutting down their screen time.
The first goal is to make students feel less anxious at school. There will be less homework and fewer tests. Some schools may also have one“no-homework day”each week.
Another goal is to make students stronger and healthier. The rules suggest that students do sports for at least two hours a day.Schools will hold sports competitions at both class and grade levels.“These activities let children really enjoy sports.Competitions also help them build mental strength,”said Wang Pan, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission.
At the same time, schools should help students get enough sleep.Kids should not come to school too early for classes.Lunch breaks may be longer so that they can have more rest.To develop healthy internet habits, the rules do not allow smartphone use in class and ask families to cut down kids’ screen time at home.
These methods can meet students’new needs. They are also building a complete mental health support system for students, said People’s Education Magazine.
