I was born under the Chinese zodiac sign (生肖) of the Horse, which comes around every 12 years in a cycle. The year 2026 is the seventh Year of the Horse that I have welcomed.
My lifelong friend Han, a famous Chinese artist, is good at painting horses. With each important event in my life, he has always presented me a spirited and elegant horse painting.
The memory of my 80th birthday remains lively to this day. My friend Han painted 80 horses, each one completely unique. When this artwork arrived in Tianjin by express delivery and was unrolled before my eyes, there was a breathtaking artistic beauty. Later, when I held a public-benefit painting exhibition at the Suzhou Museum to support the development of folk culture, he came all the way to Suzhou to support me. He also gifted me another horse painting titled Qiji Tu.
From the horses he paints for me, I see his wishes for my health and encouragement for me. The horse has become the most direct and beautiful language between us.
Of course, my own stories with the horse are countless in their own right.
My Chinese zodiac sign is “Horse.” The character for my family name “Feng” is made up of the character for “horse” and the two brush strokes for “ice,” which is why the family name “Feng” is referred to as “two horses” in Chinese. The “Ji” in my given name also includes the character for horse.
This year, in particular, brings me special joy as it is once again the Year of the Horse. The spirit of the horse is the qualities I have always valued.
4. How old is the writer this year?
A. 72. B. 80. C. 84.
5. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “unrolled” in Paragraph 3?
A. Unlocked. B. Unfolded. C. Unbuilt.
6. What do we know about the writer from the passage?
A. He’s not happy this year because he’s getting older.
B. He has made great efforts to develop Chinese folk culture.
C. He receives a horse painting from his friend on his birthday every year.
7. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The connection between the writer and the horse.
B. The moving stories between the writer and his friend.
C. The spirit of the horse in Chinese culture is valuable.

Paying attention to your study habits is important if you want to learn better. Bad habits can slow you down. If you don’t stop and think about how you study, you might miss out on easier or smarter ways to study. This is called reflective learning.
Reflection means thinking carefully about something to understand it better. It is not about being negative—it’s about asking questions, making good choices, and learning from what you do.
Reflective learning can help you in many ways. First, it helps you plan and decide what to do first. With so many things like school, family, friends and hobbies, you can feel stressed. Reflection helps you manage your time and choose what’s most important. It also helps you set and reach goals. When you connect school goals to your life goals, you’ll feel more excited to learn and find better ways to succeed. Reflection can also help you stop putting things off and feel less stressed. By thinking about when and why you avoid tasks, you can change those habits and feel more confident.
Everyone reflects in their own way. There’s no one right way to do it. You don’t have to see it as extra (额外的) homework. You can practice reflection anytime while you’re learning.
To reflect well, you can try tools like a reflective journal (日志). In the journal, write what happened, what you did, what you learned and what you could do better. You can also include feedback (反馈), pictures or notes. Try to write often, focus on one topic, ask yourself questions and review your writing to find useful patterns. There are no wrong answers, so just be honest in your reflection and keep learning.
8. Why do students need to reflect on their learning?
A. To form a better learning habit.
B. To make boring tasks fun.
C. To slow down and relax for a while.
9. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The meaning of reflect learning.
B. The benefits of reflective learning.
C. The ways to reflect on learning.
10. Which of the following is the best reflective journal according to the passage?
A. Today, I got a low mark on my spelling test. My mom shouted at me angrily. I felt so sad. Next time, I will try harder.
B. Today, I took part in a team meeting for a new program. I shared my ideas and everyone liked them. I felt so confident that I think I can manage everything in the program.
C. I introduced a new product today. But some people didn’t understand it well. I think the pictures in my PPT were not clear enough. Next time, I’ll take clearer pictures.
11. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
D
Plastic is everywhere. According to the United Nations, enough plastic waste to fill 2,000 rubbish trucks is poured into waterways such as oceans, rivers, and lakes each day. There’s plastic litter at the bottom of the ocean and on top of Mount Everest.
Now plastic has been found in another unlikely place: on the backs of hermit crabs (寄居蟹). According to a study published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, hermit crabs are using plastic litter as shells.
Hermit crabs are small, soft-bodied crabs that live near oceans. To protect themselves from killers, the crabs typically wear seashells that have been left behind by dead sea snails (蜗牛).
But according to the study, at least 386 hermit crabs have been documented wearing rubbish. Of the world’s 16 species of hermit crabs that live on land, 10 have been seen wearing litter. Nearly nine out of every 10 of those were wearing plastic waste, such as bottle caps. The others wore glass or metal, such as broken lightbulbs or soda cans.
To study hermit crabs, Jagiello and her team researchers looked at photos of hermit crabs that people had posted online from all over the world. They had been taken by scientists, nature photographers and people who were just curious.
Scientists aren’t sure why hermit crabs are choosing litter instead of snail shells. But they have theories. Some sea snail populations are dropping. Hermit crabs could be turning to litter because they can’t find enough seashells. It’s also possible that crabs prefer plastic because it’s light and easy to carry. Or they’re drawn to its flashy colors.
Scientists agree that plastic pollution harms wildlife in many ways. But it isn’t clear that the crabs are in any danger. “It’s really an amazing example of the beauty of adaptation (适应),” Jagiello says. “What are the long-term results of these adaptations? We don’t know.”
12. What do we know about hermit crabs from the passage?
A. They prefer to live in dirty water.
B. They like to eat dead sea snails.
C. They wear seashells to protect themselves.
13. What does the underlined word “those” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A. 16 species of hermit crabs.
B. 10 species of hermit crabs.
C. All species of hermit crabs.
14. What can we infer from the passage?
A. We should throw plastic litter into oceans to help hermit crabs live.
B. All hermit crabs living on land have been seen wearing plastic litter.
C. Hermit crabs can easily adapt to their surroundings in some ways.
15. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Creative Crabs Using Plastic Litter
B. Plastic Litter in the World’s Oceans
C. Interesting Photos of Hermit Crabs

Yang Changqin turned a childhood dream into a career (事业). The 36-year-old is now a master of Chishui Bamboo weaver (编织者), founder of her brand Jizhu.
Born in Guizhou Province, Yang loved making things by hand as a child. After trying different jobs, she gave up her teaching job in a local school, and started learning traditional bamboo weaving at about 18.
Bamboo weaving turns bamboo strips into useful and pretty things through skilled handwork. For example, it makes everyday objects such as chairs, baskets and other tools in houses.
Yang remembered how hard it was at the beginning. She struggled to control the knife and often cut her hands. But she kept working and improving until the techniques became second nature. Later, Yang began trying new ways of bamboo weaving. She created 3D techniques and studied at art schools to bring modern design ideas into her work.
In 2012, she founded her brand Jizhu. Its bamboo paintings and handbags soon became popular. Today, medals line the walls of her office. But starting a business also meant learning new skills. Besides combining traditional skills with modern design, she also learned to manage production and think about how to reach customers outside her hometown. Her business makes a clear difference in the local community. One shop can make tens of thousands of yuan a month while paying piecework wages (工资) a several thousand yuan to local villagers.
As more young people take an interest in traditional culture and run (经营) brands themselves, Yang welcomes it. She encourages them to use their own power to bring traditional things into modern life. “______,” she said. Her love for bamboo weaving always carried her through each challenge, she added.

An Experience of Overcoming Difficulties
Hello, everyone! Last year, I faced a difficulty in my English learning. I was afraid of speaking in public and always failed my oral tests. I felt upset and wanted to give up.
But later, I decided to change. I kept reading aloud every morning and practiced with my deskmate after class. I also joined the English corner. Gradually, I became confident. Finally, I passed the test and even won a prize in a speech competition.
From this experience, I learned nothing is impossible if we keep trying. When facing difficulties, we should never give up but take action to solve them.
Thank you.
