On a cold night, my family and I were returning home from a relative's house. We were
tired and wanted to reach our warm beds quickly, but we were interrupted (打断) because my
sister wanted to buy some pizza fries. My dad had to give in and stopped at a nearby fast-food
restaurant. While waiting for our order, my sister noticed a family sitting on the roadside, selling
some small toys. The family-a mother, father, and their young daughter-looked cold and
worried, with no warm clothes to protect them from the icy weather.
At first, we hesitated (犹豫). With so many tricks happening these davs, we weren't sure if
they were actually in need or just pretending to be sellers. My sister, however, couldn't shake
off her care. "Dad, are they really needy, or are they cheats?" she asked. After a moment of
thought, my dad replied. "They don't seem like cheats."
As our packed order arrived, we drove past the family, but my sister's voice broke the
silence. "Dad, can't we buy something from them? I feel sorry for them, especially the little
girl." Moved by her compassion, my dad turned the car around and stopped near the family. My
sister smiled as my father bought a few toys from them. The man, in relief, said, "I was praying
for someone to help us. You came like an angel. Now we can buy food and go home. Thank you
so much, sir!"
As we drove away, a sense of happiness and satisfaction filled the car. It was a small act of
kindness, but for that family, it meant a meal and a little hope. Reflecting on the incident, I

realized how a single moment of kindness could make a difference. If my sister hadn't spoken
up or my dad hadn't turned the car, that family might have gone to bed hungry. I'm happy that
we were able to help them, even in a small way

Imagine yourself sitting in a restaurant, laughing with friends, when suddenly they take out
their phones, looking through social media or texting while ignoring(忽 视) you. Or imagine
family dinner, where your father shares important news, only for you and other family members
to enjoy your dinner. This widespread behavior is called."phubbing(低头症)"-first created ir
2012 to describe ignoring others because of a smartphone.
Phubbing is everywhere. We often nod and say "Hmm" while staring at our screens, not
really listening. The problem? It hurts relationships. When we focus on our phones, we miss
real connections, making others feel lonely or upset.
Why do people phub? Mostly, it's because many fear missing out (FOMO 错失恐惧症), so
they check notices, messages continuously. They believe others are experiencing enjoyable and
valuable events without them. But face-to-face talks are special-they show feelings through
smiles, tone, and gestures, which texts can't do. When we phub, we miss these important cues(
线 索), leaving others feeling ignored. People who are phubbed feel unimportant and upset
Even if it's not on purpose, the harm is done
How to Stop Phubbing.

)r

Whales, the largest animals on Earth, have long fascinated scientists with their beautiful
songs. Among them, humpback whales(座 头 鲸) are especially known for their uneasy
melodies (旋律). Recently, researchers uncovered the mystery of how these creatures produce
such sounds
A study published in the journal Nature showed that whales have a special "voice box," or
larynx (喉头), similar to humans, which allows them to sing underwater. Led by Professor Coen
Elemans from the University of Southern Denmark, the team studied the larynxes of stranded(
搁浅 的) whales; including minke, humpback, and sei whales. They discovered that baleen
whales (须鲸) (such as blue, humpback, and gray whales) have a special U-shaped structure in
their voice box that helps them recycle air and sing without breathing in water
Unlike humans, who use vocal cords (声带) in their throat, whales depend on this special
structure to communicate. Sadly, their songs fall in the same frequency(频 率) as noise from
ships, making it harder for them to hear each other. "Sound is important for their life-it's how
they find partners and travel in the ocean," explained Prof. Elemans. "They cannot simply
choose to, for example, sing higher to avoid the noise we make in the ocean,"added Prof
Elemans.
Dr. Kate Stafford, a whale communication expert, praised the study for deepening our
understanding of these huge creatures. The research also helps explain how whales evolved (进
化) from land to sea.
As we learn more about whales' songs, we must also protect their ocean home from
human-made noise, By reducing underwater pollution, we can help ensure these animals
continue to sing for generations to come.
27. What did the study published in Nature mainly find out?
A. How whales live underwater.
B. What allows whales to sing

D. How whales recycle air

C. Whales have got used to man-made noise.
D. Noise may influence whale communication
29. How does Dr. Kate Stafford like the study mentioned in the passage
A. It is of great help
B. It needs improving
C. It causes deep problems
D. It makes no difference
30. What is the main purpose of the passage?

At just 17. Wang Guanxi, a student from the Experimental High School Attached to Beijing
Normal University, created an intelligent climbing-assistance device called "ExoLimb." He won
a national utility model patent (专利) for it. This device helps people with mobility issues (行动
障碍), especially the elderly, to climb stairs and mountains
Wang made the invention because of his grandmother. He used to love playing with her, but
as she got older, her legs became weaker, making it hard for her to climb the stairs to their
sixth-floor home. To help his grandmother and others like her, Wang started studying how
people climb stairs.
"I first thought lifting the thigh (大腿) was the primary challenge," said Wang. He tested
this by asking his parents to help lift his thighs while climbing stairs, but it didn't make
climbing easier.
To understand things better, Wang used slow-motion (慢动作) video recordings, showing
two important parts in each step: lifting the thigh and standing upright. "The key moment came
when I realized that the later part, where the leg on the upper step bears the body's weight
required a lot of support,"noted Wang
Wang changed his focus to a device that supports the person during the key part of standing
upright. With his father's help, Wang built a device using gears (齿轮) and motors
Wang had to solve many problems while making his invention, such as adding a special
switch to stop the device once the leg is fully upright to prevent unnecessary strain (压力).
Looking ahead, Wang plans to make a start-up to sell ExoLimb. "I believe that business is
very important to engineering, and bringing these two fields together is what will drive
innovation," added Wang.
51. What is "ExoLimb" according to the passage?
