Grade 8 Unit 5 Writing Class: Write a story about your day
(New People’s Education Press)
Total class time: 45 mins
Step 1 Greeting & Warm-up & Lead-in (5 mins)
T: Good morning, boys and girls!
Ss: Good morning, teacher!
T: Sit down please. How are you feeling today?
Ss: I’m fine, thank you.
T: Glad to hear that. Before our new class, let’s have a quick review. Last class, we learned past continuous tense, right? Who can tell me its main usage?
S1: We use it to talk about what someone was doing at a certain time in the past.
T: Excellent! You have a good memory. We often use it with when and while to talk about sudden things happening.
Now please look at the pictures on the screen. What can you see in these pictures?
S2: It is raining heavily. People are caught in the rain.
T: Perfect word! Heavy rain, we can also say rainstorm. Have you ever met such sudden bad weather on your way to school or home? How did you feel then?
S3: Yes, I felt wet and worried.
T: That sounds really unlucky. Today we will move on to Section B writing class. Our writing task is to write a short story about your special day, especially a day with unexpected things or bad weather. Now let’s enter our class together.
Step 2 Reading & Text Analysis (12 mins)
T: First of all, let’s learn a sample story together. It is about Mary’s terrible Friday. Please open your books and read the passage silently in two minutes, then try to find out what happened to her.
(Students read silently)
T: Time is up. Now who can tell me the general idea of this passage?
S4: It talks about Mary’s bad experience last Friday morning.
T: Great. Now let’s analyze the story step by step.
First paragraph, who can read it aloud for us?
(Student read)
T: Well done. From this paragraph, we know the time is last Friday. What was the first trouble she met?
Ss: Her alarm didn’t go off, so she got up late.
T: Exactly. This is the beginning of the story, which tells us the time and the start of the trouble.
Then look at the second paragraph. What was she doing when the rainstorm came suddenly?
Ss: She was reviewing lessons while waiting for the bus.
T: Good. Suddenly heavy rain and strong wind made her unable to use the umbrella. This part is the development of the story, things become worse and worse.
Next part, by the time she waited for the bus, she was all wet and cold. And the road was blocked, they would be late for school. This is the most difficult moment, also the climax of the whole story.
Now the last paragraph, what was the surprising ending?
