Kevin was crazy about films and music during his childhood. When he started college,
he dreamed of making films that could combine his love for storytelling and interest in
music.
His biggest challenge came when he planned to make a film about a tennis player.
Since no one would offer him money for a 2 hour film,Kevin and his college friends tried
to make a shorter one. They bought a second-hand camera and used old things instead of
expensive equipment. They even made a shelf on their own to support the camera.
Kevin and his friends worked hard, rain or shine. When filming the tennis player, they
ran after him in the summer sun.If it rained and they couldn't film outside, they hung bed
sheets on the walls in empty room to set up a simple studio.This'12-minute film got much
attention. The teachers and students in their college liked the music they created for it.
After that,Kevin had another idea:to make a musical film.But musicals weren't
popular in college, and many said it wouldn't work.Instead of listening to the doubts,Kevin
and his team spent weeks writing new songs and making a test video. To film the moving
scenes, they fixed a smartphone on a skateboard and pushed it.The actors'hair was blowing
in the wind while they were dancing and singing. The loud voice and laughter of the team
filled the air.
Their musical film was well received and won several awards at a film festival. As
Kevin said,"Making films isn't.about having the best equipment or famous actors. It's
about finding new ways to tell your story. Our team is planning to make a special
documentary about the environment. And I can't wait to write music for it."

An advance in electronic publishing could make the book you are reading seem as
out-of-date as a silent film.Publishers hope to exploit (the growing success of ebooks
by releasing versions with added soundtracks and musical accompaniment.
The noise in the first multimedia books-released in Britain-include rain hitting a
window in a Sherlock Holmes tale.Works by Oscar Wilde and Rudyard Kipling are also
available. When the plot of a book reaches a highlight, background music will create
tension. In America, works by Shakespeare and Jane Austen have already been released
with music and background noise so that, for example, readers can hear tea cups clinking in
Mr Darcy's-garden as they read Pride and Prejudice.
Supporters argue that sound effects are the next logical development for, ebooks and
will add excitement for younger readers.Critics, however, will argue that the noises will
ruin the simple pleasure of having the imagination stimulated by reading.
Caroline Michel, chief executive officer of the literary agency PFD*,said the new
generation of computer-literate readers was used to multiple sensory input. She said:
"Concentration now is such that people have split computer screens where they may be
watching television and replying to an email at the same time.If that's what the market
wants then we should respond to the market."
Booktrack's sound effects work by estimating the user's reading speed. Each time you
"turn"a page, the software reassesses where you have reached in the text and times the
sounds to switch on accordingly. If the soundtrack becomes out of synch ()a click on
any word will re-set it.
Some authors fear a soundtrack could destroy the peace and quiet of libraries and ruin
the pleasure of reading.David Nicholls, author of One Day,the bestseller now released as a
film, said:"This sounds like the opposite of reading. It would be a distraction.I have
enough trouble reading an ebook.Because I'm constantly disturbed by emails and so I've
given up on it for the time being."
Stuart MacBride, the crime writer whose novel Shatter the Bones was an ebook
bestseller,sells 18%of his books as electronic downloads.He said:"If I'm reading,I will
do the noises in my head.Idon't need someone to tell me what crunching gravel(嘎吱响的
石子)sounds like..That would annoy me.”

agencles in London representing writers, broadcasters, speakers and journalists, etc.

A seed cxpert who brought high-quality vegetable seeds to many countries, was
awarded the 2019 World Food Prize.Simon Groot of the Netherlands is credited with
introducing high-quality,disease-resistance vegetable seeds to more than 60 countries
including the Philippines,Thailand and Indonesia.
He began his search to create better vegetable seeds to help farmers in Southeast Asia
in1981.Sixteen years earlier,he had made his first trip to Indonesia. There,Groot learned
that vegetable seeds which were developed for the climate of Europe, did poorly when
planted in the hot tropics. He thought there was a great possibility to introduce hybrid
vegetables to the area. The area lacked vegetable seed developers who were trying to create
hybrids for the local climate."I noticed the seed quality in that part of world was so much
below our standards and below achievable standards.I could not stand that the farmers there
did not have better seeds."Said Groot.
At that time, farmers in Southeast Asia usually saved seeds from season to season.
That was because the seeds available for sale were often old. Those seeds were usually from
Europe or North America and did not grow well in their tropical climate. This meant that

the farmers ended up with smaller crops, and lower quality that changed greatly from
season to season. The plant also could easily become infected with diseases.
Groot partnered with seed trader Benito Domingo of the Philippines. They put
together a team of seed researchers and growers from Wageninge University in the
Netherlands and the University of the Philippines.Within a few years, they developed a
hybrid bitter gourd that sold successfully. Then they modified a tomato plant,
followed by eggplants, pumpkins and leafy vegetables.
The early success led to the start of the East-West Seed Company, which now has
more than 970 improved seeds of 60 vegetable crops.Over the past 40 years, the
discoveries have led to the creation of a tropical vegetable seed industry aimed at small
farmers. The tropical seeds are now spreading into Asia,Africa and Latin America. It is
estimated that the company's seeds are used by 20 million farmers each year in more than
60 countries.
