How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends? What if the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters that took ages to be delivered? This was how things worked not very long ago. Thanks to advances in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has changed significantly.
Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with. Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships. All you need is a Wi-Fi connection.
The digital age also enables us to find people who share our interests, such as collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.
But when you “friend” people online, does this mean that they really are your friends?
It depends.
If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person.
On social media sites, people tend to post only positive updates that make them appear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real problems. Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our Information with criminals.
But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Although technology has changed the way we acquire friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.
4. What is a necessity to contact with friends through social media?
A. A mobile phone. B. A digital camera.
C. A technical instrument. D. A Wi-Fi connection.
5. What can we infer from the saying “on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog”?
A. It’s possible for dogs to make online friends.
B. People online often hide their true identities.
C. It’s forbidden to make friends on the Internet.
D. People online are nicer than those in real life.
6. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. Past→Present→Problem→Advice.
B. Question→Answer→Reason→Result.
C. Problem→Solution→Example→Conclusion.
D. Advantage→Disadvantage→Comparison→Advice.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards online friendship?
A. Supportive. B. Objective.
C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

When Marie Benton first moved to London in 2008, joining a choir helped her settle in. To comfort and build confidence in people in trouble, she hung posters in local hostels (临时收容所) advertising “a choir with no name (yet)”, and it was an immediate success. Thus was officially born The Choir with No Name (TCWNN), which now has seven choirs across different cities to support those affected by homelessness and exclusion (排斥).
Studies have documented the close link between homelessness and mental illness. A 2022 report showed homeless people experience worse physical and mental health than the general population. Fortunately, research published in Psychology of Music found being part of a choir raises positive emotions, with 88% of people seeing mental health improvements and 78% reporting reduced stress and anxiety.
Frequently excluded and often ignored, homeless people are often separated. “Our choirs aim to do the opposite, where everyone is seen and heard,” says TCWNN’s CEO Dr. Kate Wareham.
Unlike other groups, TCWNN is free to join, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds and musical abilities, with no pre-registration, skill test or regular attendance. All rehearsals (彩排) start with a chat, followed by 90 minutes of group singing, and end with a hot meal. The choir directors are teaching group singing in a way that ensures everyone is supported to grow both personally and musically.
Dan, who has been in the choir since 2015, says his life has been changed. Forced to leave his family home and live in a hostel, he completely shut himself off from the world. But weekly rehearsals provided hope during dark times. “When I joined, I was at the bottom of the ladder; choir was the start of climbing up, and, slowly but surely, I got to where I am today — a confident and outgoing person.” he says. Now Dan has his own flat and rebuilds family relationships.
8. Why did Marie Benton start a choir?
A. To uplift people facing hardships.
B. To run more choirs across the UK.
C. To make herself fit in London quickly.
D. To help with the promotion of local hostels.
9. What did the research in Psychology of Music show?
A. The relief of stress through chatting.
B. The poor physical health of homeless people.
C. The beneficial effects of choir on mental health.
D. The link between homelessness and mental health.
10. What makes TCWNN different?
A. Required registration. B. Easy access for everyone.
C. Strict attendance rules. D. High musical ability standards.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Special Choir Bringing Hope and Warmth.
B. Mental Health Studies on Homeless People.
C. Marie Benton: Founder of a Popular Choir.
D. Ways to Become Confident and Outgoing.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. A

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Thus was officially born The Choir with No Name (TCWNN), which now has seven choirs across different cities to support those affected by homelessness and exclusion (排斥). (就这样,‘无名合唱团’正式成立,如今已在不同城市拥有7支合唱团,帮助那些无家可归和被社会排斥的人。)”以及最后一段“But weekly rehearsals provided hope during dark times. (但每周的排练在黑暗时期给了他希望。)”可知,文章讲述这支特殊的合唱团给弱势群体带来希望与温暖,因此最适合的标题是:一支带来希望与温暖的特殊合唱团。

Faced with the growing dangers of climate change, scientists are considering a new plan: moving endangered animals to new habitats far from their old homes. This method, called assisted migration (辅助迁徙), is designed to protect these animals from rising temperatures and habitat loss.
A recent example is the relocation of the Sooty storm-petrel, a seabird that usually lives on low-lying islands in Hawaii and Japan. Its main nesting (筑巢的) area, Tern Island, is only 1.8 meters high and is being worn away by the sea. Therefore, about 40 young birds have been taken 800 kilometers away to Oahu. The biologist Eric Vander Werf notes that climate change is making such actions increasingly necessary. It is hoped that these birds can return to their original living places if the environment improves.
This new way of protecting animals is gaining wider acceptance. There are plans to update the Endangered Species Act, making it easier to move the most threatened species to new places. Because of this, officials and scientists have identified some animals and plants that might be moved, including Florida’s Key deer, Karner blue butterfly, as well as some desert plants and lizards.
However, not everyone supports this approach. Some lawmakers argue that introducing new species into different ecosystems (生态系统) can create new risks, such as threatening native species or damaging the local environment.
The biologist Jason McLachlan points out that this is a major change in our means of saving species. He also believes that as global warming forces animals to move at an alarming rate, the traditional idea of what is regarded as a native species is not as clear as it once was. In the past, climate changes happened so slowly over thousands of years that plants and animals could fully adapt to the new environment, but today such changes are happening much too quickly for most ecosystems.
12. Why were the Sooty storm-petrels moved to Oahu?
A. To protect native species. B. To follow wildlife laws.
C. To escape rising sea levels. D. To return to original habitat.
13. What can we know about Florida’s Key deer?
A. They are at great risk.
B. They are under good protection.
C. They have been officially moved.
D. They have been settled in new places.
14. What can we infer from Jason McLachlan’s words?
A. Animals fail to move fast enough.
B. People value native species highly.
C. Assisted migration will be well accepted.
D. The definition of native species needs reconsidering.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To discuss the risks of relocation. B. To describe dangers to wild animals.
C. To call for immediate climate action. D. To introduce a new protection method.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. D
【解析】
【导语】主要介绍辅助迁徙这一新型动物保护方式,结合实例说明应用现状,同时介绍其存在的争议与现实背景。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Its main nesting (筑巢的) area, Tern Island, is only 1.8 meters high and is being worn away by the sea. Therefore, about 40 young birds have been taken 800 kilometers away to Oahu.(它的主要筑巢地特恩岛海拔仅有1.8米,并且正在被海水侵蚀。因此,大约40只幼鸟被转移到800公里外的瓦胡岛。)”可知,海燕迁移是为躲避海平面上升、海水侵蚀带来的生存危机。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Because of this, officials and scientists have identified some animals and plants that might be moved, including Florida’s Key deer, Karner blue butterfly, as well as some desert plants and lizards.(正因如此,官员和科学家已经确定了一些可能需要迁移的动植物,包括佛罗里达礁鹿、卡纳蓝蝴蝶以及部分沙漠植物和蜥蜴。)”可知,佛罗里达礁鹿属于受威胁严重、有待迁移的高危物种,处境十分危险。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“He also believes that as global warming forces animals to move at an alarming rate, the traditional idea of what is regarded as a native species is not as clear as it once was.(他还认为,随着全球变暖迫使动物以惊人的速度迁徙,本土物种的传统界定概念已不像过去那样清晰。)”可知,气候快速变化打破固有生态模式,本土物种的定义需要重新思考与界定。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Faced with the growing dangers of climate change, scientists are considering a new plan: moving endangered animals to new habitats far from their old homes. This method, called assisted migration (辅助迁徙), is designed to protect these animals from rising temperatures and habitat loss.(面对日益严重的气候变化危机,科学家正考虑一项新方案:将濒危动物迁往远离原有家园的新栖息地。这种被称作辅助迁徙的方式,旨在保护动物免受气温升高与栖息地丧失的危害。)”可知,文章客观介绍辅助迁徙的定义、实际案例、推行规划、各方争议以及时代背景,不偏向批判或呼吁,由此可推断,作者写作此文意在介绍一项全新的野生动物保护手段。

The farm was a peaceful place with rolling green fields, wooden huts, and friendly animals like goats and sheep. The quiet life there was a refreshing break from busy school days. We fed rabbits with carrots, picked fresh strawberries, and even learned to milk a cow under the farmer’s guidance.
